my mentor when I started working in anti-poaching in South Africa was a black Rhodesian, he fought for the Rhodesian government, after his whole family was slaughtered by the communist guerrillas. Meeting him gave me a whole new perspective on that conflict.
In Rhodesia the blacks, (the Shona, Matabele, Venda etc) were not usually referred to as Rhodesians, and neither were the Asians and Coloureds (people of mixed race.) That being said the Selous Scouts relied heavily on (Black) Africans to accomplish their objectives. In the long run, the government was unable to garner International support due to various factors that I will not pretend to be an expert on.

Liberty or Death South Africa have far more support to Rhodesia than Israel and they have much more than ammo and petrol. SA soldiers got stationed in Rhodesia to protect the railway network that went to SA on which was vital for supplies and I have no doubt they also had active soldiers also. SA provided most of Rhodesia SLRs never mind ammo. Portuguese couldn’t help the Rhodesians for long as they lost their colonies quicker than Rhodesia falling but when they still were in Mozambique and Angola they did keep Rhodesia flanks secure.

Liberty or Death Israel never took part in the sanctions in Rhodesia they had full right to allow the lease of Israeli arms. South Africa had helped Rhodesia on a much larger scale whether you like to admit that or not. @Frank Mcallister It wasn't the UK who did that, it was useless leftist politicians in the UK. Many people in Britain supported the Rhodesian cause, but they were ignored.
To the best of my knowledge, the Rhodies were the best counter-insurgency troops to ever shit between a pair of combat boots. For the entirety of the war, they maintained a 25 to 1 kill ratio against the terrs. That ratio was spread through the entire force, it included the standard-issue Rhodesian Grunt, not just the kill rations that the SpecOp guys like the RLI, SAS, and Selous Scouts attained. When I was in the service, we used to get PME (Professional Military Education) classes on a regular basis. These were presentations conducted by Officers or Staff NCOs, they'd cover a war, campaign, battle, or even a Military leader in history, and how lessons learned from them could be applied to current times. They were usually pretty constructive. More than once, the Rhodesian Bush War was the topic of discussion, the point being made was that this was an example of what a well-dressed counter-insurgency campaign should look like. I have had the honor to know two of the men that fought in that war. One was my Sensei several years ago, he was a former Marine who was one of the foreign volunteers that fought for Rhodesia. The other was a guy who'd been born and raised there, but now lives in Australia. As with a lot of "wars of liberation" in the modern age, they didn't lose the war on the battlefield. Politics and betrayal defeated them, the traitors in the west took the guards off the gates, opened the gates and let the barbarians in.
The rhodesian security forces suffer a manpower shortage. Conscription of whites and volunteer coloureds isn't filling the requirements of the army. They seem to have an ongoing debate on how much mobilization is required.
If kill ratio had decided wars, things would have looked a lot different through history. Kill ratio is what you fall back on when you can't win the strategic objective or even figure out what the strategic objective is.

