    I’m nearly 30 and have had a driving licence for over ten years. I’ve never had the confidence to drive on a motorway and have actually never needed to as my husband usually drives long distances. This is really helpful, thank you.

    Just discovered your channel 2 days ago. Passed it on to my son He has just passed his test in a diesel car. He now has a Petrol car and for the first time out in it he kept stalling. Tried again the next day, same thing happened. His frustration was clear. Then I found your videos on stalling and everything else related to new drivers He was so pleased with your channel he contacted you! And bless you! You replied Thank you so much, these are the best driving videos I’ve seen.
    Kind regards from a very Happy Mum 😊

      😂hmmm. .. started watching this video and reading the messages i saw yours while i was thinking the same thing... everyone who watches these you tube driving instructors to pay them at least 1h , it would be a huge help and recognition for what they are doing for new beginners as normally most instructors face to face don't explain in more details/ depth as they do 😢😊

    It was good to refresh my memory on motorway driving watching this video. I had a motorway lesson a couple of months ago with my instructor in his new Honda Jazz which was fun to drive and the extra power helped with overtaking etc with it being the new 1.5 Honda Jazz. I live an hour from the motorway so I had a 3 hour lesson on the motorway but we stopped at a services for a coffee break after about an hour and a half so it wasn’t too bad. I haven’t driven on the motorway since that day but I should be ok when I do get an opportunity to drive on the motorway on my own

    I've been driving for nearly 5 years now, and I've never been on a Motorway. In fact, I'll happily add extra miles to my journey to avoid them. But the day has finally come and I'm going to be driving down to Worthing (from Merseyside) which will take me about 4 hours to get to and this journey, of course, means Motorway.
    Anyway, after watching this, I definitely feel more relaxed and at ease about it, and I know that when I'm back home I'll be a much more confident driver. P.S, I'm also bringing a second driver so we can take turns.

    I passed my test early this year, the idea of driving on the motorway was daunting. I've been driving on the mway for the past 5 months almost daily now ; it's not hard at all. You just gotta put yourself in that situation, bring someone with experience if that helps.

  • @randomrachel1232
    @randomrachel1232 2 роки тому +2

    This is so helpful so much you haven’t learned yet when passing your test. My worst fear having to pull up on hard shoulder alone but least I have the knowledge to stay calm and safe if it ever happens before it does
    Good to know about the speed needing to change faster in and out of services ahead of time - I have an EV so I’ll have to use them for charging if I do a long journey
    Not worth getting done for speeding ever in first 2 years- better to get there later with no points than trying to avoid cameras

    I passed my test on the 30th June 2016. Picked my car up on the 11th July 2016 and drove for the first time on a motorway on the 17th July 2016. I only drove up a few junctions and did it on a Sunday evening. I've now driven to London Weston super mare and Blackpool on the motorway along with a lot more journeys on the motorway which were not as long distance wise

    Part of the problem is people seem to get so uptight and nervous. Everyone chill out! its a long straight road, just like on this very good video. Its far easier than driving through a city centre and id say GENERALLY (not always), the other drivers are good at looking out for each other on motorways and behaving predictably (normally, not always)

    I passed my driving test on Monday, I'm not scared so much of speed, I'll do 60/70 down a duel carriageway without issues, and I'll overtake things. I am doing my first motorway trip in the morning, yes just 3 days after my test, I am a little nervous but I live in North Devon and you can't get out of North Devon without going on a motorway so needs must, taking the mother with me for advice and help, so I'm ready for next time when I adventure out on my own

    Hi Travis! I have a question around the 9:46 mark. When you were moving from lanes 3 to 2 you made sure you were past the hgv in lane 1 before changing lanes. Would you do the same thing if it were a car/ smaller vehicle in lane 1 or would it be ok to change lanes alongside them? Hope that makes sense 😂 Thanks!

    Can you please explain what you do at each count down marker for when you want to come off and join the slip road?
    And which gear do you recommend to go in when you’re on the slip road?

    • @JamesTravis
      @JamesTravis  5 років тому +3

      Hi, the 3 stripe marker is a prompt, a count down to exit onto slip road.
      At the 3 stripes i check the mirrors to see what is happening behind and around me, then start a signal to exit.
      I continue at the same speed as I go past the marker 2 and marker 1, also checking mirrors to make sure nothing is changing.
      As I enter the slip road(deceleration lane), I start to reduce the speed. I would still be in 5th gear as I enter slip road, but would drop to 3 or 2 as my speed reduces towards end.

    At 9:00 when joining the motorway from service station you said you have less time to get on and you need to build speed up quickly, do you skip gears or you go through 3,4,5 within that short time? I know when slowing down your can skip gears but is that the case when building speed quickly?

    • @JamesTravis
      @JamesTravis  7 років тому +3

      +Ibra H great question. I would go 3,4,5 up gears.

    • @thespringonion
      @thespringonion 7 років тому +4

      Avoid skipping gears if you want to build up speed up quickly. Decent amount on the gas pedal and make good use of the rev range (for example say you normally shift up at 2-3k rpm you would want to shift at 5-6k rpm for better acceleration)

    What do you do if you get to near the end of the slip road and can't join the motorway because you couldn't find a gap?

    • @JamesTravis
      @JamesTravis  7 років тому +4

      +bhaskar samani if the motorway is busy and no gaps appear, which could happen in rush hour or if there has been an accident further up the motorway then slowing down to give way is something that you would need to consider. But outside these situations I have never been unable to find a gap.

