Recycled Reviews #5

  • A sample or dram of a whisky is a little like a first date to the full bottle's relationship. When the bottle finally gives up it's last, we can then decide if it's a something we'd like to continue. Will these relationships endure? Or is it goodbye and good riddance? Another 15 bottles are given a summary and decision before being shipped off to recycling.
    Please remember the scoring, as always, is notional and I ask you apply your own rational intelligence, as I reserve the right to change my mind fully, by tomorrow. If you know whisky, you'll understand what I mean. But don't take my word for it - check out these other reviews and appraisals below.
    This upload is dedicated to my patron Phillip Lloyd. Thank you for the continued and evangelical support - I'm very grateful.

    Roy, anyone that tells you Bulliet Rye is not good stuff is not being honest with themselves. I have done blind tastings of a flight of rye's that included several highly regarded rye whiskeys. The bulliet is in there as an honesty check. Low and behold, the Bulliet always ends up in the top 3 for every taster. Keep enjoying Bulliet rye, you are on the right track!

    Coming back to this review and it's interesting. 5 years ago, me and a friend sat in a bar with some Auchentoshan American Oak and loving it. Last year I finally tossed my bottle of American Oak that I bought in 2020 on nostalgia alone. It was barely good enough to cook or bake with. The Auchentoshan 12 I had bought with the AO is better, but still average at best. 6/10 and 7/10 respectively from me.

    Thanks for the great review! Amazingly accurate analogy relating samples/first tastes to first dates😏. You are so lucky to be living in the land of the source. I’m on Vancouver Island in BC, Canada. Next to no samples sizes of scotch here. Sure, a few cheap blends, but that’s it. Worse yet, there are no smaller sizes (we call them “mickeys” here) of anything here except the cheap blends. It can be quite brutal to shell out $80-100 and end up not wanting to commit or wanting an annulment! Unlike our neighbours to the south, we are not permitted to import alcohol of any kind, even from other Canadian Provinces! On the positive side of the coin, I’ve become quite the whiskey researcher. Thanks for the help with all of your reviews! Slainte!

    It's funny watching this now and hearing your comments about Japanese whisky prices, in 2022 it's so excessive the price of virtually any Japanese whisky that even if I wanted to try I can't justify the costs at all.

    I've been watching your reviews for sometime and although I haven't commented previously, I just thought I'd take the opportunity to say how much I love these reviews; it's a great format and I think the way that you wait until you've finished the whole bottle allows for a much more honest and fair appraisal. In regards to Ledaig, I've never actually had a distillery bottling, but I have purchased a number of the signatory vintage bottlings that they keep putting out. They're young - the last one I had was six years old - but they can be fantastic, in an in your face youthful sort of way. As for Bowmore, I haven't had one in a few years but I always found I got this slightly artificial, perfume taste that I didn't like. Like lavender-scented room spray or something.
    Anyway, sorry for the long comment. I've purchased a couple of bottles based on your reviews though so figured I'd chime in. The Ledaig 10 is on the list!

    • @Aqvavitae

      I picked up a couple of the Deanstons - the 18 and the 12 - after hearing you waxing lyrical about them. They were very good, especially at the price point! Looking forward to more videos! Cheers.

    • @joshjosh320
      @joshjosh320 6 років тому +1

      Absolutely agree on how amazing Signatory bottlings of Ledaig are. A while ago I picked up a Signatory 7yo Ledaig hogshead Cask-Strength, and was so blown away after tasting it that I went back 2 days later to pick up a second bottle for fear they'd disappear quickly. (A baseless worry, it turns out, as they're still on the shelf months later.) The official 10yo is a fantastic whisky too, well worth picking up, but honestly, at a mere $5 or $10 more I'll probably look for another independent bottling when the time comes.
      Just generally, with peated whiskies I'm not only comfortable with young age statements or NAS, I find I actually prefer them. They're usually bottled at higher strength, naturally presented, and allow one to experiment with water and find that sweet spot. I tried a sample of a 25yo Laphroaig once, and while it was quite lovely and special on that occasion...frankly, I think it gets blown away by a Lagavulin 8, Benromach Peat Smoke, Ardbeg Uigeadail, a G&M bottling of 8 or 9yo Caol Ila, a Laphroaig 10 CS, or this Signatory Ledaig. All of which are a fraction of the cost. Not everything gets better with age, especially for those of us who love that massive peaty slap to the senses.

