Best VA in the whole series, honestly. The rest of the performances in SH2 work well purely as some bizarre, Lynchian rendering of broken weirdos, but Mary/Maria is just legitimately excellent. She can be so subtly threatening and unpredictable as Maria, and then so completely human and heartbreaking as Mary. Some games can scare the player, very few can disturb the player. This game will stick with you in the dark recesses of your mind and eventually creep out once more, just like Silent Hill.
I've watched Vinny for about a decade now. I don't know if he's ever brought it up, but I'm almost certain his mother died of cancer. He mentions a lot of his family, but never her, and he gets a bit personally enraged when talking about how fucked up cancer is during charity events - events raising money for cancer research. As well, he mentions while playing this game how there's a lot of conflicting, intense emotions when a close family member is dying. While Mary didn't exactly have cancer - something more like a plague or pox - the ending areas of this game nail that conflict of emotions as you're helplessly losing someone close. How you can love someone so much you want them to die faster, just to be out of pain; or how you can find yourself resenting how much of your life begins to revolve around someone that is likely growing increasingly bitter about the hand they've been dealt. Of course, you want them to get better, but, there's a point where holding out that hope only hurts everyone involved. This game does a hell of a job of giving even those that haven't experienced such an event an idea of the confusion and guilt and remorse. When you know this experience personally - which, I do - it hits in a way no other media has ever done for me. If Vinny has been through such, I figure the ending quickly went from "video games" to uncomfortable reflection.

@@maximvazhov6904 Nah, fair question. So, the way my sister died was suicide, she shot herself. In the aftermath I experienced everything from anger, sadness, betrayal, and the feelings between. Everyone told me when I even came close to entertaining the idea that I was partly to blame they would always tell me to not think of it or there was nothing I could do. The truth of the matter is I could've. This game and the ending I got, I came to the conclusion was that you could do something regrettable or even terrible, but this has happened and now it is a part of you, and that's okay. Don't let it consume you, you can move on and just take that guilt with as it will forever be with you and allow it to inform your decisions, learn from it, and move on. When I played this game I was still in a years long funk, and this brought me out of it. If I got the "In Water" ending, maybe that would've been bad. It's all a matter of perspective and I'm a little obsessed with people holding themselves accountable and not lying to themselves, hence my struggle with the guilt. Hope this helped.
@@Serpens6 I see now, sounds very comforting. You're, right, what doesn't kill us - makes us stronger. When playing this game, I've been thinking constantly about how lucky I am not to be sick with an incurable disease or not to have to deal with a relative or a friend who is about to die. This weight does require a man to have wide shoulders. Good to know you were able to overcome it and, most importantly, didn't get the water ending.
I once played a pirated copy of Silent Hill 2. For some reason whenever James would finish talking it would repeat the last syllable until he spoke again. It never stopped.
20:52 This could've been a masterclass in separating fact from fiction. I didn't realize it until later, but on Vin's stream when Maria asks "Don't you wanna touch me?", her voice comes on during the cutscene, with her lips not moving. I thought this was intentional at first. The cutscene plays so well with James' and the player's confusion about her getting stabbed (or even who she actually is), and then she lulls them in by putting her hand on James' face as proof that she's real, only to fuck with them again by saying something without moving her mouth.
I've been interested in watching Vinny play this actually! I heard that this was his first Silent Hill game, so I'm definitely heading to the full stream playlist when I get the chance. Thanks for the reminder though!
I really REALLY wanna see him tackle 1 and then 3, but that's highly unlikely. Alternatively, 4 is pretty good, though I would prefer to see him get the OG Silent Hill feeling before they started tinkering with the formula.
Dunno why you edited out the punch in the gut at 38:25 , the rest of that monologue probably has the biggest emotional impact in the game besides the ending credits. Besides that great work! Nice summary of the playthrough.
"This town is full of Monsters, How can you sit there and eat pizza!?" Probably one of the best quotes in the game. I really liked this game since i finished it, like a year ago or two. Had to get rid of all the dust in my ps2 and try sh2 for the first time, i gotta thank my uncle for taking good care of his ps2 games.