    • @jamesdenny5078
      @jamesdenny5078 3 роки тому

      There will always be a gap. the drivers on the motorway will see you and moderate their speed to allow you in. they might even move lanes. Theyre not OBLIGED to do this, but majority of the time they will

    Got few questions just watched this video and I will be driving motorway first time very soon. 1. If your joining motorway and ur coming from left slip road and there doesn't seem be room on the right even after signaling should you carry on driving on left hard shoulder until there enough room to join? 2. When your driving in the motorway and your changing lanes from left to middle to right or the opposite way should u indicate at all times? 3. I know your supposed drive on left lane when you can however all three lanes is the maximum speed 70mph unless sign says otherwise? 4. You mentioned you can stay in left lane of motorway if you want to so does that mean you likely have be driving around 60-70 mph just in case lorry ahead of me? 5. As this video from 2017 u mentioned smart motorways is there any major changes I should be aware of if so you got any good links? Good small videos for beginners so well done and keep up the good work

    • @JamesTravis
      @JamesTravis  Рік тому +1

      The answers to your questions:
      1. If for whatever reason you cannot join onto the motorway because it is crammed full of cars, then slow down and expect to stop at the end of the slip road where the giveaway line is.
      2. Always signal to change lanes.
      3. Smart motorways are still being rolled out .

      @@YasirKhan-cy3zu when the motorway is very busy, at that point they will switch the hard shoulder to the running lane(this becomes the new left lane). But be carful for anyone that has just broken down in that lane. As soon as the highway agency spots a broken down car in the lane they will close the lane with a red X ❌ above lane. You must move out of that lane.

    Great video,, was daunting going onto the motorway for the first time a few months after I passed. Definite think there needs to be some motorway driving in the lessons before you're allowed to take a test. Instructor can decide when you're at the required skill level. But then again the test is only just getting a slight modern revamp now so I wont hold my breathe =p

    On a Smart Motorway, where the hard shoulder is a live lane. and there is a sign on the overhead gantry showing a speed limit over the hard shoulder. Were you are in the traditional lane 1, are you able to cross the solid white line of the hard shoulder to join the traffic on the hard shoulder, or should you wait until you see a broken line before moving over? - Also where the speed limit changes on the gantry, does the speed limit apply from the point you pass the sign (as with normal roads)?

    • @JamesTravis
      @JamesTravis  5 років тому

      If the smart lane is open, then you can cross line. The new speed limit applies after you pass the gantry sign.

    What do you do if you’ve moved to lane 3 to overtake a vehicle in lane 2, but then the vehicle in lane 2 speeds up above speed limit and there’s other cars in lane 2 blocking you from coming back in ? Do you let them undertake you so there’s a gap you can move back into? Or would it just be best to go over the speed limit just briefly to get ahead and back over to lane 2 and eventually lane 1?

    • @JamesTravis
      @JamesTravis  3 роки тому +1

      If the car in lane 2 has increased speed making it impossible for you to overtake without breaking speed limit, just let them pass you and show a left signal and move back to the left when it is safe to do so.

    Hi, i know you keep left if not overtaking, but if you come up behind traffic in middle or inside lane, they are not overtaking anyone, do you have to move to the left if space is available? My thoughts are that you are keeping up with traffic in front so no, and if you did that just means car behind will simply take your place in line of traffic alongside you so you then get trapped in the left hand lane if you need to overtake further on.

    • @JamesTravis
      @JamesTravis  Рік тому

      If you are in the middle lane and catch up with traffic in front of you, then either they move over to the left and let you pass or you move to the right and over take them. If the car in the middle lane or right lane is hogging the lane at a slower speed and the left lane is clear, then that is illegal for that car to do that and if caught by police would incur a fine.

    • @Steve-wz2mu
      @Steve-wz2mu Рік тому

      @@JamesTravis yep, so I should not be expected to move left because I am not overtaking something, just wait for them to get out of the way? Had some debates on another page about it, claiming someone was lane hogging even though they were simply going at pace of car in front of them.

  • @Seanmcdhuibhne
    @Seanmcdhuibhne 7 років тому +1

    Good driving. Unlike some "experts" who cannot count two seconds on the two second rule. What's your opinion on passing on left, also called undertaking, and why do instructors never mention it on their videos?

    • @JamesTravis
      @JamesTravis  7 років тому +2

      +Nineteen Sixteen thank you for your comments. I wouldn't like to undertake a driver, so dangerous. On a motorway or dual carriageway I would avoid undertaking on the left at all costs in free flowing traffic. When other drivers undertake on you for no reason apart from them rushing to get to their destination, you don't expect it.

    • @Seanmcdhuibhne
      @Seanmcdhuibhne 6 років тому

      Learn-to-drive Travis I think it's more dangerous to drive all the way around a hogger who is in lane 3 (6 lane changes) than to pass on inside. I would never ever change lanes to either side without checking all my mirrors including my convex mirrors well in advance. Motorists should be able to read the road from behind as much as in front. So again, is it legal for me to pass a slower moving vehicle doing 50mph on it's inside? It is not an offence to drive alongside another vehicle on my right, yet according to some people it's illegal for me to move forward to let myself be seen by the hogger.

    Hey Travis! I was just wondering, do you have any tips on being a more confident driver & also, how to be more confident with lane positioning, i passed my test in September and when I drive i keep thinking i'm going to hit a car to my left or to my right.
    Thanks :) ^_^

    • @JamesTravis
      @JamesTravis  7 років тому +2

      Hi, congratulations on passing your driving test. Stick to roads that you know for the time being, get good at knowing your car and good at reading the road ahead. Eventually you will want to go further afield with your driving, which is your confidence growing. If you still feel like this after a few months then try and practice the areas that you feel you are weak at. This can be by yourself or with an experienced driver that you trust or even having a one hour lesson with your old instructor. Good luck.
