I just sang along to this track and broke down in tears crying at the ending guitar solo because I lost my father this week. A return to this track and the themes of Emperor of Sand is exactly what I needed in this moment. Thank you, Mastodon.
I lost my mom in July, on my actual birthday, from brain cancer. I feel you brother. stay strong. Emperor of Sand came out right when she was diagnosed. The album is about how cancer/disease/death has touched all of their personal lives. COuldnt have come out at a better time.
Lyrics in case anyone wanted to sing along: I ain't no good And I live by the wood They say I ain't bad I'm the best that I've had And I know it ain't right But I'll fight my whole life to prove that I was right The day it went down I was out on my pad Not feeling so bad I'm a suspect now I'm a vagabond tramp Living out on a limb I live by the woods They say I ain't bad I'm the best that I've had And I know it ain't right But I'll fight my whole life Just to prove I was right Terrestrial fire ascending from underground Godspeed divine so we control the mound Shape shifter spirits whisper Guide me through this black sorcery Flashing teeth, aggressive tendencies Cloaked beneath silver redeems Smoking mirrors black obsidian Tell us where to find the marrow The prophecy will be realized Lord of the near and the nigh Possessor of earth and sky Guard your temples from destruction Make sure no one goes inside The prophecy will be realized Lord of the near and the nigh Possessor of earth and sky It's right in front of me The throne of maladies It's right in front of me Your malignancy It's right in front of me The throne of maladies It's right in front of me Your malignancy It's right in front of me The throne of maladies It's right in front of me Your malignancy
Honestly this track is a real masterpiece and will be timeless. I loved the original so much I can’t not hear the vocals singing in my head - makes me want to listen to them both back-to-back
@@MrPajamaShark There's an atmosphere hidden there using different instruments/sounds that I wasn't able to feel before. I would rather have had that more prominent to begin with. Now, I wish I didn't know it's there on the album version. 😔
Wasn't sure whether or not I should buy Medium Rarities, but after listening to this and the Orion cover, I have realised I absolutely need this in my collection
@@d.pinit7796 I will check them out. Ive listened to a few of their other songs and just couldn't really get into them. cold dark place just has some feel to it and it's almost retro sounding
My kid just turned 10 on Tuesday , this song just made me create her Friday lunch . It’s my first time . Not sure if she will like the peanut butter house cat soup I’ve made . I’m sure she will dig the consistency .
Sorry man, as I'm writing this....the post below yours...the guy just lost his father. It makes it hard to relate. "I just sang along to this track and broke down in tears crying at the ending guitar solo cuz I lost my father this week." "Oh man, I know....My kid turned 10 on Tuesday, this song just made me create her Friday lunch." As an interesting aside, you mentioned "peanut butter house cat soup". Cat Soup, or Nekojiru-Sou, is an excellent 30-minute avante-garde animation that I think a cross section of Mastodon fans would appreciate. It's more surreal than dark, but it is dark. The author killed herself, if that makes it any more "metal". Don't show it to your daughter though :(
The immeasurable sadness I seem to feel everyday now... it's truly tragic for someone who wants to "call herself hope" to have to admit something like that... no matter what universe...
Paolo Luvara not true every song in that album has at least 2-3 memorable moments. Each chorus is fantastic and countless amazing riffs. 3 different vocalists and of course top notch songwriting. Brilliant concept based on real life struggles. That album is ART.
Ataberk Yavaş poor compared to the first part of the discography. Few tracks are completely useless and/or ripped off from others (high road and sultan’s curse are ridiculously similar). I gotta say there are good moments indeed, and maybe it’s the best so far since 2010, but the creativity of the first releases has no comparison. I’ve seen them live many times and they’re one of my favorite bands for sure, and honestly they can’t reproduce the same clean vocals as the records. Art? Yes, but sometimes also art could be boring. Show yourself is pure boredom. Anyway Jaguar God marks the difference.
@@paololuvara7955 Yeah, I was considering your opinion until you said High Road and Sultan's Curse are ridiculously similar. This is not a good take. Plus, Show Yourself is like, 3 minutes long. Hard to even get bored at something that's doesn't even overstay its welcome
Emi Grant ok so you agree with me that it is a useless song. The other user was talking about good riffs, and I think about crusher destroyer, aqua dementia, crystal skull, capillarian crest, divinations and almost any song on those records. Don’t feel superior to others and give your point on the comparison I made on the two songs...you could even swap the lyrics and both ways it will sound the same. What they do now is simply pop-metal with super clean voices (that they can’t replicate live) and their “evolution” (because this is the classic “excuse” from fanboys defending their idols) was simply putting a synth on a song, just to say “ok, we did the Yes our own way”, but the sound is the same as the two previous releases, plus a better atmosphere. There’s been little evolution since The Hunter. I’m not saying EOS is trash, there are some very good moments, but, again, nothing compared to remission or crack the Skye...I’m not even expecting that they’ll write epic stuff like blood mountain or leviathan. Half of it doesn’t deserve to stay on the same shelf with those cited albums.
Man I’m digging this instrumental version! The guys should be proud of themselves for creating this few yrs back. Incredible with my new Bose headphones 👍🏻
Can’t stop listening 2 this 1... Seen em a few times since 04, They have some rad vocal hooks, & lotsa cool vox harmonies over the yrs but, I would love to watch em do a live all instrumental set!!
Holy shit!!! Why am I just now hearing this video! I will give you my life savings and my step-son to play this version the next time you’re in Columbus, OH.
Great! now someone edit this and put the outro into the original one and its perfect! I always thought the evil laugh at the end spoiled the beautiful outro.
I somewhat agree with you on the outro, but as another commenter pointed out: It fits with the concept of the album, as the ending laughter is from the Sultan.
This song is so f*cking underrated. It is a MASTERPIECE

