I’ve been married for 37 years and we started with nothing… I mean our dinners were 25 cent box macaroni and cheese. Chicken and beef were a treat… I have been meal planning for all 37 years. I am not going to lie - I am SICK of trying to figure out what to cook after that long, but I has allowed us to buy our house and a second home both of which are mortgage free. All three kids are through college (and we are debt free). As you said - keep your eye on the prize!!!
When we got married (lots of years ago) people kept telling us that young people couldn't afford a home. We saved like fiends - husband was Navy & deployed, so worked full time plus two side gigs. Got a town home. Later moved up to a fixer house. Then the Navy moved us. We rented out the house and bought a condo. Now, that condo is rented, and we upgraded to a nicer house in a cheaper area. It can be done!
The first tip was the best thing my husband and I ever did. We both had good paying jobs and were by no means low income but when we moved in together we found the cheapest apt we could. Even though all our friends were living in nice apts! Then we spent money on only rent and groceries for a year. That's how we got a house plus a healthy savings account. I'm always happy that even though we were making good incomes we chose not to spend it because it's made a huge difference in our lives. Now we have assets instead of throw pillows.
My super lazy meal plan: Once a week or so I bake a family pack of chicken thighs. The leftovers come n handy to toss into salads, soups, stir fry, sandwiches, etc. I also boil about a dozen eggs to have for egg salad, salad add ins, quick snacks. A fave quickie meal is salmon patties: one egg, one can salmon, season however u like it. I also make a big batch of potato salad or Waldorf salad about once a week. Great to have these things on hand. Also, when I bake potatoes or yams, I make extras to use later. All cheap, healthy, n easy
I love your channel. I just wanted to say that I still buy my furniture from marketplace even though I don’t “need” to. I would rather buy high end stuff from there at a great price and pocket the rest. ❤️
Your videos are so motivating and funny. After going through 10 years of major illnesses, I was looking for something to spark my hope and ambition. I found you. Thank you so much! Do you realize you are making an impression on us 60+s? We had some life events happen that put me on disability, after 2 years of no income for me. We were losing our rent to buy home and ended up buying a real fixer upper. We were given a construction loan and 1 year to get all the major stuff done (roof, electric, flooring, bathroom rip out etc). My husband did all the work himself. After 1 year they refinanced us into a mortgage and we had 40K in equity. We were able to pay down 20K of mortgage and took advantage of the recent housing boom to refiance our mortgage into a First Lien HELOC, which gave us enough to pay off everything but the HELOC. Now all our money goes into paying down HELOC. We should have our house paid off in 6-7 years. If y'all can do this when you are young you will be set to invest in rental properties and have your mortgages paid off quickly. Thank you again for giving me hope! Love your channel!❤
We're saving for a house and I've floated the allowance jars idea multiple times. The problem is that I basically spend no money because I grew up with super frugal parents. He spends a lot of money on takeout food and coffees, and replaces things when they're just a little old instead of fixing or maintaining them and he "deserves nice things". I think the personal spending hurdle is the hardest one.
Yeah it's really hard when you're partner isn't on board with saving. Maybe you could start the allowance jar at a higher amount, like $20 a week? I'm sure he's spending more than that! But it may seem more of a fair amount to him, I don't know... Good luck!!
Ariel, I just want to say that I am so proud of you. You have so much wisdom for such a young woman. God has really blessed you with wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. I enjoy your videos very much. Stay humble, and keep God first place. God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. God bless you and your family 😊 Have a great weekend 🌞
We have the house and now we are saving for renovations. We saved about 100k by getting an outdated, but incredibly well kept, home. So lower payments are allowing us to save for things like bathtubs, dishwashers, and landscaping. It’s an adventure.
Best financial advice video on the internet! My husband & I stayed in a studio apartment that was under 300sq ft, no dishwasher, no TV, we used our 1 laptop, & only a mini fridge for $450/mo We only used a card table & some free chairs & our TWIN SIZE mattress as the couch 🛋 Staying there for the first 6mo of our marriage made it possible for us to buy our 1st duplex, which we lived in one side of for 4yrs only paying $350 of the mortgage bc our tenant paid the rest. That saved us 70k in 4yrs, with which we bought 2 more duplexes & we live in one totally free! We have enough for a sizable home now & we’re only 7yrs married at 27yrs old. & we will only have to pay $600/mo of our mortgage when we buy the house, bc of the $900 we can rent the apartment we move out of!