Another friend served with your Air Force and yet another was in the Rhodesian SAS and then The Selous Scouts. Speaking to them, and having read a few books on the Rhodesian military, you guys were a force to be reckoned with. It is so sad that your nation was stabbed in the back, especially by Brit politicians. It simply is unbelievable as to what your country has become, while The West has stood by and allowed it to happen. But you can be proud of your achievements as a nation, and that despite all of the sanctions placed on your country, your Armed Forces were not defeated in theatre. Best wishes to you.
Gordon Patterson aka Jock a Scotsman and ex British Paras, served in 2 Commando RLI during the mid 1970's. A finer man and soldier you couldn't meet. 'Jock' Hutton RIP also served with distinction from the 1960's until the late 1970's as an RSM. Much loved by all Rhodesians, including those who never met him, such was his renown as a professional soldier. Many British, Australian, New Zealand, Canadian, American, South African military men fought the with us against the communists in all of our units. Some even paid with their lives. The Rhodesians consider all these fine men as brothers, regardless of where they may be today.
It looks like the rhodesian security forces suffer a manpower shortage running up through the 70's. Local conscription and recruitment is not meeting the demands of the security forces. Payment for foreigners increase a bit through the war, I think.
Rhodesians never died.😉 They and their abomination of a country now reside forever in Hell (or whatever eternal damnation you believe in or not) piss-broiling in the suffering they created - overseen by Lucifer, their master himself. May they and all those who practice the twisted ideology of white supremacy be destroyed! May they weep and gnash their teeth, kneeling in the ashes of their hopes and dreams. May the memories of their demonic ancestors be erased forever - may their "achievements" be forgotten, given over to others. May their children betray them, and may their lands, possessions, mothers, sisters, and daughters be given over to their enemies. May their flesh be devoured by maggots - no bird of the air or beast of the field should be forced to eat such filth - and may their rotten spirits know no peace. May the LORD God turn His face from them, so that they know forever the consequence of their actions, and despair. May those they thought below them be given the power to bring them down and crush them, as the LORD God gave them the power to crush "Rhodesia", and may they trod upon them - may they be trodden into the dirt. May they find no safe harbour, and may they, their ideologies, and their works be brought to ruin. So shall it be. 💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿
I don't know why more rhodesians didn't serve in the security forces. They run some kind of soft conscription for whites with coloured volunteers. At some point they start to recruit ex-rebels.
@@SusCalvin Because you can have all the manpower in the world and it still wouldn't matter if you don't have the guns and ammo to equip them. Also if you just start running around and conscripting people you might leave gaps in a rather fragile economy. Lastly conscripting white farms is pretty much pulling someone who was already a trained reservist off of their farm (the conflict zone) to bring to a boot camp then ultimately bring them back to their farm but this time in super short shorts.
@@SimplySinify That's the limit you hit with all manpower. The people who fight in the army are also not doing normal jobs in the civilian economy. It's the eternal guns vs butter question. And with conscription and without, you can't avoid it. You hit the same with professional troops, except you take them out permanently from the civilian economy. Keeping a large permanent force around is also costly. Mercenaries could be used to avoid that. Like with migrant workers, you can pay cash to have temporary manpower around. That's what the Bush War turns into later on. They start to avoid large engagements and it becomes an awful, bitter conflict. The government forces aren't just the cool special forces, it's all the home guard and police used in a paramilitary role as security units. Someone has to do the grunt work of manning roadblocks, limiting movement and containing villages. Not everyone is going to be the tip-of-the-spear guys. A lot of the volunteers/mercenaries they bring on get assignments in that sort of security role. There is a transition government who starts receiving more material and keeps up the fight. But the anti-government forces also ramps up their material power and manpower at that time. 60's Rhodesia keeps underestimating the anti-government forces and how much mobilization is necessary. On the other side of the world, they manage to keep South Vietnam up after the US evacuation with the use of military aid and try to make vietnamization work.
Those dudes were the pioneers of modern Coin warfare . They left their mark. Respect to those K-Car and G-Car crews who worked with those fire-force teams.
Helicopters are the rad new technology being introduced in the 60's. You can bypass lack of infrastructure. If you have only small arms, it's hard to down a helicopter. Eventually man-portable systems that can kill a helicopter reliably gets introduced, and people start to experiment on when a helicopter is most weak. A lot of COIN warfare is still security troops. It's not all helicopters, raids and glory. You need police units and militia that sits and holds ground. A reaction force helps that a bit. Manpower is something Rhodesia starts to struggle with. They keep running some sort of system for soft conscription of whites and volunteer service for coloureds. Payment for foreigners is bumped up.

Not enough local manpower could be conscripted or mustered to meet the growing demands of the security forces. They run some sort of mix between soft conscription of whites and volunteer coloureds. Pay increases for foreigners through the conflict.