Sorry for your loss. Their music has helped me through the deaths of my mother and my daughter.
My sympathies to you both. 💜

Jack Taylor Crack the skye helped me through the loss of my daughter in 2010 all the way to this day. Glad emperor of sand has done the same for you.
F
Even in instrumental the vocals echo through my head
Brent's outro solo, while unmistakably Brent in its style, is also in parts a magnificent nod to the great David Gilmour.
Love all the instrumental versions of the songs. I wish they also released the instrumental version for "Hearts Alive"
Is nobody gonna talk about that beautiful outro solo?
One of my favorites solos of all time
Yo ❤️.
This song with vocals, is to me one of the greatest songs ever written
The ending feels incomplete without the sultan's laugh
Brent really takes this song into another dimension. 🐆👼
Lyrics in case anyone wanted to sing along:
I ain't no good
And I live by the wood
They say I ain't bad
I'm the best that I've had
And I know it ain't right
But I'll fight my whole life
to prove that I was right
The day it went down
I was out on my pad
Not feeling so bad
I'm a suspect now
I'm a vagabond tramp
Living out on a limb
I live by the woods
They say I ain't bad
I'm the best that I've had
And I know it ain't right
But I'll fight my whole life
Just to prove I was right
Terrestrial fire ascending from underground
Godspeed divine so we control the mound
Shape shifter spirits whisper
Guide me through this black sorcery
Flashing teeth, aggressive tendencies
Cloaked beneath silver redeems
Smoking mirrors black obsidian
Tell us where to find the marrow
The prophecy will be realized
Lord of the near and the nigh
Possessor of earth and sky
Guard your temples from destruction
Make sure no one goes inside
The prophecy will be realized
Lord of the near and the nigh
Possessor of earth and sky
It's right in front of me
The throne of maladies
It's right in front of me
Your malignancy
It's right in front of me
The throne of maladies
It's right in front of me
Your malignancy
It's right in front of me
The throne of maladies
It's right in front of me
Your malignancy

Hello, Jaguar God.
LOLd! Fucking brilliant and absolutely hilarious.
Brent's vocals are largely what makes it a special song in the first place..
They are. And now you can hear what's happening underneath them more clearly.

That version still exists luckily.

And then those same hairs get blown away at 4:32! Goddamn!!

I dont know if music is better or lyrics and singing are better.. This song is something special to me overall.. That outro riff, it moves my soul...
Mastodon is cool as fuck
6:23, el cielo y el infierno. No se puede más... Uno de los solos más hermosos de la historia del metal.
I wish they would play this song live, its probably my favorite by them.
This song dived me into Mastodon. THIS ONE.
If you loved this, you gotta hear Crack the Skye. The entire album ^^
@@x.kalibre I did. Also a Masterpiece.
I dont listen to Mastodon, but the Cold Dark Place album is one of the greatest of all time

All problems solved the Mastodon way . Keep it slinky boys . Love you bunches !
Priceless!!
Man Brent’s a special talent. Use him more!!! This is easily the best song you’ve written since crack the skye.
Please more audio only version for other songs. it feels great!
When I was having a bad bout of insomnia I got this song stuck in my head for over 2 weeks I thought I was having a mental breakdown
Beautiful song. The first 2 minutes reminds me of "To Live is to Die".
Can't help but sing along.
my favourite Mastodon track of all time!
9/11 💜.
Thank you, Mastodon 💜.
Very acid
4:25 my head spins.

New to mastodon. Is this a new album track?
It's the instrumental version of a track that was on their previous album.
This band has four backup singers. Always enjoy the instrumental versions more. Especially Crack The Skye.

Where is the new stuff
This song, and a bunch of others have already been released on previous albums? why release it on a new album? :/
Its meant more as a compilation of unreleased stuff they had already recorded, than a "brand spanking new content" album.