Interesting take on the allowance jars! My fiancé and I share one account for everything apart from costs that are truly separate, such as phone bills and streaming services that one of us uses, but the other doesn't (spotify, in our case, for example). For the costs that are separate, we have our own personal accounts. This is also where our salaries are paid on. For me, it's not only to avoid discussions on: why did you spend money on X?, but also for safety purposes. I feel a lot safer knowing I have my own account, my own savings, in the absolute worst case scenario. We save together, pay bills together, but also have our allowances and our own savings for higher cost purchases for ourselves or anything, really.
This is such a cool video! I live in Mexico so wages are not so great. We do some things like you (meal plan, allowance jar, live in a low cost city) The only thing we absolutely refused was to not buy nice furniture/appliances. My thoughts are, you save for 1 ítem, buy smart, invest on them and take good care of them..you will save on having to fix/replace. So far so good :)
I like your videos, but a home like you rented could be reported in my area for safety issues and landlord would need to fix them or you get out of your lease. Some of these cheaper places end up costing you more money in your electricity and water bills, so if you see an old heating and air unit and the home isn’t properly insulated, do not rent it. Also another tip, speak to a mortgage lender to learn what you should do for pre-approval for a mortgage. There are first time home buyer loans where you do not need to put money down, the lender pays it, or the lender rolls it into your loan. A lot of people will be surprised at how little they need to do to be approved for a mortgage. I did it this way to buy my first home at 23. I bought a good condition home in need if updates that had been foreclosed on, no money down. After signing, I already had 30k in equity. The companies that look for mortgages through several companies for you, are so helpful with letting you know what to do.
I live in Simi Valley, CA. By the Reagan library. I think an apartment here is now going for $2400 a month! We have a home. Yeah, I saved lots by living in a apartment below my budget. Your pre meal planning video sounds like me. I’m finding that putting something on the menu when I think of it is best. I had most of this week planned already. Are use a calendar and sticky notes. I could move the sticky notes from month to month My next step is to shop my fridge and pantry first. Not only will it give me ideas, but I’ll try better to not waste food Just love your videos!!!
Thank you! I love meal planning. I don't know how I ever survived beforehand 😅 it really does save so much money and takes a lot of the stress out of your week.
Niiice. Your house is also blue. I managed to save 20k in my 20's working at Walmart while living with my parents. Now I bought the nice small home for around 100k and I'm trying to rebuild the cushion of savings to make improvements around the house(because for such a cheap price, yes there is work to be done. That's homeownerships)
That's awesome that you were able to save that much! Great job becoming a home owner 👏 I never realized just how much it cost to keep up on a home. Seems like every year 3-4 more things come up that I have to fix or replace. The not so fun side of homeownership!
Your bartender tip, Perfection!! Without a dish washa!?! Yep, it CAN be done. Sorry, lasagna for dinner! What a compromise, I'd take that over pizza, anyday! Impressive marketplace list! As always, amusing and informative!!! Keep up the good work!
Ok, ok…you almost made me lose my coffee sip on this: 🎶I wanna know what love is…🎶 You: “no you don’t!” LOL oh man, still catching my breath. Seriously though, it’s so true…I’m in my 40s and so many of my friends and family go on awesome vacations, go on awesome a.k.a. expensive dates, or how amazing house decor and home gadgets…and one has such a gorgeous outdoor covered back patio with ceiling fan…sigh. My husband and I choose to say no to all this so we can save up to pay our home off. Last night I stayed up moving some furniture, plants and throw pillows around to make things look fresh and new instead of spending money on home decor. To us, It’s worth saving the money so we can be free of a mortgage payment. (Then I’m gonna save up to pay cash for some home renovations!)
Yes, I agree! We're also hoping to pay off our home within the next 10 years. Good luck to you guys! Though I'm sure you don't need it, you seem financially smart 😊
Thank you so much for your channel I just found it and I'm really excited about it we just downsized my son and I to an RV and my dad allowed us the opportunity which we were desperately searching for a way to not pay $1,100 a month to stay where we were staying and the downstairs was a good idea but it's hard sometimes thank you for helping me not feel so alone. I hate it sometimes
its definitely hard... I hated our apartment too. But just remember that your time will come and it will come a lot faster for you then others because of your sacrifices now! You kill me with laughter. I don't have kids, am divorced, and live in a tiny flat. But you are infectious. Please move to scotland and live next door 😂
I loved this video!! You are so funny!! Great tips! I literally liked the video (as I always do) as soon as you said that would be a great tip for you today lmao it was so funny hahahahaha your editing skills are amazing & so entertaining hahaha
Thank you Wanna! I thought that would be a good way to sneak in getting some likes 🤣 you should see how much time I spend editing a week.. it's a miracle I can even get videos up in time!!
