They think the tunnels were built by the Romans and later found when Parisians fell through the ground to the tunnels via sinkholes. Around the 18th century Paris opened up the catacombs and started storing bodies there. Paris had a surplus of bodies from a plague and many wars and did not an enough space in the cemeteries. Today the tunnels are a tourist attraction, they’ve taken the bodies and dismembered the bones to create patterns and “art” int he tunnels.
