His credit is already shot. Turn the Tesla in and file for bankruptcy. Dude has already got a really good work ethic, so just keep hustling and learn from the mistakes. The interest on this debt alone is probably $2,000 per month. So, if he could somehow send them $3,000 per month it would still take 10+ years to get out of debt. You can yes… you can drop out of school and make it big.
      But its just rare.
There is a reason these kinds of cycles are stereotyped and exist.
To break out of it is incredibly hard, and sometimes you really dont know better.
The Socrates Cave analogy is a good one.
If all you know to exist in the world is shadows on a cave wall, then you know nothing of the outside world.
To do better than your parents, you have to know better, and someone typically has to teach you that, combined with a willingness to self improve.

And then the Great Recession happened only a few years later. So yeah, I wish someone had better explained it to me earlier in life. Having a good entry and exit strategy will make you succeed in the stock market.

Why not keep the car? Make it an exemption. It has no equity currently as an asset.
Why do you feel he won't be able to keep the car?

    1. He is a felon. What was the charge?
    2. The women he was trying to impress is not the problem. He was acting rich trying to be someone he is not before he met her.
    3. Bad choices got him here. Hopefully he can become more self aware.

  • @JreiZz

Filing bankruptcy will take it all away, but it doesn’t mean he will learn. I filed and was discharged in March 2024. Already got credit card offers 2 months later, unsecured. The point is he needs to work like a dog and in his free time spend it with his daughter if he files. He needs to focus on his obligations and not date/ marry for a while.

Work that debt snow ball. Force yourself to listen to the Ramsey show podcast. This stuff relieves the steam valve of pressure that you and I are not the only ones who have messed up financially.

Found out I had a $230 debt I completely forgot about. Paid it right away. Got the "thanks for your payment " email, but they didn't debit the money for 5 days. Was sleeping 3 and 4 hours night worrying about it.
I think he should file bankruptcy.
