I do love that instead of being scared by the final twist, you have an expression of pure perplexity. Which feels apt, since it was a hastily rewritten ending so they could justify making sequels.

The only reason Tina was running like that at the very beginning of the movie is because that happens in nightmares. At least in nightmares that I’ve had. You feel like you’re running as hard as you can, but you’re barely moving anywhere. That’s what they were trying to portray.

There is a lot of that, and I've noticed it with a lot of reactors to this movie. A lot can't understand that things are different in dreams. "Why is she dressed like that? Where are her shoes? Why would she walk towards that voice?" We don't always act logically in dreams. 🤷

Yep, havent have nightmares really for 20 years, but i remember as kid / teen i had those slow running themes for sure. I made a seperate comment yesterday to this video, about this point as you did. Funny thing actually now when i'm thinking about it...that i havent have any nightmares in decades or so. Maybe i have mastered that, like in 3rd part of the movie, aka dream master, i can wake me up if i ever sense i'm going there LOL. I studied some lucid dreaming many years ago too. 🤔

Very fair point! I was roasting her but that’s definitely an accurate representation of how it feels to “run” in your dreams, AKA doing anything but actually running cuz your legs feel like bricks 😂

I think it ends this way because the film wants to send a message about the reality of fear and trauma. They go to some lengths to show that the parents not being open and dealing with the reality of Krueger is what sets up his power and ability to take their kids now. Sure, Nancy is ‘winning’ by rejecting Krueger’s reality and power, but allowing that to be it might have felt too simple and sort of falls into the same trap the parents did in the first place.
The parents took back control and power by ganging up on Krueger and murdering him, but never being open and responsible about their actions seems to have had a part to play in Krueger becoming a supernatural force.
If you read the whole film as an allegory about trying to shield kids from the world while ignoring your past, the ending starts to make good sense. You can’t go back. You have to work again and again to overcome the traumas of your past.
I’m sure it’s the film reminding us that making your fears powerless isn’t the same as pretending they didn’t happen or aren’t real.

    • @weezerfan084
      @weezerfan084 3 місяці тому +7

If I'm remembering correctly, the reason the movie ended like that was because they wanted the ability for there to be a sequel. Wes Craven did not write that ending it, he ended the story w/ Nancy actually defeating Freddy, the studio didn't want Nancy defeating Freddy to be real, so the ending that we see is the compromise where it is left open for Freddy to be able to return if the film did well. That was stated by Wes himself, so while your interpretation is one of the best I've heard to make sense of it, it wasn't intended to give that message.

What's scary about some of my dreams is that sometimes even when I'm aware that I'm dreaming, I can't wake myself up lol. Usually when I'm lucid, the dreams are at the most vivid too, so scary shit tends to happen, and knowing it's nit real doesn't make it less freaky.

Weirdly, out of pure cynical greed. It was going to have a happy ending, but the producer wanted to leave it open to a sequel, so had them remake the ending (hence, the kind of break in the film's rules and poorer special effects in the final scene).

The Heather Langenkamp/Wes Craven trilogy of Nightmare on Elm St. movies are the only ones that I would consider essential. Those 3 are:
This one you watched right here.
Nightmare on Elm St. 3: Dream Warriors
    Wes Craven's New Nightmare
If you watch another Nightmare movie, you REALLY do not need to watch them in order 1 after another.
But watch those 3 in order, and you'll be fine.

A Nightmare on Elm Street is based on several true stories, including the experiences of Hmong refugees and a Cambodian immigrant family. This was not the only bad experience Johnny Depp has had in bed. Always seems to end up in his bed. A Nightmare on Elm Street is an American supernatural slasher media franchise comprising nine films, a television series, novels, comic books, and other media. They could have done a better job with the ending, but I like the movie for what it is. I have had dreams where I knew I was in a dream and couldn't wake myself up, and I have been stabbed in my dream, and it hurts like hell. Dreams have always fascinated me. And by the way, you can't technically "dream." At the same time that you are fully awake, there are states of consciousness close to waking where you can experience dream-like imagery or sensations, often called "hypnagogic" hallucinations when transitioning to sleep or "hypnopompic" when waking up; these can sometimes feel like you're dreaming while awake, especially if you're very tired or stressed.

My own theory, if this is treated as a standalone movie, is that she heard about Freddy Krueger and had a dream about him. Maybe her mother confessed that the she and the town murdered Freddy in revenge, and this was Nancy's nightmare about it. For me, that is one of the better theories. Oddly enough, I have never seen someone else say that same premise.

