Special thanks to Visit Dean Wye for their information used in my research for this film.
Click here for a map showing the route of the linear walk I was planning to film. My plan was to travel by bus to Minsterworth, walk the route, then pick up the bus again at the end in Westbury. However, due to wet weather on the day of filming, I instead travelled by car to Minsterworth, Strand and Westbury in which to shoot my scenes: explore.osmaps...
"The Solitary Rambler" is my series of amateur films of my journeys in the countryside accompanied by my own musical scores, which I compose and perform on my Yamaha keyboard.
Please note that, as with all the films I make, this is not actually intended to be an extensive guide to the area. This is a mini-movie of my personal journey along the walk, in which I often share some of my own personal stories.

Well done. Patrick...you've made a success out of a very gloomy day! Interesting about the Severn Bore.
Thanks John, glad I managed to get something good out of the wet day 👍
@@solitaryrambler you might want to try arnside , they have what they call the arnside bore, happens quite regularly pat.
@@MrJud62 Never been there but it is on my to-visit list 👍
@@solitaryrambler nice walkin area pat, my daughter lives there, check it out on google…..oh and there’s a couple of pubs too🤣
Lovely film Patrick .. feeling sorry for you when the weather is wet .. We enjoyed it Patrick, Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it Brian and Jenny, thanks as always for watching 👍
You just have to do what you can with the weather Patrick. It's nice to see a church open too. I've never seen the Bore either. Thanks for sharing Patrick, definitely a bit moist.
I tried to make the most of the day Chris despite the rain, so it wasn't all bad really. The Bore is sure worth seeing so I still hope to one day. Thanks Chris for watching and commenting 👍
I love all grade listed churches and other historic building. Thanks for posting, Patrick!
Nice one Richard, thanks for watching 👍
You spotted a gem at Westbury-On-Seven, Patrick, detached towers are unusual, and ones with a spire on top, even more so. It is a broached spire (with the pyramids at it's corners), very interesting, even in a weather-affected walk, you made a lovely film, thanks, Patrick.
I was very surprised at that detached church tower, but what a find indeed! Glad you enjoyed the film Nick as much I did making it despite the weather. Many thanks 👍
I have been watching your videos for awhile and really enjoy them. You have inspired me to plan a vacation to Wye Valley and Forest of Dean. Thank you for sharing your walks.
That's great to hear! Many thanks for your lovely comments and for watching 👍
I enjoyed this walk. It reminds me of a section of The Lambourn Valley way that I did in similar weather.
Pleased you enjoyed it, thanks for watching 👍
What a wonderful river the Severn looks, just love river walks when you can just relax and enjoy nature
Many thanks Harry, the Severn is indeed a great river beside which to wander 👍
another fine piece of videography pat, superbly put together, just ashame about our british weather.
Thanks Ken. Yeah good old British weather can be a bit pants at times 👍
The spire is detached as a safety precaution against the attacks by the Welsh. There are a couple more detached towers in England.
Another interesting walk Patrick despite the weather, glad it didn't stop you though! And you got to go into the church 😊 thankyou and have a good weekend.
Thanks Steph, no I was detemined to get some filming done despite the weather. Have a great weekend too 👍
UK Weather Patrick Rain snow Sun Whatever We Out There Walking Nice One Cheers
Thanks as always for watching and commenting 👍
Sorry did not finish what i was saying ! the other church probably knew you were coming and locked it !!! 🤣 but alas Patrick another great walk , shame about the pub !!!🤭
Yeah I bet they did! 😂 Glad you liked the walk Russ, thanks for watching 👍
Hi Patrick, thank you for another wonderful walk, it was unfortunate that the weather was not very nice for your videoing, we love looking into the old churches, such workmanship goes into them. Hope the weather gets better for you to carry on with your walk's. Take care, regards Dave & Jean.
Hi Dave and Jean, glad you enjoyed the walk. I had to adapt my day due to the weather but it wasn't all bad in the end. The weather did improve thankfull after this day. All the best 👍
Another interesting film. I was lucky enough to see the Severn bore at Minsterworth, with my mum many years ago. What a splendid sight it was.