Hey Brittany! You are welcome 😊 I pray you'll be able to get a house soon! I remember the days of having a baby and an apartment and they were not easy!
I just watched this old video. Great info. When you were talking about Date Nites did you say you went geocaching? You said it so quick I wasn't sure I heard it right. We love geocaching. We have been doing it since 2006.
I was going to buying new forniture for the living room from Ikea (I'm pregnant and in a kind of nesting mood) but you stopped me and made me think about using what I got and saving for the future (and who knows how it's going to be needing!) I agree with the Meal plan: it saved us more or less than 160 euros (162 $) a month (2000 a years), and now I rarely waste food in the fridge. I recently discover your channel and i really enjoy watching your videos. Hi from Italy!😄
This video was awesome .... but...... It costs $1,500 to treat for bedbugs... which is what we ended up paying the last time we got used furniture so I'd rather spend the 800 on a new couch instead . Personal opinion.
oh Kristal that's horrible!! I probably would never buy a used couch again either if that happened to me... I've gotten lucky so far! Sorry you had to deal with that.
Windows - there is a special tool just to cut open windows - really. it has a triangular blade with serrated edge on a handle. It works, I cut open windows that had not been opened in 40 years. What you are cutting is the paint that has stuck together (and maybe the windows warped a bit).
I'm single, living in Spain and my salary was 1K/month before taxes. I just resigned and going to back to freelancing, because you can't save anything with that kind of income. Thank God my rent is just 350€, but it was still miserable
Started watching you over the summer and tried out some of the FlyLady stuff and the meal planning tips have been the best. I’ve always tried to meal plan, but it just never clicked. For some reason, when you explained it though it just seemed like it was so obvious. My husband texted me last Friday to see if I wanted him to grab MacD’s on the way home, and I actually said “no thanks!” I mean, it was a Friday and I had the energy to cook! Who am I? Anyway, thanks and keep doin what you do 😊
I'm trying to save 2-3 thousand pound for a nicer second hand car than the broken one I have... But after paying for food and bills and house there's not exactly much left.. any that I save end up having to be spent to fix the broken car so I can keep working. Then I'm back at the start again. The poverty trap is shit.
Warmest regards to you and your family and I'm sorry I lashed out about property taxes but here in Florida is awful. I'm on a fixed income and they keep going on forever I'll never own this home there's always the threat of being evicted
I'm sorry. Life can be frustratingly expensive. Unfairly expensive! Especially if your doing it alone. Sometimes we need to be able to get our frustrations out and it's okay with me if my video is where you do it 😊❤️
1234 Nightmare road Elm city , Oklahoma Tacos are made on Tuesday nights Because I watched your meal planning video .I totally lied about my address but the Oklahoma part is true 😳
I should have known better than to click on this video. The solution? Work more, basically. Not really achievable when you have EDS and Schizoeffective. It was an enjoyable video at least!
I will never own my home. I have paid off my home but the taxes every year I'll have to pay them to the day they put me in the grave and then the children are leave it to they'll have to pay for it till they're in the grave , so no none of us ever own any property. It can always be taken away
I’ve been married for 37 years and we started with nothing… I mean our dinners were 25 cent box macaroni and cheese. Chicken and beef were a treat… I have been meal planning for all 37 years. The intro was so funny 😂 your editing is so great. We’re saving for a home now too! So tired of renting 😖
Thanks Blair!! And I get it, renting is just frustrating... Praying you can save up to get a home soon 🙏😊
Omg such a great intro! 💜🤩
I’m doing a no spend this month. I’m giving myself a $10/week allowance. I hope to get this going as I have cc debt to pay off. So far so good.

Thank you for this video. You are a true inspiration.
I say yes to all of what you said except buying used couches online, you never know what those have imbedded in them 🤮 💩 🐜
“The Clinton’s” 🤣 that cracked me up every time lol!

Girl you are hilarious!!! Do you edit your own videos? Cause I want to start a UA-cam channel too and I would love funny clips like yours.
Yes, I edit my own videos. I use "Giphy .com" for a lot of the memes! Good luck with building your UA-cam channel!
I also sacrificed on my living conditions to save money for our house. I rather gone out with other people/ to other people's houses and never ever invited anyone over to mine and they accepted this as they knew why. I did hate it but I knew it was temporary. We saved nearly 40k in 3 years by sacrificing housing, eating out etc. and I would do it again in a heartbeat. It is 100% WORTH IT.
We're already in a house, but now we're saving up to start finishing our basement.
My husband and I are going to be paying certain bills for a whole year with our tax money. You could even save your tax money for a couple years to save also and build on it with regular pay check.
