  • After ridiculously expensive quotes from companies to fit a CCTV system to my home I carried out many hours of research (which you can see in Part 1) - click here for the link • Choosing the right CCT...
I eventually decided to purchase a hard wired Hikvision CCTV system.
This video shows how I installed the system myself.
In the comments a few of you guys have asked me to provide links to the products I purchased. I have provided links below to similar products available from the company I purchased the CCTV from online. This company is Doris CCTV in London. I have no affiliations with this company but found them reasonably priced and very helpful when I called them on the telephone for advice when researching the project.
Hikvision 4 channel DVR - www.doriscctv.co.uk/4ch-hikvi... (they will supply the cables also)
2mp dome style camera with Sony Stervis Starlight chipset - www.doriscctv.co.uk/2mp-1080p...
Varifocal dome style camera with Sony Stervis Starlight chipset - www.doriscctv.co.uk/longse-5m...
Outdoor weatherproof cable junction boxes - www.doriscctv.co.uk/outdoor-w...
If this video helps you out with your project please let me know in the comments and hit the "like" button.
    Happy days!

Very useful video! One of my 4 Hikvision cameras is playing up- fitted 3 years ago. Going to move one working camera from another less important location. Seeing how they all work and fit together is a big help.

He did it and it works for him. All these negative comments from pros are just oh sh-t reactions that most anyone can do it themselves. Does it look pretty? No. Is it functional? Yes and it works for him. These alarm and security people are just scared that DIY systems are eating their lunch.

I do not agree with you, when pros do the install its done in such a way that its neat tidy the the system is setup properly yes it can be expensive but sometimes you get a better quality installation and one that suits your requirments better. Also faults are difficult to put right when you don,t know what your doing understanding how to set the device up on your mobile the motion detection for you to receive notifications on your phone a pro can do that much better than a diy person. However i have to say well done for the guy that installed his own system it could have been neater but hats off for having the guts to fit some home security. Everyone one to there own trade.

Good video, but just one point I'd like to make. Whenever cables enter a box or camera, it's a good idea to run the cable down lower than the box or camera and then back up to the entry. This ensures that water running down the cable isn't fed straight into box or camera. Good video none the less.

Not judging your install as effective for your needs however you may wish to consider the following. Junction box for rear of camera with conduit running to loft space if you cannot mount cameras on the soffit directly. This will neaten the cable presence and reduce the risk of water ingress into the camera housing. I would always aim to hide the cables however it is against building regs to run anything other than electricity supply tails into the external cavity of a domestic dwelling so conduit or cable capping is often the best and neatest solution. Obviously all this comes at a cost not only the materials but the expense of time and equipment (cable rods etc) which is why a commercial installer will charge more. All that being said if you are happy then nothing else matters but important that someone who is considering security installations should be aware of the benefits of a professional install. Thanks again.

You are right but the problem with having a Camera up that high you won’t be able to catch faces as easily. have at that height that he has them they are okay but the cable management is not on point it’s okay if you’re only doing it temporarily permanently it should be put through conduit like you said. What I would’ve done is two cameras back to back on each corner I would’ve run the cable straight into that junction box and then the two cables together and through the soffit so it looks like all one cable going up if you know what I mean.

TVI system works for an ugrade to an analogue systen where one already has the co-ax and ELV power cable but POE can make for a much better system, one CAT5/6 cable, no junction boxes, just use the extention back box on a turret camera and join cable in there.
No need for an extra power supply as powered from the DVR and no cost saving to speak of, nowadays.
Cable clips are readily available in black, with masonry nails, much the same as aerial cable clips.
I sort of get why some diy installs are using CVBS and TVI ,especially when upgrading existing system without the need to rewire, but POE does work out better in a number of areas, not least of which is the size of the hole required for the cable and no need to pass bulky plugs/connectors through such holes.
It's almost impossible to make a neat job when a cable has plugs/connectors attached.
suppliers tell me that the manufacturing of TVI products will be reduced in the future now POE is more popular.
In fact, TVI was designed for upgrades to existing co-ax wired CVBS systems.
Nice touch using the passivated anti corrosion screws for fixing 👍

Always stay one step ahead two systems are better than one, hiding cameras in clothes line poles or gate posts or fictitious tree stumps are not something people would normally expect or a wifi camera in your car facing the house.

Hi I have same camera and 5mp. One dome is displaying "no video". Tried moving lead from its port to another in back of dvr and still doesn't work so I assume I have eliminated that there is no fault with the wire. Outside the dome does not show the red led lights whereas the other 3 do so I assume dome is faulty. Is it a simple matter of replacing it and connecting to existing wiring? Also could I use a color vu dome for a replacement as other 3 are black and white picture? Thankyou

There is a reason we charge a premium for CCTV install, you wouldnt see any cables, proper junction boxes would be used and if you were to see cables thay would be clipped with the correct cables or containment, this, might have used 4mm lens and put on the soffit, but good luck anyway

When you look for quotes online and get, what you believe, to be 2 expensive quotes and 1 really cheap quote, and consider the cheap quote, this is why it’s cheap. You would get what we call a weekend warrior, plumber by the week, security expert at the weekend. Something goes wrong? He won’t care or respond because he has no idea how to fix the problems and he’s to busy fixing pipes. Good luck all!
On the other hand, if he’s happy with what he’s done, fair play. I wouldn’t do it that way, not because of the wires, just because of my wife’s reactions

The amount moaning about what proper cctv installers charge. We are no different to any other tradesman charging to do specific jobs in a neat safe and proper manner. If a mechanic charges you £500 for making your breaks safe would you decide to let someone thats untrained do it for £300 less. I don,t think so. D.I.Y means working or installing something on your own home. The install could have been done better but its his home and he is happy so well done for having ago.
