  • TULIP FAQ PART 2
Can you reuse your tulip bulbs? Nope. If you want to get more than 1 tulip out of your bulb, the best way is to just leave them in the ground and just enjoy the flowers in your garden. DO NOT CUT FROM THEM. the bulb needs all the energy from the leaves and they have to die off naturally for the bulb to be able to grow another flower the next year. As flower farmers we treat tulips as annuals and a one and done. One of the reasons locally grown tulips can be pricey. Do you have any more questions on growing tulips? Let me know in the comments and I’ll do my best to answer them.

You can keep that tulip with bulb attached upright in a cardboard box in a dry airy location. Check for mould and rotting. Do this in May. By August you can then store them after removing the dead leaves. So yes you can. And even if they are tiny they will grow but will flower in year 3 not the following year.

That’s not really true. They can still be cut above the leaves if the stem is long enough and the bulb will grow back fine the next year. My mom does it every year and hers grow back beautifully. Some varieties aren’t as resilient though, and sometimes only the leaves will grow back the next year. It really depends, but saying they won’t grow back at all isn’t true and lots of people do it.

If you watch till the end that’s exactly what I said. My mom leaves them in the ground and they have bloomed for years. This was a 1 min video. There isn’t enough time to give every option. This was just a quick bit of info.

"But she also doesn't cut her tulips" is what you said at the end. she's literally saying you can cut them and they with still flower every year.

Growing for bulbs is a total growing for bulbs is a totally different farming game. This info doesn’t apply to that.

So we just leave the bulbs in the ground while keeping the leaves and flower? Do the leaves and flower just rot in the winter then? What happens when the flower a and leaves turn brown and die? We just keep the flower and leaves? I dont get it.

What about dead heading? I keep seeing to just cut the first inch or 2 off after the flowers have fallen. Is that accurate? Thanks for your guidance

I bought tulips in a pot from the grocery store, they are wilting and the petals are falling off. How would you suggest that I save them for next year?

You can either plant them outside so they'll come back next year or just keep the bulb in a room temp, dry location to replant next year.
Deadhead the flower when they're done, then let the bulb keep getting nutrients from the leaves until those die too.

Valentines (potted) tulips from Target Feb 2023.
We enjoyed them on our dining table.
      They wilted
      I stopped watering them
I cut them down to the top of the soil They are currently into one week of growth through soil (same pot indoors). Jan 2024

Wait for all the leaves to be fully dead and crunch and then plant in the yard. Not sure if it will work. I’ve never done this specific experiment but I think it would be better than trying to store the bulbs especially if you aren’t familiar with that

There could be so many reasons why. I’d need more info. When did you plant were they chilled what zone are you in did they get enough water or sun? So many variables. If you want to try them again next year, I would not cut any of the leaves off and then once they are fully dead and crispy I’d plant them in the garden. It may not work but you can try.

Let your tulip bulbs mature and grow in the ground. Be patient. Never cut till 3rd season and every tulip will be cutable.

@@RobertNorman-e2p when farming tulips we don’t have that luxury. At least I do not with the amount of space I have. Even large scale farmers do it this way. It’s not the only way. Just a very common way.