I have to hand it to the Silent Hill 2 team, they made a Dog ending and it's still really fucked up. Imagine James going through this hell, being put through the worst experience imaginable, and then finding out that it was all fake and masterminded by a Shiba Inu. There's no getting over that, you're traumatized forever.
it really means a lot to me that out of all the horror games vinny has played, the ones he found scariest were this game and SOMA, two games that i hold really dear to my heart and are my all time favorites
I used to live with my aunt who had two best friends named Mary and Maria lol. I also grew up in a small resort town with a lake, but it used to be a resort town. Now it just exists. It's known for being one of the hideouts for Al Capone, but the hotel he stayed at recently shut down. It was a historic building.
A quote from Takayoshi Sato, character designer and CGI director of this game, on the sexual elements that are so prevalent: "Psychological horror has to shake human's heart deeply. Shaking people's heart deeply means uncover people's core emotion and their core motivation for life. Everybody is thinking and concerning about sex and death. Everybody. If we want to scare, shake, or touch the users or spectators, then we have to think about sex and death deeply. To make like a death scene, somebody died or monsters died, we tried to mix erotic essence. This is kind of a visual and a core concept."
Funny enough, if I remember correctly Silent Hill 2 wasn’t originally well-liked, because of its diversions from the first game. Now it’s the most iconic entry in the series. Some things just get even BETTER with age. It’s surreal.

I love how for the most of the game the VAs sound just bad but when you're towards the end, everything starts to make sense and you realize most of the voice are actually very good and emotional. Especially Angela's. It makes you even think over the pre definitions we have of normal and good lol

9:45 What is she doing all alone out here on this boardwalk...
without any polish water ice? We've got mango, cherry, blue raspberry...
Holy shit that made me tear up, especially the ending.
Played this after my sister passed, really helped me.
Ouch, I’m sorry to hear of her passing. Rest In Peace.
Sorry if this comes off mean, but in what way did this help you? I feel like this game could make it only worse for you.
Tourettes Hill 2
James if he were acoustic.
My god Vinny's stream of this game was so good, one of my all-time favorite vinesauce playthroughs ever
This game is kinda fundamental to me as a human being, so it was a pleasure to see Vinny experience it
20:52 This could've been a masterclass in separating fact from fiction.
You were always such a kidder, James.
Strangely enough, there's not a wasp woman in this game.
I left my legs back in Dusseldorf...Now I'm looking for my lost lover...the nuclear silo beneath Silent Hill.
Whenever I hear the name Maria I can only think of Shadow the Hedgehog.
Legit same here!! lmao
You're fucked then cause Maria is a pretty common name
I've been interested in watching Vinny play this actually!
I heard that this was his first Silent Hill game, so I'm definitely heading to the full stream playlist when I get the chance.
Thanks for the reminder though!
I really REALLY wanna see him tackle 1 and then 3, but that's highly unlikely. Alternatively, 4 is pretty good, though I would prefer to see him get the OG Silent Hill feeling before they started tinkering with the formula.
@@ChargeQM tfw this year i saw "Silent hill" and "vinesauce" on Fullsauce and its a FUCKING HALF LIFE MOD, FUCK
@@KOTEBANAROT womp womp
Dunno why you edited out the punch in the gut at 38:25 , the rest of that monologue probably has the biggest emotional impact in the game besides the ending credits. Besides that great work! Nice summary of the playthrough.
Yeah the video's already 40 something minutes, why cut down the big feel moments?
They cut out a lotta the best parts...
26:10 One of the most prophetic and foreboding thing Vinny has ever said.
God I love this game despite never playing it, and I'm super glad that Vinny got around to try it out. Such a good game.
Silent Hill 2 will forever be my favorite Silent Hill.
Spoiler Alert: Vinny did not enjoy "Silent Hill 4: The Room"
Surprise surprise
"This town is full of Monsters, How can you sit there and eat pizza!?"
Probably one of the best quotes in the game.
I really liked this game since i finished it, like a year ago or two.
Had to get rid of all the dust in my ps2 and try sh2 for the first time, i gotta thank my uncle for taking good care of his ps2 games.
Vinny... You made me happy.
I read the warning as "there might be disturbing memes ahead", which also isn't totally wrong.
