This is a fabulous and terribly underrated symphony. Brilliantly constructed and orchestrated (the counterpoint is exquisite throughout). Great performance here.

Energetic performance of this powerful and largely unknown symphony. Nielsen is seriously underrated.

What a wonderful performance - It breaks my heart to watch it performed in a hall that is not even half full. Glad that the internet could at least spread it out to thousands of people, so it could get the appreciation, that it deserves.

Sinfónica de Galicia - the finest orchestra in Spain? I would imagine so going by this performance.

Thank you for this. As other poster says, it doesn't get performed enough, so this is a treat.

The first symphony of Nielsen was written in full musical romantic period. Nothing could do that it could sound else, and nevertheless, the personality of Nielsen appears up to the very first measures of the "Allegro orglioso", an odd notation. This will be the signature of the whole symphony. Nielsen enters the world of the symphony with an original and personal score.More technically, we can hear how he uses trumpets, horns and trombones to gives this "orglioso" feeling; They are compensated in the treble by the use of three flutes. All the movements - even the slow one - are fierce. This mood of Nielsen is surely a deep feature of his character. We will find it more or less in all his scores.

WQhat is t he Italian word "orgoglioso" supposed to mean anyway? It almost sounds like the word "orgasm". Someone tell me if I'm wrong.

Yes there is no question that virtually from the opening bars this is an original sound/orchestration which of course from our knowledge can only be a work by Carl Nielsen. I'm so pleased that at long last he is being recognised beyond his home country as one the great symphonic composers of the late 19th/early 20th century. Absolutely one of my favourite composers.

No hay nada de gente en el público, que lastima entonces. Aquí en Morelia hay filas enormes cada concierto semanal de las orquestas (que no tienen tal calidad como esta orquesta Galicia), que tristeza ver que no tengan un lleno total.

The First is Nielsen's nautical symphony, you can hear it in every bar. So no surprise that the Galicians can play it.

I don't know how to quantify it, but there is something Nielsenesque about each of Nielsen's symphonies.

This is my favorite of Nielsen's 6 symohonies. One reason his symphonies may not be popular,,
all of which are of interest, is his abhorrent concertos. One critic even said that Nielson knew the clarinet so well that he avoided all the good notes. Those concertos perhaps may have initiated a death-knell for any popularity of Nielsen's music. Even in the opening movement of this 1st symphony the main theme keeps reappearing with so little alternation that other's comparison of Nielsen with Beethoven is exaggerated. Witness Beethoven's ever-varied transformation of the Diabelli waltz in his piano variations, Op.120. Richarc Sot on Facebook & Messenger.

A: Variation in almost any set of variations is larger than in almost any other kind of musical movement/composition.
B: Your very argument could also be held against the opening movement of Beethoven's 5th symphony, to give just one example.
C: Every composer in history has had critics saying stupid things about their work.