Cheesy signs that says Hope and Love 😂😂😂😂
I always love your videos. Hilarious and informative!! Great video!! 🤗
Thanks Mandy!! 🙂
You kill me with laughter. I don't have kids, am divorced, and live in a tiny flat. But you are infectious. Please move to scotland and live next door 😂

Awesome job my friend. Really good info.👍
Thanks so much for the helpful tips!! We’re in the process of saving for a house and need to do more of these tips for sure!

Yes!! Last time I geocatched it led me straight to a hornets nest though and I haven't since lol!
@@ThatAwkwardMom well that stinks. I haven't run across bees or hornets, etc.
You are so goofy and I love it 🤪
Always looking for ways to save money.

Lol lol lol a dental office. This is true even when you buy the house….throw pillows are expensive!! 🤣
They sure are!!!!
For furniture, don't forget Habitat for Humanity Restores, if there's one in your area.
Windows - there is a special tool just to cut open windows - really. it has a triangular blade with serrated edge on a handle. It works, I cut open windows that had not been opened in 40 years. What you are cutting is the paint that has stuck together (and maybe the windows warped a bit).
I love your videos!!!
My current place is exactly 3 times cheaper than my old place. And I'm much more than 3 times happier about it
This is a great video! You made me laugh and think all at the same time, l love it!
Thanks Juanetta!! I love making people laugh 😄
Who am I? Anyway, thanks and keep doin what you do 😊
Thanks so much for sharing and making me smile today, I love that you were able to deny McDonald's. That truly shows your success! Great job 👍
Fabulous
Ugh. Let me focus and saaave lol I really could let go of a lot of things.😭😭
“I wanna know what love iiiiiis🎶”… “no you don’t!” 🤣🤣🤣
Lol we all have a lot we have a lot of things we could let go of... You're not alone!!
Huntsville/Madison Alabama
I live in San Diego (For now. Moving to Green Bay, Wisconsin so we can buy a house) you're ABSOLUTELY welcome to visit and get some AMAZING tacos! 😊
I used a $150 antique couch for 10+ years until my husband finally talked me out of it 🤣
LOL that waiter intro cracked me up
This was a really great video thanks for the info!! Ur beautiful and funny!! Happy i connected with you!!💜
Awe, thanks friend! ❤️🥰
My husband convinced me to live in a travel trailer so we could buy a house and now 26 years later.
I ment to say 26 years later the house is paid for
Lol love the video. Did you pay off all your debt or have any before saving up for a home?
Yes! We paid off all of my husband's student loans before we got a house 🙂 we worked very hard to be able to do that!
@@ThatAwkwardMom that’s great!
I like her.. funny and informative ❤
Your so cute! And great content. We’re retired, and we’re still very thrifty. I just prefer that way.
OMG. You're too funny. I love your videos.
How do you save for a house in Toronto, Ontario? Is that even possible?
Where is the Psalm 91.4 picture (2:34 time stamp) from?
I got that from Family Dollar for $4 I believe!
You crack me up.
Lol funny & helpful
My two goals 😊
Be your dry humor. Refreshing on you tube
🤣🤣😂😂how do you keep a straight face
Trust me, there are many outtakes of bursts of laughter 😂
Warmest regards to you and your family and I'm sorry I lashed out about property taxes but here in Florida is awful. I'm on a fixed income and they keep going on forever I'll never own this home there's always the threat of being evicted
I'm sorry. Life can be frustratingly expensive. Unfairly expensive! Especially if your doing it alone. Sometimes we need to be able to get our frustrations out and it's okay with me if my video is where you do it 😊❤️
$11 an hour is that after tax is taken out?
No that is before tax was taken out. Minimum wage was lower around that time! This was around 2016
My husband takes 100 a week then uses another 50 or more. Smh. He just will not budget
If dating people spend $697/yr on dating, then people who can't get a date should get $697 a year in pity cash
Lol
Where do you guys live? Just curious if it’s the NE
New York!
You are so funny 😂
1234 Nightmare road
Elm city , Oklahoma
Tacos are made on Tuesday nights
Because I watched your meal planning video .I totally lied about my address but the Oklahoma part is true 😳
Hahahaha I love it!!!! 😂 Thanks for the laugh!
I like the Clintons comment. Spot on.
Build out or split it in two apartments and have someone rent the other one for a amount that covets upkeep and taxes.
Ur adorable gorgeous blue eyes ur humor is hilarious thanks for ur tips to save I have been spending on healthy fruit shakes 15 bucks hello?
We used to live like that. We call it war economy. It let us buy our home, and pay for education at private school of our 3 kids.