I went into the Rhodesian Army in April 1967 when I was 17 years old and finished my time in May 2000 when it became Zimbabwe The Selous Scouts commander was Lt Col Ron Reid Daly and I knew him personally and may of the Scouts were my friends .Some still to this day we communicate with each other. This was the best unit in our Army and there were only 100 who got to wear this badge. The training was unbelievably tough to join and only the best of the best managed to pass. They were taught many skills used in our Bush War and operated mostly alone behind enemy lines causing much destruction . I have many stories to share of their accomplishments and their heroism .They killed 1000s of terrorists with minimum casualties of their own. The SEAL teams in USA Military could be compared to the Scouts in terms of training and missions. The SAS C Squadron in Rhodesian Army was also used in many operations against the Terrorists We fought 2 groups one backed by Russia using the AK47 and one backed by China using the SKS.We had the SLR in the beginning of the war then were issued the FN 7.62 x 51 very accurate and effective automatic rifle with magazines of 20 rounds . Our war was mostly close combat and in the Rhodesian war. Camouflage training was used to our advantage. We never had helmets or body armor and only wore a camo shirt ,trousers and cap. Our boots were Veldskoens and of course we had a backpack on missions into the bush primarily for carrying rations a poncho and oc course we had several bandoliers of ammo plus 4 magazines ready in case of a terrorist contact. We used the French Alouette helicopter for dropping troops into a firefight with the terrs .I had been in these choppers many times and had room for the Pilot who was the only one who had a door on the chopper. The machine gunner was also the Tech and sat on the left side with one revolving seat in the front .the back seat was just a bench and room for 4 personnel. One of my buddies was blown out the chopper one day when we were heading back to base and fortunately he was holding to the one strat on the roof and I grabbed him and brought him into the chopper. He thought it was his last day and all he could say for the next 4 weeks of that op was “FUCK ME” hilarious I will share many stories if you like and if you have any particular interest let me know. One of the Scouts I know has been training your guys in the art of bush warfare to assist your training. We only had 10000 men total in our Army and was divided into 4 brigades I did my training and was in Depot Royal Rhodesian Regiment C Company 8 Platoon .We gave up being loyal to the crown and declared UDI in 1965 then it was Depot Rhodesian Regiment. I was selected for the Rhodesian Corps of Signals and passed all my courses and tests and was attached to all the JOCS in most of the anti terror operations .I was mainly in the North and West parts of the operations. We had a lot of Brit instructors who fought in Malaysia, Palestine, Korea and wherever Britain was involved in any theater. . Good instructors but ruthless and hard men which was why we were so good I guess as discipline was paramount. . By the way the first day we arrived at our barracks the RSM lined us up and informed us that if anyone disobeyed an officers command he was authorized to execute us on the spot. Imagine this today? ^ of us would take on 50 terrorists and win as we feared our officers more than the enemy lol Take care brother and wish you all the best in your career. Remember camaraderie is so important .If you cannot rely on the man next to you and him on you in a war it will be disastrous. The men who stood by our side whether White, Black Brown or Green were 100% reliable and had each others back. Good time are always had in the canteen after duty and downing at least 6 beers. My pay was $1 a day but beers were $0.15c and a pack of cigarettes $0.20 so with free food free medical free lodging and free clothing our pay was rapidly dissolved in the Canteen.

How stable does a country become when a single tribe holds all the offices, all the wealth and just makes sure no one else can have it.
@DB Cooper There's a lot of foreign involvement in Africa at the time. It's one of the more forgotten sites for proxy wars between Moscow-supported and US-supported actors. Neither is particularly interested in the well-being of the locals. Neither was London, Madrid and the other colonial rulers. There's often a bit of chafing between the whites who manage the local matters and the whites back in the homeland. Large wars always fuck up countries. The european powers are still reeling from WW II at the time, and losing their grip on their colonial spheres of interest. The ability and interest to wage war overseas is pretty depleted even if a few of them try. South Africa used to have a liberal white government on board with the UK plan for democratization. The Ian Smith government replaces them with the promise to halt democratization and can't imagine any way out of the escalating civil war. Plenty of the actors here don't think they can reach any compromise on the matter. The Smith government gets pulled into compromises on the matter only when the war spreads. Things like coloured conscription is suddenly more feasible.
As British ex pat living in Africa my whole life and in Salisbury...salute every RLI soldier and the other units of the Rhodesia armed forces...we were all deceived and continue to be deceived by the British government...Rest in Peace those who made the ultimate sacrifice..God bless you all.❤
All of them are in suits in the beginning. Pure professionals, every last one of them. You don't see class like that anymore. God 'broke the mold' when he made those men among men.
The rhodesian security forces start to suffer a manpower shortage. Soft conscription of whites and coloured volunteers is not filling the needs of the armed forces. Security troops are the unsung heroes of this kind of conflict. It's not all raids and glory, you need third-line units to hold ground.
Ian Smith and co decided to push for independence from the UK in '65, and things didn't work out. A lot of white settlers in the colonies find that they don't really like how this lot of having to obey London or Madrid, or some landowner back in France, is working out. Then you got to settle for what's most important. Keeping your independence or making sure the non-whites stay out of parliament. Everyone's gotta have their priorities.

