  • (2003) Kobe scored 40pts vs the Jazz - his 7th straight game with at least 40pts and 11th straight with 35pts (breaking Michael Jordan's record). MVP chants!!
    Date: February 19th, 2003
    Results: L.A won 93 - 87
    Stats: 40pts on 15/29 shooting incl 4/6 from 3pt range, 6rbds
Peach: Despite a double overtime game the night before and some knee problems, Kobe was hot early, hitting his first 6 shots. Even though he's been limited in the 2nd half like the entire Lakers team, he managed to hit 3 big shots in the final finutes to give L.A a precious road victory. Kobe became the only player with Chamberlain to record at least 11th straight games with 35pts.
Quote: "When you get in tough situations, he knows how to make tough shots. He's a terrific shooter. This guy is as good as there is in the game right know on the short clock."
Jerry Sloan, coach of the Jazz
Anecdote: On the free thrown line with 8 seconds to go, Kobe scored point n°40 while Salt Lake City fans cheering him, chanting "Kobe" & "MVP"!

@movalcadillac Please feel free to message me with questions or w/e else - it doesnt matter the years, the "athleticism" and skills of the league didn't "get better" like people think, only the style shifted. Watch the quality of Wilt in the NCAA final four, there aren't centers like this today. And his opponents front court was a defensive specialist Stoudemire sized PF and Dwight sized center! /watch?v=kB43A-ODuLc How could anyone not be in awe of the skill/agility/size/creativity of that guy?

@movalcadillac I appreciate that you actually took the time to read my comments, from where you started I didn't think you'd be receptive. But I must shed a little more light on these vintage centers before you fall into another false preconcieved notion. Bill Russell, and Wilt Chamberlain both ran the 1/4 mile in 49.0 flat. That is no less incredible today as it was back then. Bill Russell was ranked #7 in the WORLD for High Jump in 1954, and Wilt won the Big 8 NCAA high-jump 3 years in a row.

@iishyxvietxboyii You could not be more wrong. Bryant has become more of a jump shooter later in his career much the way Jordan began to rely on the turnaround. But, when he was younger Bryant was one of the best slashers in NBA history. Bryant is HANDS DOWN the most advanced offensive player of all time. There is literally nothing he can't do, and even at 32 with all kinds of injuries he's still dunking on people.

@movalcadillac I could go on and on about the collective differences in play trends and styles that contribute to differences in Wilts 60s-70s vs the Jordanesq 90s00s. It can best be summarized by Wilts era = big man era. Athleticism, size, speed, talent, density of talent, and I mean everything u can think of about centers back then was better than what you'll see now. The reverse is true for guards today, by virtue of the shift in dozens of subtle trends and rule changes. Make sense?

I didn't say he was better than Jordan, I didn't even come close to even trying to say that. Kobe isn't better. But when Kobe retires, it'll be a good discussion...there's no denying that. Remember, mj started cementing his legacy at 30. All of his rings were after the age of of 30. Kobe turns 31 this august, he's got plenty of time to win more rings and possibly become greater than mj. But right now, mj is on top. That dude was a beast...

  • @WiltChamberlainArchive

@movalcadillac Oh, the guard thing - that applies to todays forwards too. Basicaly the modern game is all about smaller, more explosive 6'3-6'8 guys facing the basket, driving or shooting. Back-to-the-basket bigman skills rapidly became a lost art basicaly bc Jordans and Iversons fancier moves made it unanimously unpopular. ("Duncan is boring" - sound familiar?) The league has expanded/diluted and bc Jordan popularized it, the "I'm gonna carry my team" effect is today, synonymous with greatness.
