    Even some of the kids near the beginning of the video were dress in 1980's style. Can't tell if they dressed for the occasion or if its just fashionable again. Really awesome.

    I miss mall arcades. We have an arcade here that you play a set fee to enter and all the games are set to free play.

      Theres an arcade near me like that too, but they don't take care of it, most of the games are broken, and theres only a few games I could enjoy. Its a trampoline park, and thats their main thing, and its a popular place, but the arcade is dead, it needs to be renovated and fast.

    Only one detail of this arcade was missed. There was too much lighting. Arcades of the era were DARK and almost never had windows. Barrel of Fun and Aladdin's Castle were the biggest offenders, though some Red Baron's were the same way. The more well lit and windowed arcades didn't become common until the 90's with places like Cyberstation and newly built Chuck E. Cheese's. (I remember Showbiz being dark in parts, but well lit in others.)

      That's not entirely accurate, yes there were many dark arcades. But just as many lit as well, I can remember about 4 or 5 of them before 85 in the Phoenix area. That would include 2 of the largest in town at the time. Golf N Stuff(Metrocenter) and what is now Sunsplash in Mesa. Most of the lit shops were little mom and pop establishments. There were a couple around Fiesta Mall(in Fiesta Village) that I used to frequent quite often.

      @vaultboy123 7 років тому +3

      That's the first thing that stood out to me -- this arcade is too well-lit to come off as "authentic". The only well-lit arcades that I recall were the small ones in supermarkets like Foodland and retail stores like Gem in Hawaii. Otherwise, they were all dark and stuffy.

      My friends and I used to hang out in the arcade at Willowbrook Mall in Houston, TX back in the late eighties and early nineties and it was really dark, the music blaring, and everyone in there was elbow to elbow. It doesn't get any better than that.

    • @Xezlec
      @Xezlec 7 років тому +3

      What stood out to me was the amount of space. I remember those arcades being really dense, and having to kind of elbow past people. I also remember them being louder than this, with all the games turned up just a little too loud. Also, not only dark but sometimes even with neon signage on the walls. Anyone else remember arcades like this?

    I'm surprised you didn't interview the owner(Dr. Lines), he is always up for that.

    Wow I am impressed by this arcade; this is just the way I remember arcades of the 80's. I could easily spend tons of quarters in there ( and since I"m not so good at playing this would be over quickly ). Thank you, Retail Archaeology - you have transported me to one of my favorite places/ times.

    7:51 what a classic image of the three boys hanging around one arcade game. One boy is playing the game the while the other two boys are watching over his shoulder as he plays the game. Reminds me of classic 80's movies with that iconic arcade scenes in it.

    I graduated from high school in '83 and yes, these were fun places. In this arcade, I mastered the Tron & Kickman games. On Tron, I reached 1,450,000...found that each game within the levels would repeat. Then kickman, that game had a kill screen much like Pacman had. Now to make this place really complete...some late 70's & early 80's pinball machines. My favorite was 8-ball Deluxe! Other games I was good at was Pacman & Bank Panic.

    The Tempest Cocktail Cabinet? Not only have I seen one, I played it. I remember back in the early 80s my father took me to the local skating rink where they had one. I had never seen anything like it before, and then my father gave me some quarters so I could play it! I also remember seeing a Berzerk upright arcade game there as well, but I didn't play it.

    Looking at those modern kids' reactions said it all. Despite how good technology is for them nowadays. They can't resist walking round in awe, wondering what's going on in those screens. Just as it was for Us in our day.

    I had flashbacks of GAMELAND Arcade in Murfreesboro, Tennessee; Twisted Sister blaring through Kenwood speakers, so much smoke in there that light from the cabinets would make visible surreal swirling shapes in the air and teenage boys would try and gain the attention of huge haired girls by getting the highest score on Space Harrier, Joust or Gauntlet.
    This was awesome and kudos to the owners of this place, folks should help them out by patronizing this establishment.

    I love seeing these arcades but I notice none of them are as big as the one in Syracuse, NY back in the day. It was called Buttons Arcade and it had a lot of games, pinball, pool tables, air hockey, foosball and a great snack bar. He went to tokens instead of quarters. 7 tokens for a dollar and 40 tokens for $5 and the games were still 1 token per play. Definitely the best arcade in America. Closed in 1998 after 20 plus years. Bob Button was awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I want to see a 1993 version of this arcade. That part about having no music in an arcade and absorbing the ambiance is a major thing for me. Although a few arcades did have music playing in the background and had a jukebox that filled the whole arcade (and sent it to dead silence for a while after when the song you chose finished), the volume wasn't loud and certainaly did not overwhelm the arcade machines' sounds in attract mode. The fact that they had classical music in addition to hit music of the time also really helped class up the place.

