As far as I can tell this is definitely not sample based. The sound you hear really is your original guitar signal but morphed by some clever digital signal processing techniques. You can prove this by scratching the string with your pick and seeing what comes out. When the DSP senses attack I think it reshapes it. It's certainly clever.
Indeed that is why it worked when you hit the strings for the percussive effect. That's why you hear every note. There is no triggered. It's just reshaping your original waveform as it happens. Ultimately all musical instruments sound very similar with the start and end dictating the character.
Attention performing guitarists: these pedals...the whole series, will bring insane new options for your band or group. Start collecting them now, as they won't be made forever. They are all ( I speak from experience here.) just phenomenal pieces of engineering. Prepare to exapnd your capabilities.
They're honestly not super technical as far as the electronics go. They're just digital algorithms triggered by an audio input. But they were and still are great pedals for any gigging guitarist, especially if you need to cover a lot of genres.
Ordered one of these just waiting for its arrival - in the MEANTIME ... I need to sit down and learn all these WONDERFUL Jazz Chords you are playing here!! HA! Great video!
I already received my Key9 and I just get a strange sounds (mix from your guitar+vibe/steel drums with EQ variations). It's just a toy to create new sounds. No chances to aproaching the real thing from this pedal. You'll get a lot of modulations instead. I will stay in love with my Roland synth .
Great for Tri-Glorious chorus, but you've got the best chorus ever in that amp behind you!!...but for those that don't, that pedal is great!!...really gives your guitar a big fat GLORIOUS sound!!...
Great demo indeed! And is amazing how EH is doing these pedals. But I'm really surprised they didn't go with a clavichord and/or wood xylophone? The organ and steel drums are nice. But could imagine Very Superstitious or some Violent Femmes or Psychedelic Furs melodies ripping out of that thing. (all the kids are saying "Whaaaaa?")
Thank you for the video. I have that Roland amplifier but if you're recording in mono why did you go into the right Channel? When I use the amp in mono I go into the left side that says mono. But it sounded so good I may try the right channel as well. Also thank you for your descriptions they are quite to-the-point "nuts" "amazing" and "ridiculous".
tom, im getting very thin effects on the key 9, sounds more guitar then key effects,,,,,. do i need more drive into the beast ?? using, 355dot, and strat as input ??
old comment but if you still have this pedal, try using an ehx 9.6v power supply. my ehx good vibes has the same issue with a weak sound when using any other power supply Electro-Harmonix US96DC-200BI Power Supply
No way to tune it out unfortunately. It sounds good in this demo, but you’ll most likely not use this in a live setting. Just something to have fun with
Are there any UA-cam videos of these pedals where the guy doesn’t just play guitar licks and voicings? So far what we know: Stairway to Heaven and Smoke On The Water sound like keyboards, kinda.
Would be nice if he played it like an electric piano instead of just playing stuff no one could play on an electric piano and just guitar sounds. Otherwise a good video

I was about to say the same thing. Another giveaway is that if you change pickup positions you can hear a difference in the pedal’s tonality.
Always Tom gives an excellent demonstrattion - simply the best guitar and effects presenter on UA-cam.
That guitar is GORGEOUS.
One look at that guitar body and you cannot 'unsee' it. Ever! :)
That guitar has such a cool shape that I don't think I even mind it being pink!
The only guy who gives pedal demos that can play...
I came here for these sounds and I fell in love with that paint on the guitar
Best demo of this pedal I have seen to date. Quayle is the right person to demo this line of pedals due to his application and knowledge of tone
Not taking anything away from this guy' but you should check out Bill Rupert.

This is the way to do a demo ... fantastic thank you
10:46 - I would buy that pedal JUST to play that! Lol!
If the pedal tracking can keep up with Tom Quayle, It is already the best tracking in the world.
Ordered one of these just waiting for its arrival - in the MEANTIME ... I need to sit down and learn all these WONDERFUL Jazz Chords you are playing here!! HA! Great video!
Great demo, thanks. Lovely touch too. Enjoyed that.
Great demo Tom..
and marvelous playing

The pedal is great, the guitarist is great , the demo is great ...
Tom makes every guitar or effect pedal sound fantastic. It is not Key9- its Tom.
I enjoyed the sounds, enjoyed the playing, and could tell you were really having fun with this pedal. Excellent demo!
Great for Tri-Glorious chorus, but you've got the best chorus ever in that amp behind you!!...but for those that don't, that pedal is great!!...really gives your guitar a big fat GLORIOUS sound!!...
Plays some great jazz lines blending with chords. Dynamo, suitcase, mallets, 88 sound the best imo.
Bruh I honestly don't know what's cooler: his guitar playing (cleaner than Napoleon's wardrobe), or the pedal (basically dark magic)
The pedal great , the guy who plays guitar Amazing thanks man ...
Great playing! (I envy you) Great effect(-sounds). Thanks for this lovely demo.
Amazing guitar player....
Good dimostration
Thank you for this video
Nice features on this pedal too, I've heard quite a few, but I just wish there was a pedal with Just regular keyboard/piano sound.