  • @TWINAM

One of your reason's for being confused at the end of this movie is that the movie didn't go in depth on the Backstory of how Freddy came to be or what happened before Nightmare on Elm Street came to be as the movie stated it wasn't the warrant that was done wrong when they did have the trial for Freddy the arresting Officer didn't read Freddy his Miranda Right's and that is how the defense Attorney was awarded a miss trial which led Freddy being set free which in turn the Parent's of the Elm Street went to burn Freddy ALIVE in his boiler room / slash hiding spot. If you want to see this for yourself Please watch the 1ST 2 episodes of Nightmare on Elm Street Freddy's Nightmares the T.V. series called No More MR. Nice guy from 1988 which you can get on E-Bay if you want to see it for yourself. This movie was directed by Wes Craven which came up with the concept of this movie from Newspaper clippings that people were keeping themselves from falling asleep for many days and soon after they did go to sleep would die in there sleep.

FYI: This was before home alone. So home alone was the comedy / family version of this.
Johnny Depp's character said the answer to this. He only has power if you believe in him. He didn't have nightmares because he didn't believe in him. Only when Nancy kept pressing this idea to him did he start to believe and he died.
Her parents didn't believe in him so he had no power over them. As the movies go on, the more people who believe in him the strong he becomes.
The end was a dream. Everyone is already dead but Nancy in the final Dream.

Home Alone came out 6 years after this. This was based on a true story. Wes Craven found a story about a young man who told his parents he knew if he slept again he would die. They found him the next morning. He had a coffee machine in his closet for trying to stay awake. The ending in this one is confusing because they couldn't decide on an ending so they did both. You should watch more they have a clear path after the next one.

The whole end of this film is one huge nightmare, she was already asleep when her phone rang and she heard Freddy's claws scraping, she never woke up from her dream.. A nightmare within a nightmare.. hence why the cop outside took his time and her dad was blase over seeing his wife as a skeleton being sucked into the bed....

Great reaction to this classic masterpiece. As far as the sequels go Nighmare on Elm Street III: Dream Warriors and Wes Craven's New Nightmare are the only ones worth watching.
Freddy targeted the teens because he was a child murderer in the first place and to be blunt having a bunch of attractive young people in danger sold more tickets.

If you're going to watch more Nightmare On Elm Street, it's probably worth skipping part 2. Other than having Freddy in it, it's completely unrelated. Going straight to the third movie, which is the best of them all, is probably the best plan and saves you having to sit through part 2 😊

I don't think it is as deep as most people try to make it be. It's sort of based on a true story. This is what I found in an article, that Wes Craven said.
I’d read an article in the L.A. Times about a family who had escaped the Killing Fields in Cambodia and managed to get to the U.S," Craven told Vulture in 2014. "Things were fine, and then suddenly the young son was having very disturbing nightmares. He told his parents he was afraid that if he slept, the thing chasing him would get him, so he tried to stay awake for days at a time. When he finally fell asleep, his parents thought this crisis was over. Then they heard screams in the middle of the night. By the time they got to him, he was dead. He died in the middle of a nightmare. Here was a youngster having a vision of a horror that everyone older was denying. That became the central line of Nightmare on Elm Street."

  • @Dreamfox-df6bg
    @Dreamfox-df6bg 3 місяці тому +1

While I don't have an answer, I have a theory.
Do we have any proof that it's not the entire movie that is a dream? That no one in the movie was ever awake?
Because it's 'A' Nightmare on Elm Street, not 'Nightmares on Elm Street'. Singular as in one dream.
And if the entire movie is a dream, they will never wake up. The nightmare will never end. We don't even know who is dreaming the nightmare and who is just an extra provided by Freddy.

    "How is [Freddy] doing this?"
Well, it's not that complicated. His mother was a nun who was trapped in a room with a hundred violent lunatics in the insane asylum, and then raped by them all over weeks; one of them was Freddy's father. The nun was eventually rescued, and gave birth to Freddy, though died in the process. Due to the violent nature of his conception and being a psychopath's son, he was born evil. Freddy would become a serial killer targeting only children; although, he'd also have a normal life at the same time, as he'd get married and have a daughter. Freddy was arrested, but due to a mistake, he was released on a technicality. The parents of the town tracked him down and burned him alive; as he was dying, three magic flying snake things appeared and said he was the most evil person, so gave him dream powers, which he would use to kill teenagers, and also feed on their souls to remain in existence.