Glad you found it interesting, many thanks 👍
Lovely video, shame it was wet. But we live in all weathers . Our town has three churches in one graveyard, only two stand today and are joined together by an intersecting passageway, all that remains of the third church are some of the old walls it is said that this church burnt down by an unattended candle. Churches carry so much history. Thank you Patrick. Looking forward to see what you have up your sleeve for the next! ❤️xx
Many thanks Sylvia, pleased you enjoyed the video! 😀 Despite the rain, I made the most of what I could that day, so it wasn't too bad in the end. I love churches because of all their wonderful history. Thanks again and all the best 👍
That didn't look like a nice day to be out but the trimmers did a grand job. I never realized how wide the Severn is in places. I've walked along a tidal river in Preston. It rose ten feet in minutes very dangerous. The church from certain angles still looks connected to the steeple. Its certainly unique. Some lovely villages along the way and you did well filming at all. Hope you got your half. Cheers Patrick
It was a lovely smell of freshly cut grass during the rain. The Severn just widens quickly, so I guess that's how the bore comes along. I didn't realise Westbury church had a detached steeple until I walked right up to it as it looks connected from the main road. I always try to make something out of my filming when the weather isn't so good, so I'm glad I managed to produce a decent video from this. Thanks as always Kelly for watching and commenting 👍
When I stayed at the Severn Bore Inn, It was a high tide, which I saw, with 2 canoes and a couple of surf boards riding the wave. there was also a fridge carried along also. A sight worth seeing. thanks for the film brought back memories.
I'd love to see the bore sometime. Many thanks for watching 👍
I've not been to Minsterworth. pity about the wet weather for you which seems mixed at present. Minsterworth looks a nice place to visit, and what a lovely cliff walk along the river Severn. Your Atmospheric music had an interesting effective piano riff. - We are National Trust members too but they do vary days when open.
Hi Shanita, yes the day was a wet one, but thankfully I managed to get a fairly decent day out of it. Minsterworth is a small place, but great for seeing the Severn Bore when it rises. Thanks for your comments on my music - it's another older piece I've re-recorded for this. Many thanks Shanita and all the best 👍
Well I’ve had some stories in westbury
I went to there primary school
Also the bell tower /horrifying experience
The spiral stairs was a bit worn down and all there was to climb up was a rope
I remember there being 3-4 floors
1. Being a memorial,
2. Empty
3. Empty again but was a short wooden staircase going up from the second
4. The bell room was scary looking up lol
Also down at the river/garden cliff
It was very high up the day u went it’s normally 5-10 feet deeper I also went there the same day I think
When it was down I walked to the other side of the cliff/on the bay
I was planning stay down for a bit but I walked up since it was getting a bit late
As soon as I got back over the wall the tide came in if I didn’t come up I would of been
Stranded or drowned maybe
{just to note for anyone who goes to garden cliff be very careful the tides can come so fast and be careful of the cliff since it’s very unstable sometimes you can hear small stones falling + Becarefull on the top of the cliff since there was a women hanging on to the cliff because she fell.}
And can find some fossils there as well
Anyways have a good day/night
(Also sorry for the poor grammar lol)
Wow a lot of great comments there! 😀 Many thanks for taking the time to watch and for commenting. All the best 👍
Just a pity about the weather, Patrick, but it has still been an interesting video. The church of St. Peter's at Minsterworth is a building of great construction, with lovely architecture both inside and outside. That's very interesting concerning the Severn Bore and the difference in height variation between low and high tides. It is such a fantastic view looking across to the other headland, so wide is the river, at Strand. At Westbury, the St Mary, St Peter and St Paul Church is a most stunning place, with having the tower/spire separate from the main building. Many thanks, Patrick, hope you have better weather for the rest of that week.
Thanks Ffranc, pleased you enjoyed the video. I tried to make the most of the day despite the rain, so it wasn't all bad. The Severn Bore is amazing, I still hope to see it one day. I just love the way the river widens so quickly as you travel downstream. I've never seen a church with its spire detached from the main building before so it was great to see. The weather did improve after that day thankfully 👍
Hi Patrick, thank you for not giving up on the day and allowing us to join you. It definitely looks like a revisit is worth while on another occasion :O)
Thanks Steve. I made the most of the day despite the rain so it wasn't all bad in the end. Thanks as always for watching and commenting 👍
Hello Patrick , nice one some lovely views around the river Severn we used to always go to see the Severn bore at Gloucester just before where the rive split. Another church you might like to go and see with a spire added later to the one side is in Ledbury just at the top of Church Lane right by the old market place . Thank you Patrick.