    Thank you so much for teaching me the correct term for those tables with the arcade games in them -- now I'll know they're called "cocktail cabinets"! There used to be two of those cocktail cabinets at the Pizza Hut my family and I used to go to in the '80s: one of them had a Pac-Man and the other had a Centipede game. Rarely was I allowed to play arcade games because my parents were frugal and I only played games at birthday parties, but those two were the two games I would always elect to play, especially Centipede. I loved that game! I also remember how, while I never used to play Pole Position myself I did have fun watching other people play the game. Something else I always used to love playing at those arcade areas where birthday parties are held was Skee-Ball. That was always a MUST for me, even as a teenager attending younger cousins' birthday parties. Hell, even as I approach "midlife crisis" age, I would totally be down for playing Skee-Ball. Hmm. Think I should look into where I could go to play that game....

    Wow, talk about bringing back memories...
    I worked at a mall arcade for a couple of years back in '86. Fantastic times, I surely miss them. How I wish the time frame could be altered by even a couple of years to include games from '86-'88. Gauntlet 2, Out Run, Renegade... But then you would need a bigger room!
    I freely admit my guilt for my love of pinball as well. What I wouldn't give to be able to play some of them one more time: Nip-it, Caveman, Xenon, Firepower 1 and 2, F-14 Tomcat, High Speed, Gorgar. I'm sure there are dozens more I could name if my brain worked as well as it used to...
    Many, many thanks for posting this!

    Tempest was my first favorite game, and your right about it not making a good transition to any platform due to the spin controller. You would have to build a heavy box just to hold a spin controller to play this in any home version, and the spinner would have to come off of one of the old Tempest Machine.
    I also really liked Galaga, especially the version with chip setting that speeds up the rate of fire. Another game I miss was probably the very first I got proficient with was Astro Blaster. We used to have a convenience store that had a small separate arcade/pool hall. They had Defender, Pac-Man, Astro Blaster, Frogger and a cocktail Space invaders. After high school, I went to work for a franchise location of Showbiz Pizza Place. Video games, beer, beautiful high school girls and pizza. (What more could an 18-19-year-old need in 1986?)

    my arcades while growing up were very dark at night, always had a funky carpet usually with some kind of pattern that glowed under dark or neon light, and, for some reason, often had music going on. they would also have bar stools because we would play for hours, and some even screwed cigarette trays on the side of the cabinet as shown.

    SiniStar is a cool game. There's a devil who pops up and calls you a coward every time you mess up. I had a friend who was good at video games and SiniStar always got the better of him. A laundromat I went to in the early 80s had Berzerk and Galaga. Doing laundry was something I looked forward to. Video games then were for everyone, not just for whizzes and other eggheads. You could suck at them and still have fun.

    I would kill to find an arcade like this. Nowadays you have to go to Dave and Buster's. They barely have any old games. Now they're infested with app-turned-arcade games. No, I did not come here to play Fruit Ninja or Subway Surfer. That's for my phone!

    I used to have a arcade like this at my local mall but all the arcade cabinets where removed... I have no idea what they are planning for there

    Very cool. I graduated high school in '86 and we had a huge arcade in the bowling alley where I lived. Love all those games. I don't get it..is this owned by some eccentric rich guy that just randomly lets people come play with his collection? Are those gamea always in that spot, or does he move them in and out every time he decides to "open the portal" to 1985? If this was open all the time, I would literally plan a trip there from Seattle to visit.

    Hi, You Missed the Best One: ANTEATER, it was next to Paperboy. When I played Anteater in the 90s it was a Very Old beaten down cabinet sitting in a dark corner of our local Arcade, nobody wanted to play it, but it was cheap and it was always there available. Anteater is an "acquired taste", the Graphics are boring but the Colors and Gameplay can be very addictive once you know what you're doing, the game is about trying to eat Ants, Worms and Spiders without getting bitten by the Bugs walking on the screen. You should try to play Anteater sometime. Thanx for the Video. 😎

    I went on their website. Do they give any kind of heads up as to when they open? Or just check the site

    Of the games in your video, I probably shoved the most quarters into Joust.

      Joust is great. I really like the sequel too but that's a really hard game to find! Thanks for watching!

    I would have loved to have seen a Qix arcade game, which was released in 1981. If you have never heard of it, look it up on UA-cam and watch some of the game play. The sound effects alone were fabulous. Also, a Super Pac-Man Would have been awesome, too.

      Qix is a lot of fun, I used to play it on my Game Boy quite a bit. I have the Qix arcade game in my multicade in my own garage arcade :-) Thanks for watching!
