I used to dispatch the 1-11’s from Manchester on the shuttle to Gatwick. I think it departed around 0700. The friendliest, most professional and best dressed crews ever, I always came away smiling, then back to the office for breakfast with the familiar sound of those Spey engines spooling up in the background. Happy days.
Good old days. Worked at STN as a lad around 1991, The Dan-Air, Britannia, Air UK, Airtours, FR, Monarch crews were such friendly, nice people. The airport was like a family. Admittedly, the new Terminal was empty back then, rows and rows of unused brand new check-in desks. It was actually are really calming place to be. Changed a bit these days. Remember dispatching Ryanair clapped out BAC 1-11s - before it’s low-cost change. Can you believe Ryanair had business class then! Their Irish crews were sometimes a bit naughty, but so warm and funny.

I am pleased to say we have identified most of the British Caledonian staff who appear in the video clip. There is:- Captain John Belcher, First Officer Tim Davis, Flight Engineer Jim Stevens, Flight Purser Russ Gowen, Ground Engineer / Headset Man / refuelling Mick Miles, Tug / push back crew Terry Jeffries, John Hook and driver Harry Fagence. With thanks to all the former staff who helped with the names at www.british-caledonian.com
I remember when I was a little boy in Houston, and they started flying into my city long before BA. Never had the chance to fly with them though.
I miss BCAL ❤️
December 1983 Brussels to Gatwick on a DC10. :)
I used to clean these in BCAL Hangar 5 at LGW in summer of '85.
Those were the days, proper airlines, proper smokey engined planes and tons of legroom
I used to be in the lion club and go in the cockpit on over night flights. Beautiful aircraft and everyone at b cal were wonderful. I miss them days. Especially at 25000 feet.
I didn't know that Gatwick had a double airbridge back in those days. Why did they get rid of it? was it because the North Terminal opened?
I remember seeing these aircraft at San Juan in the eighties
Sexy aircraft, sexy livery.