"Lusty for that Crusty" sounds like the name of one of those really, REALLY weird pornos.
Its a simpsons porn parody
it really means a lot to me that out of all the horror games vinny has played, the ones he found scariest were this game and SOMA, two games that i hold really dear to my heart and are my all time favorites
Did not expect my favorite channel for vinesauce edits to show up on the actual vinesauce channel.
Amazing work you guys!
Thank you for streaming this. It unclogged some emotional blockages I was having.
A quote from Takayoshi Sato, character designer and CGI director of this game, on the sexual elements that are so prevalent:
"Psychological horror has to shake human's heart deeply. This is kind of a visual and a core concept."
holy fuck that hurt me in ways i didnt know a game from literally 2001 could
as opposed to a game figuratively from 2001?
exactly ralphie exactly
don't believe the lie that old games aren't legit. that's marketing right there
Funny enough, if I remember correctly Silent Hill 2 wasn’t originally well-liked, because of its diversions from the first game.
Now it’s the most iconic entry in the series. Some things just get even BETTER with age. It’s surreal.
@@Glory2Snowstar
Same thing happened with Mario sunshine and wind waker
Vinny: Cha can I show you something truly horrib...
Silent Hill 2: Hold that thought Vinny
The game actually looks nice! and the theme.. Didn't expect that tbh
I understand now how this game is "sacred"
I love how Vinny calls James “Jamie” it’s endearing and wondeeful
I loved this rollercoaster of emotions of watching you play SH2.. Starting out by shitting on it, then being on the verge of tears and an existential crisis, then just laughing at the dog ending. Truly an experience lol
this game is great but damn that ending is so painful
Which one? This game has a fuck ton of endings
@@Ashurman666 The dog ending, obviously
@Adam Rhodes 536 Nah that ending's great. Out of all the SH joke endings, that one might just be the best one. The Suicide ending on the other hand...now that one is painful
@@Ashurman666 the note ending lol
"i killed a human being..." No, James. you lose human being status when you kill a dog.
This is actually completely perfect, I just finished watching all the Silent Hill 2 streams!
42:57 Vinny puts out his feelings of the game, then makes a hilarious shift in gears
you know when it gets real when vinny puts a disclaimer
adam’s the editor for this stream? this is a glow up! no wonder he’s been compiling the silent hill 2 streams on his personal channel.. THE ABSOLUTE MADMAN YOU ARE!
“This MY psychological hell! I love it here!”
I remember watching a playthrough of this game around 10 years ago, back when I was in high school. I was too naive and innocent to understand what the characters were going through back then, but now as an adult I do and it hits a bit harder.
You must have had an easy life...
Secular Ascetic Compared to other people I did.
THE BEST BIRTHDAY PRESENT I EVER COULD HAVE ASKED FOR! Thank you so much to Vinny and Adam Rhodes 536 for this spooktacular compilation! :D
I’ve seen the “There was a hole here, it’s gone now” in Minecraft horror maps and I will always remember it for that unless I am reminded that it came from silent hill 2
I love how for the most of the game the VAs sound just bad but when you're towards the end, everything starts to make sense and you realize most of the voice are actually very good and emotional. Especially Angela's. It makes you even think over the pre definitions we have of normal and good lol
It’s a shame he never got to play the prologue where you get to play as Maria
Watching Vinny play this, truly shows the unique power of this game. The way it sneaks up on you
Very good to see this video pop up. Hope Silent Hill 1 is in his sights. Even if its not played during October. You can play scary games outside of October.
Well he got a lot on his plate right now so obviously I'm not expecting it to be soon, just sayin' is all.

I remember this... My gosh, what an emotional rollercoaster it was.
Yess Great job Adam love your highlights
classic for the ages
Fuck man, I keep crying every single time.
Man I could listen to you theorizing forever. This game is great and I've never played anything that comes close to how uneasy it makes me feel.
I recommend watching RagnarRox's analysis videos! They're really in-depth and interesting
@@cai_in_the_sky2222 Oooh! I will check out for sure.
I definitely needed this today. Thank you
The fact he got "leave" in his first, blind playthrough is badass
This gonna be real spooky.