    • @RobinSidwellKoaDobro
      @RobinSidwellKoaDobro 6 років тому +1

      Hey Josh, we're on the same wavelength when it comes to peat then! I have a Ledaig 7 year old on the go at the moment. Awesome whisky, every bit as good as any comparable Islay whiskies at the same price point. Like you, I've also tried some great young Caol Ila expressions as well. Cheers!

    Such an enjoyable series and you never fail to entertain and inform. Thank you. I was a bit surprised to hear how you enjoyed the Bulleit Rye. I enjoy that one too, but many I've shared it with find it rough or alcohol forward. I have thought of it as a bit of a guilty pleasure, but if you enjoyed it too, I can be a bit more bold in sharing my taste! Also, thanks for trying a wide variety of expressions, not just bottles that start over 100 pounds. Slainte!

      Thanks for the nice words and great to have you watching! Yes, the Bulleit Rye has had people surprised I enjoyed it - there's apparently loads out there "better" but it did the job of making me curious to try others, I still like it. Occasionally, there will be more expensive bottles that pop up in these, but it's representative of what I'm drinking and sharing rather than a strategy of budget. As you say, variety is the key I hope. Slàinte my friend!

    Another great throw away, Roy - many thanks for a marvellous mixed bag of goodies (and the not so good). Just wanted to chime in with a little bit of praise for that Ledaig 10. I reckon it's got similar character to the Caol Ila 12 which is an absolute Islay stalwart. I love it as a starter for a flight of peaty drams - it gets the palate into just the right spot (dare I say "groove") to open up all the taste buds for some challenging smokey expressions. Cheers!

    Great review as always Roy. I like the way you describe your relationship with these Whiskys. Prices are soaring, that I've noticed. Managed to get the OP17 this month for £70. The way I explain the price of Whisky to my friends is like this, I can get OP12 on offer for £24. 24÷2 =12. That's £2 a year my bottle of whisky has been in safe hands, in storage.

    Hi Roy, thank you for another Recycled review. :-) I have been looking forward to this one ever since #4.
    If you like Bulleit Rye, then I would recommend trying its Diageo sibling: George Dickel Rye, also at 45%. BTW rumours go that both are sourced from MGP/LDI by Diageo.
    Rittenhouse Rye Bottled-in-Bond 100 Proof @50% by Heaven Hill is also a ‘must-try’ rye in the journey. Then last but not least, Sazerac Rye 90 Proof @45% by Buffalo Trace. Works great as a neat sipper, but also very nice in the classic New Orleans cocktail: the Sazerac cocktail.

    Great metaphor for the relationship throughout a bottle! For Tobermory, I really like the 1994 Montgomery bottling (46% bottled in 2012). I can't even remember the cask number but it was 100 US and a great option, perhaps over the 10 year house bottling (for me it was).

    Nice job, Roy. My only comment that when scoring the Auchentoshen American Oak, you have to factor in the price which is a real steal in the US right now where I can buy it a for less than $30. Yes, it’s a little one dimensional, but it’s a great, affordable, daily dram during the summer. I would score at 7.5

    • @Aqvavitae
      @Aqvavitae  6 років тому +1

      I would agree - the American Oak is a little richer than the Classic which I throw away here and perhaps worthy of an extra point - one of those will no doubt end up in a Recycled Review soon (if it hasn't already? - Wow - I should keep track!) I enjoy these rhytmic reviews! Somehow, I fail to dislike The Glenlivet Founder's Reserve. If I nose it for ten minutes before I taste it, the vanille and oak tones come alive in a nice and gentle manner (this even more after adding a few drops of water). Yeah. It's drinkable, but I'm sore at their selective distribution of the 12yo while we get stuck with an engineered and sub-par NAS replacement. FR won't poison anyone, it's not the worst, it's just cynical and hopefully for the "bin" soon. Glenlivet should never have watered down their brand in this way, much like Laphroaig with Select. It's close to shameful. Thanks Sidney.

