Hi! I passed my driving test today on second attempt! The examiner was really lovely and honestly I think I passed because I was so relaxed, nervousness makes people do stupid / silly things. For anyone doing their test please just relax (although it can be very nerve racking) and if it helps think out loud whilst driving, this helped me! Thank you for your videos, they really helped
Couldn't agree more. Passed my test first time last Tuesday and I was panicking the whole time. Had 8 minors which I was kicking myself about for a bit after the test until I could relax and enjoy it.
You really got this on point ☝️. Many instructors here on UA-cam usually don't explain appropriate speed very well, some even mislead the learner drivers. 25-28 for 30, 35-38 for 40, 45-48 for 50, 55-58 for 60 and 65-68 for 70 on a clear day, and on a clear road. Speed will change, and you will need to go a bit slower depending on weather conditions, built up areas or parked vehicles on the road side.
I was watching some of your driving test videos today before my test (which i passed!) and they really helped thank you. You have a very calm and simple way of explaining things compared to my instructor.
Very good advice regarding the appropriate speed. I was getting told to speed up by my instructor but a lot of the time it's about confidence. Maybe do a video on Multi-Lane roundabouts explaining how dots and dashes take you to your appropriate lane and exit.
This has helped me. One of the things I'm worried about is being able to keep up with traffic when I'm nervous. Got my test on Wednesday thanks for your help 👍
I have seen others intructors out there who let their learners drive on roads well below appropriate speeds for the road conditions for sometimes considerable distances and quite often all over the road. Sometimes on 30mph, 40mph or even 50mph roads. It is clear that these pupils are not at a capable level (yet) or confident enough (yet) to drive on such roads. That is poor judgement from the intructors. It's going to make learners more nervous and more likely to panic. It is putting instructor's, pupil's and other road users' safety at risk. It is going to cause loads of drivers to dangerously tailgate or dangerously overtake/undertake. About 18 months ago I was giving a capable learner a lesson on the A20 towards Sidcup. At that point it was 40mph road (dual carriageway). There was a very slow leaner at just under 30mph. Luckily my learner was able to hold back. After the lights at Fiveways we could finally safely pass. That was a stetch of the A20 that goes up to 50mph before the next exit. When we did pass both my learner and I were shocked to see not only was the learner crawling (clutching the wheel with both hands) but the instructor was also holding the steering wheel with one hand to keep the car straight. It is clear that learner was not ready for such a road. My pupil commented how that instructor "threw that pupil in the deep end, sink or swim" and that pupil could not swim. That poor learner must have been petrified. I doubt that instructor would do that on his standards check.
I myself have had learners come to me who were took on a fast road in the first lesson. Not sure why this happens, it does not help the confidence of the pupil.
Why is there so much focus on learners driving below the prescribed limit ? We are bombarded with messages, slogans and campaigns encouraging us all to slow down. Learners seem to be persecuted for something that appears to acceptable for fully licenced, experienced drivers to do. When it is acceptable to travel at 40 / 45 in a 60 and 50 / 55 in a 70, what is so wrong with 20 in a 30 or 30 / 35 in a 50 ? Bear in mind and consider that many vehicles are limited to speeds lower than the national limits.
Great video, Mr T, thanks for your kindness in doing it and posting it. Many instructors don't explain reasonable speeds when they should. For example, just because a dual carriageway is 70, it doesn't mean you can always hit 70. The driver just has to use common sense. There's a dual carriageway near me which is 70 and is reasonably straight, but short, so you can't hit the full 70. It also goes down to 50 as you approach a roundabout. So, drivers just need to use their common sense and study the road and conditions of it and drive accordingly. Thanks again, Mr T for the video. Really useful. Looking forward to your new videos.
@@JamesTravis you're welcome, mate. Thanks for sharing. Been driving six years now and your videos still help. Again, thanks, Mr T for your kindness in making and sharing the videos. Top man.
Thankyou XXX great video ,I did that snail speed earlier when I was learning ,this is brilliant advice as you explain why appropriate speeds are important :-) and thankyou for the mini slip road advice ,there's one on the way to Lound on one of the test routes
What should be the speed limit on humps in a 20 zone? Should we drive over the humps in 20 mph when the road ahead is clear and free of any of obstacles with vehicles behind as well.
Watch this on speed bumps, it will give you a better idea How to approach SPEED BUMPS. What speed and what gear ua-cam.com/video/l8eBJnWoHnY/v-deo.html
I see your block changing gears. I did ask you this question in a previous video. Can you do the same video explaining early gear changing? Most people I've spoken to who are learning to drive are not taught block changing gears. Seems a lot to do-5 to 4 to 3 to 2 to 1 etc and needing 250 yards plus before the stop line to complete this.
Travis. Cool you’re commenting on other you tubers videos. I think I’m going to ooooo slow ( not snail slow but not fast either / smooth ); I’m trying to be nigh on expert for PDi PT2. I think it’s other cars pushing from Behind that will leave me short in space to move lanes safely that could fail Me. I’m slow and nice on roundabouts but need build speed when can. Hmmmmmmmmm.
Im having the opposite problem and find im always aiming for whatever the speed limit is, my intructor just tells me im rushing and i never really got why. Im to fearful of holding people up and failing that way that i end up rushing towards everything ...and failing that way instead
Unfortunately if you are always aiming to get to the maximum speed, you will eventually pass that speed which is dangerous and will fail you the driving test. Be happy with 5mph below the speed limit in good driving conditions.
@@JamesTravis yes ive noticed this, i offen end up going 1-2 mph above the speed limit which isnt the end of the world but it quickly becomes 3-4 mph over and this would be a fail if i didnt notice in good time + i repeat it offen. i have a lesson today ill put what you've said into practise
If you are slowing for a left or right turn into a side road. Then select 2nd gear and cover the brake into the bend and going on the accelerator out of the turn.