Thanks as always for watching Shaun. I'll see the Severn Bore one day I'm sure. I've been to Ledbury before now so I remember the church there 👍
You managed to make the most of a rainy day, Patrick - the church with the separate tower was interesting, I've never seen one like that before! Such a shame it was locked, ah well next time maybe?
Thanks Steph. Yes I tried to get the best out of the wet day. That church was amazing. I doesn't look detached when you see it from the road, but once you walk up to it........! 👍😀
Hi Patrick yet another wonderful river walk considering the weather , nice to see you managed to get in that church didn't know you were coming ha !
It was OK Russ despite the moist weather! 😁
It may have been a damp day, but that didn't detract from the scenery. The vegetation is so lush everywhere this year.
Glad you enjoyed it Michael, thanks for watching. Yes I managed to get a decent day despite the weather 👍
Great film Patrick, the Severn is a bonny river for sure.
Thank you Nuinmar 👍
Great video Patrick i always find your content relaxing to watch sat here with a cuppa feet up watching and feeling very relaxed many thanks patrick from one fellow chepstow lad to another cheers ,,,. PS would love to see some videos on trellech and thornbury have you done any on these 2 places ....
Many thanks Jez for the kind words and for watching. If you've been enjoying my content, and have not already done so, I do recommend checking out my Q&A videos as well as the updates on my filming for 2024, which are in the miscellaneous playlist. All the best 👍
@@solitaryrambler I will take a look cheers Patrick
Brings me memories, i was not far from there newham on severn lovley spot to see the river.
Nice one, thanks for watching 👍
Nice video Patrick... You put a lot of effort in by the looks of things. and the music is really magical as always.. You still know how to make a great video..
Thank you very much David, your kind comments are much appreciated. All the best 👍
@@solitaryrambler okay have a nice weekend ! bye
Not just strimmers to contend with but it's blowing a hooley out there too Patrick. Still, the church is a reprieve. I've never seen the bore either. Perhaps one day! The severn is impressive in its latter section. I must walk our neighboring river. Well, a wet one with some delights along the way. I trust you're well out there. Mark
It was a stormy day Mark, but I guess it would be boring if the sun shone everyday 😁 The church was certainly a reprieve, although the rest of the day wasn't too bad in the end bearing in mind what I managed to film. The Severn would be a great one for you to walk one day if you get the chance. All good here anyway thanks Mark. I'm currently away in North Somerset visiting Mum, then Monday I will be in Tintern for the rest of that week - can't wait 😀 I trust all is good with you too Mark. All the best 👍
@@solitaryrambler Yeah, I could see that Patrick - sometimes they make for great walks as you hinted at. Re-the walk, good to hear it turned out alright. Yeah, the Severn. When I get my leg right again I intend to do the Severn/Wye loop Patrick. 400 miles! The road trip sounds great Patrick - all the best for the week. If you want to meet for coffe in Monmouth I'd love to mate. You can tell me about the week and I'll put you in the picture about myself. Well, let us know and I'll email. Peace.
That'll be a great project for you Mark, the 400-mile Severn/Wye loop, great stuff. Coffee in Monmouth? Yeah that would be great Mark. I know I suggested a while back about meeting up in October, but meeting one day next week would work for me actually. Maybe Friday (6th Sept)? That's the day I will be travelling back home afterwards, so that would really suit me, but if you'd prefer another day that should be fine too. I'll have my camcorder with me anyway, so if you're agreeable, it would be great to film you talking a little about your Wye Explorer channel after our coffee? I'll leave that thought with you Mark and hope to catch up with you next week then. All the best 👍
@@solitaryrambler Yeah, another good river adventure Patrick. Friday is good old friend. I'll email - I presume your email is on your channel - you know through that link. You know me always good to talk on camera or off. Take care out there.
I never knew about the Severn bore. I would guess that very solid Ridgeline is probably the cause of the major bend in the river.
A good report keep it up!
Nice one, many thanks for watching 👍
Testing because my last comment was removed
I didn't remove it John so don't know what happened there. I've seen this one ok though 👍
@@solitaryrambler I sent a to this about midday 24th. It was I thought innocuous. Did you receive it?
@@johntimbrell I didn't receive any other comment John before your "testing because my last comment was removed", so I know nothing about it.
@@solitaryrambler I mentioned heritage open days. I'll see if this gets through.