At last a clever and musical demo that the Key9 could be proud of ! Thanks Tom !
Man your playing is insanely clean, wow
Sounded great, but that fluent hybrid picking technique is just out of this world
great demo, thanks.
Starts at 2:50 ;)
great demo! fantastic playing.
I want this... Badly!
Great review btw straightforward informative and stunning playing too
+Philip Copping Thanks for supporting the video and the channel
good playing
Awesome demo bro, I'll be buying one of these pedals soon, no doubt.
Guitar available at Adultz Playstore
Insane guitarist too 👌
great demo!
I put it through a Pog for organ sounds. Not an easy pedal to tweak. Bass9 is my favorite of the series.
You're a great player, man. Thanks for the vid.
Hi great video, are they any guitar pedals that simulate a grand piano or acoustic piano sounds?
The pedal suits your fine dexterous playing!
great vid ,pity you didn,t do bit of Supertramp on the Wurly,ha thanx for the upload

I‘m more impressed by the insane hybrid picking skills.
I got the Synth 9 and mel9. I'm out of money. GAS sucks. This pedal sounds so awesome.
Which one do you prefer/recommend ?
More impressed with your playing than the really cool pedal. Nice job. Rock on.
I'm assuming the intro riff is played by Martin Miller? Great videos guys
Can you hook up an expression pedal for the trem effects?
This guy: Peaches en Regalia
Me, an intellectual: Sinister Footwear
Hi how about acoustic guitar can play that effect
What chords are they on 8:30 ? sounds amazing!!
What guitar is that?! I neeeed
Is it any use to a rhythm guitar?
Weird guitar, but nice sound and great playing.
Does this pedal also have a preset for harpsichord sound? Think of Yardbirds' For your love...
It might be nice to have a pedal that makes a guitar sound like an orchestra. Anything like that coming down the line?
Their Mel9 has an Orchestra setting...👍
Choirs as well!
A good Roland Guitar Synth. No real sound will come from a pedal.
Guitar is like “SPLAT!”
Just a tip. Your “ s’ s” sounds like. High hit with a hi pass filter resonance turned up.
No latency at all?
Why no piano effect?
What chords is he playing?😣 this is the sound im looking for especially those passing chords like 4:03
Lots of major 7ths
tom, im getting very thin effects on the key 9, sounds more guitar then key effects,,,,,. do i need more drive into the beast ?? using, 355dot, and strat as input ??

Electro-Harmonix US96DC-200BI Power Supply
@@Trent_Sutphin will do m8, thank you
@@howardsix9708
Don't know if you got it figured out yet' low output pickups or pickups not close enough to the strings will cause that.
mate can I get a Stanley Jordan kind of sound out of it? like the one he uses in autumn leaves
That guitar looks awesome
What a shame the high overtones aren’t in tune. Can you completely remove it by turning down the far right dial?
No way to tune it out unfortunately. It sounds good in this demo, but you’ll most likely not use this in a live setting. Just something to have fun with
Any lag time between when the pick hits the string and when the key sound is generated?
Hello Dan, We find tracking on EHX pedals to be some of the best available. Any lag would be minute and un-noticeable
Hi,can play this in Acoutic guitar?
What does the "88" sound like ?
From the looks of that
Shitty looking guitar
Should ask him about how the 69 sounds.
great playing!
pedal is great... but so is your RH hybrid picking
Guitar looks it came from an episode of the Simmons....👍
why not use keyb with it
HOW MUCH ARE THESE THINGS?
I have old.Roland syth 13 pin gr-55. The attack is glitchy .. you can't play too fast.
2 or more of those settings sounded like an electric guitar w/ fx.
Just ordered one yesterday. My midi gear has been gathering dust. Now obsolete.
Was a compressor used before the K9?
Hi Eric,
No compression was used in this demo
There is a solid state amp after the Key9. It's important.
Don't forget to mute your camera audio as you're playing
But guitarists get upset when you use a ribbon controller with guitar sounds. 🤷🏼♂️
THE START: ua-cam.com/video/Ul38Bg5P2TE/v-deo.htmlm49s
It's a guitar! No, it's a sex toy! It's BOTH!
the pedal sounds are beautiful, but so are your chords / notes.
Amnesty International called. That guitar is a crime against humanity and they are taking you to a court of justice.
Screw and glue, a kinky pink guitar named "Erotic." Add those to the instant gratification factor and this has become NSFW.
I'd prefer more traditional keyboards and organ voices .. I only.hear 2 or.3 possible voices are.worth wild
Mr. Matthews wants us to buy B9 and C9 for the other useful ones.
@@poulwinther - They should take the best 3 samplings of each and combine them into a single useable effect .
@@WileECoyotey Or how about being able to chose any 9 from Bass9, Key9, B9, C9, Mel9 and Synth9? :-D
Yes the guitar is ugly, i agree. Almost didn't watch the demo but it's really, really very good, thank you!
My god, every f..in music gear review has to be like this. Advanced player, show what is esential, not fake advertising basics. Thanks

That guitar is ugly as hell, but great video!
coltj14 omg agreed it’s so ugly
it looks like two pink dildo.....which hits the G Spo......i mean string
it got prince vibes man, its sexy :D!
yep... looks like a G SPot Stimulator ahahahaaaa.
Best lookin guitar Ive ever seen..
Connect four walls
It says 'piano' but i didn't hear one. Great pedal tho.
Derek Drums It replicates an electric piano, not an acoustic piano, you simpleton.
Less talky, more play-ie
if you played that organ sound in front of people i hope noone throws stuff at u... too silly otherwise great scales
All I keep thinking is let me take a hacksaw to that hideous looking guitar 😵
Good content, but:
Talk: 80%
Sound: 20%
A feedback for next videos:
More sound, less talk.
I dislike that guitar body to a severe degree
It's about the ugliest guitar I've ever seen
Looks like a douche bottle.
Just got a key9 and like another commenter 2 yrs ago, get a mix of guitar+ steel drum sounds. No keyboard sound.