    Great video Roy. And so on par with many of my experiences. Let's start with that elephant in the room. Bowmore. I love B'more. I want to continue to love B'more but what is it? I have a 12 and 15. Is it the choking level of colouring? They say that E150 has no taste but does it blunt all verve and vitality? I love that Ledaig 10 also. Brilliant value. Have been desperately looking for a Tobermory here, no luck. Is it an unpeated Ledaig? Like a Springbank/Longrow scenario? The Tobermory just not being peated? I use the 'Fiddich 12 the same way, a $60 palate starter. If I am not feeling it there is no flight. We stick to the Fiddich. Can't say enough about that lug bottle 16 Longmorn. The new version 16 is not the same. My first love, Laph, have turned me a little recently. I love the Lore and the 15. But the rest ...meh, at the moment.

    • @Aqvavitae
      @Aqvavitae  6 років тому

      I'd still encourage folk to try the Tobermory (especially given how many folk love it and the variance of batches) and yes it's unpeated from Tobermory in Mull, the Ledaig is their peated. It's not expensive and wouldn't be a waste of reasonable money.

    The Glenlivet Select Reserve. What happened to the cooking whisky category score? How does it compare to cheap Blend?
    I have never got on with Tobermory 10 finding it a bit vegetablely like boiled cabbage juice. My Dad loves it though! On the other hand, I always make sure I have a bottle of Ledaig 10 at home but you need to be in the mood for it. I find it doesn't go well with Beef but very well with cheese, fish or chicken.
    We can only get the Old Pulteney 12 here in Israel. I'd love to buy some of their single cask Ex-Bourbon Cask strength bottlings. I've tasted some at the distillery. Really good stuff.
    I find Bowmore to be the poor man of Islay. When I am in the mood to buy a new or expensive Islay it will be a Kilchoman, Bruichladdich, Lagavulin or Caol Ila. I always make sure I have a Laphroiaig 10 and Ardbeg 10 in my collection. Bowmore, however, doesn't get a look in. I didn't even bother with the tour when I have been in Islay. I've visited the shop a few times but that's only because it's opposite the road to the Co-Op supermarket.
    Whoops! I edited thos comment because I forgot to tell you how much I enjoyed the video. In my opinion, you are the No.1 Whisky Channel.

      They reap what they sow Reb. WRT the Founder's Reserve? It's probably better than a cheap blend sure - but there are a bunch of good blends for the same price (or less) that I'd have over it. It's sickly, cynical and dilutes the Glenlivet brand.

If people wanted relentlessly “everything’s brilliant” vlogs, they’d be watching some other channels instead. Great work, as usual! 👍

      Cheers Roy - always a pleasure to have you watch and comment buddy - looking forward to next week's tastings! (Except I don't know where my Friday ticket is 😬 )

      Aqvavitae I have both our tickets. Got myself a wee Moleskine-alike too. Don’t laugh as I struggle to keep notes. When I try to articulate what I’m getting in a dram, it’s like me trying to imagine poetry in Cantonese. I know the words exist, but I don’t know what goes where? Maybe need to go right back to beginners school and start with a flavour wheel? 🤔

      Or just get those bottles bust open - and give it time. Tasting is pretty hard work, for sure! Bet I'm late for the tasting as I trash the house before hand looking for the ticket.

      Aqvavitae write this down on the back of your hand... “My “Royfriend” has my ticket” to extend your whisky relationship metaphor to breaking point 😂

    Thank god, I was beginning to think it was just me that didn't rate the current Bowmores. I gave 2 nearly full bottles away as I knew I wasn't going to enjoy them. There's a sour note to them I just don't get on with.

      The Whisky Bowman Yep. The sour note used to be integrated and part of the background. Now it's forefront and noisy and gets in the way, sitting as a heavy-duty herbal, grapefruit and soapy aftertaste. The good news? I recently had a 9yo and a 10yo which were both great again. Bowmore could be on its way back. 👍 Thanks for watching.

      @@Aqvavitae Soapy, that's it. There was something I couldn't quite put my finger on and that sounds about right. Interesting to hear about the new expressions. I think I'll try before I buy though. I wonder if they have any in The Pot Still...

      The Whisky Bowman where are you based? (I feel like I should know that 🤔)

      @@Aqvavitae No reason you should, I don't believe we've bumped into each other, although I do live not far (about 20 miles) from Glasgow. Slainte.

    I just had the Bowmore 12 for the first time, I wasn't thrilled either. I liked the 15yo Darkest.

      If you can find the Warehouseman's 17yo - it's a peach! Thanks Dan.

      Aqvavitae I’ve been watching here and there. It’s crazy with the kids and wife home for the summer 😩.
