  • Bought a working Philips CD-104 from Ebay but it has problems. Fixed output problem by replacing output relay. Also CDM1 needs calibration because was unable to read CDs past track 4. Needs Griplets sorting and will mod with Delatronics NOS reclock kit.

This fault Is quite common in this player (and its similar derived models), I suggest to modify slightly the reed's coil drive logic so common, better quality relays (a single double way relay) can be used on the outputs with contacts shorting to ground the output signal when muting is activated during turning on sequence or between tracks skipping etc. With relay contacts shorting the outputs to ground the signal integrity is way better because reed relays contacts are no longer connected in series with the original signal path. Just a pair additional 100 ohm resistors on outputs can help to avoid overloading opamps outputs due to temporary shorting to ground during muting sequences or requests.

Got one of these sitting in my office at the moment. Came from a deceased relatives Hi-Fi during the house clearance and I flagged it as not to be skipped. But now I'm stuck with it. First thing is going to be a new belt for the drawer as it doesn't open. Then see how it performs. From what I can see it's 14 bit with dithering to get to 16 bit and I'm not keen on the permanently connected phono cables.

@@chinnyvision It is 14 bit (and was always designed to be until Sony got there first with the 16 bit CDP101), the 104 uses 14 bit oversampling.