The story of the post-war 20th Century was indigenous peoples throwing off colonial rule and gaining self-governance. The story of the 21st appears to be those people's kids and grandkids desperately trying to get to countries governed by the former colonial powers...
A lot of the white settlers in the colonies chafed at being ruled from overseas. A lot of the local whites in places like Haiti, Bolivia, South Africa etc weren't very keen on being ruled from Paris or London. If you showed up to tell some boer settlers that British rule was going to be the best they could have. The french monetary union in place right now is mostly about taking bags of money out of Africa and into the central bank in France. It's a pretty sketchy deal.

A lot of COIN warfare is still security troops. It's not all helicopters, raids and glory. You need police units and militia that sits and holds ground. A reaction force helps that a bit. @@concars1234 western countries don't teach about it and similar conflicts that occured in the last 50 years likely due to the dirty deeds that transpired. The more I look at the Ian Smith government, the more it looks just like any other african tribal oligarchy. We have our ethnic group holding all the offices and all the wealth, and the primary function of the government is to make sure the other tribes don't get their hands on that.

A brave and patriotic people betrayed by venal and deceitful Western politicians, specifically British, who advanced a Communist terrorist solution and wanted Robert Mugabe to be the dictator of Zimbabwe. The result was horrific for both the white and black population of a once beautiful country.
It's their fault for colonizing. Africa isn't the responsibility of the Europeans.
And the ecology. the unnaturally burgeoning population via Rhodesian western agricultural techniques and farms had created so many people desperate for food in the aftermath of Zimbabwe’s economic collapse, and that liked to hunt, that even nature preserves were turned into year-round hunting grounds for hordes in the millions.
Little is forcing the Smith government to become a rebel colony.
@bLackstar maybe you are misunderstood. Ian Smith has no Problems with Blacks. He has problems with commies. especially mugabe. There were many socialist black leaders out there, who though have a dislike for colonization , payed serious attention to Smith's words. and were far far more moderate and open minded than commies.

I went into the Rhodesian Army in April 1967 when I was 17 years old and finished my time in May 2000 when it became Zimbabwe
The Selous Scouts commander was Lt Col Ron Reid Daly and I knew him personally and may of the Scouts were my friends .Some still to this day we communicate with each other.
The SAS C Squadron in Rhodesian Army was also used in many operations against the Terrorists
We fought 2 groups one backed by Russia using the AK47 and one backed by China using the SKS.We had the SLR in the beginning of the war then were issued the FN 7.62 x 51 very accurate and effective automatic rifle with magazines of 20 rounds . He thought it was his last day and all he could say for the next 4 weeks of that op was “FUCK ME” hilarious
I will share many stories if you like and if you have any particular interest let me know. One of the Scouts I know has been training your guys in the art of bush warfare to assist your training.
We only had 10000 men total in our Army and was divided into 4 brigades
I did my training and was in Depot Royal Rhodesian Regiment C Company 8 Platoon .We gave up being loyal to the crown and declared UDI in 1965 then it was Depot Rhodesian Regiment.
^ of us would take on 50 terrorists and win as we feared our officers more than the enemy lol
Take care brother and wish you all the best in your career.
Great Life . More to follow let m know if you get this

Poetry Of A Rhodesian War
(Copyright 2011 by Bill Moylan)
Today’s elder generation, lower their eyes in shame, and dare not, mention her name, Rhodesia.
Achilles would not have walked alone, among these brave son’s of Rhodesia, nor would Achilles let them.
As Sparta was to ancient Greece, so, Rhodesia will be, anciently, to future generations.
Her name will live forever,
Poets will write poetry of her lovers.
Writers will write of her son’s bravery,
Stories will be passed down, through generations, throughout the earth.
Will, in disbelief, ask the question.
Where is Rhodesia, left bare, alone, forsaken by all.
They mention not her name,
Oh Rhodesia, my home.
So, when you, Oh son’s and daughter’s of Rhodesian fame,
In your new lands, Hold your head high.
Far from your home,
Tell your son’s and daughter’s the meaning of their name.
Pass it on, Pass it on, from one to another, so, we will, go home, again

The government of Ian Smith looks a lot like any other unstable african oligarchy. My ethnic group and my tribe is gonna have the power and we're going to kick any other ethnic group that wants it.
