Old Fashioned English Treacle Tart

  • Treacle Tart is a traditional English dessert that dates from the early 19th century. Because of it's rich, sweet filling it's not usually made with a very deep fill, although, modern Chefs tend to make it with a very deep gooey filling, which I feel is a bit too much. I'm one of the old school bakers who believes old traditional recipes are best left as they have been for all those years.
    INGREDIENTS
    For the pastry: (Use about half of the pastry and freeze the rest)
    200g Self-raising lour
    50g Butter/Margarine
    50g Lard
    Pinch of Salt
    About Two Tablespoons Cold Water
    For the filling:
    100g Golden Syrup
    25g Fresh Soft Breadcrumbs
    Grated zest and Juice of 1/2 Large Lemon
    You will need an 18cm flan tin.

    You are the first person I’ve seen keep flour in a shaker. I have done that for over 60 years and have found it very handy. Another lovely recipe.

    Treacle tart......a lovely dessert, that I want, but makes my teeth become sensitive. Thank you for the fond memories.

      If it's made correctly with a nice shallow filling like I do, it's not over sweet and has a good balance between the crust and the filling. Hope this helps.

    I live in the canaries and have to buy golden syrup at the local brit store very expensive, usually have a shipping order for any friends or family visiting lol but will definitely have a go at your homemade syrup, many thanks for your wonderful no hassle recipes

    Oh thank you, Mr Paul! I grew up on this, usually with custard, always such a treat. Mum didn’t write down a lot of her recipes and they passed with her. Now I can make my own. Missed seeing your face and kitchen today☺️

    Like many others have said, I to believe in the integrity of old recipes. They should not be changed, I also believe, if you’re going to take the trouble to make the recipe, you should take the time to source ingredients. I went out of my way, and ordered golden syrup and, black treacle. It’s worth it.😊

      Caroline, I'm sure you ARE the bees knees even without my recipes. When you make this, don't be tempted to put extra filling in if it looks too shallow, this is the traditional method and it makes sure the tart is not too sweet and sickly, your should be able to really taste the lemon too.     Thanks for mentioning the baking powder for plain flour. Self raising flour isn't easy to find in some locations so I sadly have to ignore recipes that call for it without giving the alternative. I've seen online cooks suggest alternatives for different ingredients but not many think to offer baking powder amounts for plain flour. My bugbear? Dumplings. I'd love a plain flour plus baking powder version for them. 😊

    Hello Mr Paul! I just discovered your channel a few days ago and I'm loving it! Definitely going to try my hand at some of your recipes - they all look fantastic! This one included! Love a good Treacle Tart!
    Would you be able to do an episode where you cover some things you can do with Suet (just the Atora stuff you can buy) because it's something I've always wanted to work with and I've never been quite sure where to start with it?

      I'm afraid lard in much more than just rendering down pork fat. The fat has to come from certain areas of the pig, such as the leaf, that's the fat round the kidney area.Where do you live?

    Amazon carries golden syrup, so if you're saying you can't buy it, you're also saying you don't have access to Amazon.

    I haven't had treacle tart in forever xx Mr. Paul I looked up the Russian slice cake you mentioned when i asked about Chester slices and there is no recipe on you tube how to make it so can you help me out or demo it thank you.

      It's flour with the baking powder already incorporated. If you don't have it you will need to add 1/2 teaspoon baking powder to the recipe.
