What you guys said about the other shop saying the trans was bad is exactly why I prefer to do my own research and auto work. Too many shops out don't have a clue what they're doing. Good vid guys.
Constant Velocity Transmission???? Don't you mean Continuously Variable Transmission? Pretty good video though, thanks for sharing it. Definitely picked up some good tips and pointers on how to diagnose lean conditions. I'm gonna have to get me one of those smoke generators one of these days. Thanks again!
You are right. you can use brake or carb clean while watching fuel trims. If you have a vacuum leak fuel trims should lower when you are at the vacuum leak. Thanks Michael and Aaron
you have to use a scan tool to watch the vehicle data to see fuel trim. Fuel trim is a calculated value from the PCM, not raw data you can use an oscope to see. Thanks Michael and Aaron
Where did you put smoke in the engine? In intake manifold? You used an adapter to acomodate the intake manifold diameter to the smoke machine output? I didn't see very well the action. The presentation is too quickly.
I do not like pc based scopes. What we use is a snap on scope. Now they are pricey, but they work and work well. Fluke makes a 2 Chanel scope for around $1000 i believe, and there are a couple of other brands that make affordable scopes. I have had no luck with pc based lab scopes. Good luck and thanks for the question. Michael
Fantastic video! I appreciated the in-depth discussion of fuel trim. For those of us who don't have access to a smoke machine, what do you think about watching the fuel trim while spraying carb or brake cleaner around the intake?
Hi, good thing you are doung P0171.....good job by the way.. Question? i got a 2006 toyota corola, and just came the check engine last week, so what you thing i can do first? to resolve the problem, i know is a leaking right... but i coudn't see it where did you put the hose to check the smoke? thank you!
Yeah i have a problem with my 94 yukon i think my oil pressure sender is going bad because when i start my truck its in the middle and then when I'm driving it doesn't stay in the middle only when i accelerate it goes to the middle at 40 pci .Please can you help me with this problem. ?
I want to get a semi-pro or pro scope like that as I am thinking of opening a shop soon. I have been restoring cars and working on side, but this sort of advanced work is right up my alley as a pretty tech savvy guy. What sort would run on a PC or dedicated device? I have used Torque app and scanners.
great video i was wondering if smoke should come out through the egr valve when smoking with the machine cause having trouble finding the problem of the lean codes on my explorer
Thank you for the video! I have a 171 and a 174 error code. Apparently the engine is running too lean. Ford told me it was the mass air flow sensor as well as the throttle body. They want $900 to fix it. So I went down to NAPA Auto Parts, picked up a mass air flow sensor for $75 and fix that in a matter of minutes. My check engine light is still on, just wondering if you have any further advice for me. Ford said there was no air leaks and that the codes they got were to repair the mass airflow sensor and throttle body. But when I look up symptoms of people who need to replace their throttle body they are things like hey bad idle whether it be too high or too low lack of power and so forth. I have none of that. My vehicle runs practically perfect other than a check engine light. I have a 2007 Ford Expedition, any advice would be had. Thank you very much.
Thank you for your comment. Sounds like the fuel trims need to be checked to get a better idea of whats actually happening. I'm sorry I cant give you more advice, unfortunately Micheal past away a few weeks ago and the diagnostics was his specialty. Keep me posted on your findings though. Aaron
AutoEclinic whoah...we get good guys in there who seem to know what they are doing and communicate well and in the blink of an eye they are gone...I too am sorry for your loss
Too late to help with your problem. Build a smoke machine for about $30. Check for vacuum leaks. Throttle Body bushing leaks can be detected with smoke. Low fuel pressures can cause these codes. But KISS. My money is on a vacuum leak.
first off, very helpful!! but I have an issue with a 5.4 f150 with high calculated load at idle.. where do I start its not the first f150 with theseprobs at my shop but I want to figure this out please help
My 04 Mercury Monterey 4.2L also have these two codes, the FTST si 7.031 on bank 1 and 12.5 on bank 2, but FTLT for both bank 1 and bank 2 are 25% even after I ram the RPM to 2500 it stay at 25%, the problem must be worst then I thought.
just had my head gasket changed and shortly after engine light came on, so I took it back and now it's throwing both of those codes, I would like to hope it's not the head gasket since they just replaced that and put in a used air intake. so not sure where I should go from here.
I usually don't comment on such videos , but I would hate to see anyone misled . The EGR would not have caused a lack of power. The fuel trims on the test drive from what I can make out from the camera phone video, would be too low under acceleration. That would lead to a mass air flow sensor type of diagnosis. All EGR and throttle shafts will show a small leak under a smoke machine. Perhaps a follow up video with a customer verifying the repair would be in order.
If it had a bad EGR valve that caused a vacuum leak therefore making the CEL pop up as well as putting the car in a limp/safe run mode....then I'm pretty sure it would have less power. Also, gotta kinda call BS on you saying all EGR and throttle shafts would show a small leak under a smoke machine....unless by small leak you mean microscopic and negligible....which is not what we saw here.
1 have a 2003 ford taurus when starting runs up high about aminute or so goes down runes good then takes forever to go down engine came on thay think its runnig lean on bank 2 help
can you help me out , i have a 1999 ford crown vic and i has a p0174 code can you tell me how muck it should cost o fix so i don' get rip off and what should be the problem
Hello there, i have a 2000 Ford E150 van And it keeps showing a P0174 error code on it. I keep taking it to shop after shop and nobody seems to know what the problem is. What i have replaced on it myself are the following. MAS sensor, fuel filter, Air filter, 02 Sensors ALOT of times. Is there any idea what could be the problem with my van? It runs great and has been running great and no check engine light either until i came back from the auto shop i let them look at it because it was idling kinda rough when i would stop and a stop light only.
I found 2 hoses that were disconnected on the air breather hose to mass air flow sensor. someone must have forgotten to hook them back up after replacing the air filter...ugh!
We have a 2005 Ford Mustang and the light came on I got some codes but I don't know what they mean just wondering if you could help me out here and tell me what they mean first code is p0316 second code po765 3rd code is po171 70 if you could tell me what they mean I would greatly appreciate it thank you gentlemen have a good day
great video! I have a 2002 vw jetta turbo, and took it to goodyear and they mention I need to replace a "Hose to Snorkel" what is that? they said i have to get it from the dealer. or were this part located at... the code coming up is P0171 Lean Bank 1
Thank Brian! They are probably talking the hose between the mass airflow to the throttle body. You could have air sneaking in past the mass airflow sensor and the computer does not compensate. Therefore it does not add extra fuel resulting in a lean air to fuel mixture.
thanks guys preciate the help I have the same issue on my BMW x5 with lean code on both Bank 1 and bank 2 and by the way nice I definitely don't have a lot of paper toilet so I'll definitely won't go to Taco Bell. my question is the following I don't know where to start I replace so many things recording this I did a vacuum test leak and nothing I also did a fuel pressure and for some reason to pressure regulator keep going up and down rapidly I don't know what's that about
Hey fella's while the graphs are all really cool and technical looking the many different ways explaining Lean are really NOT necessary Yes OK We get it you found the leak very cool .. all that other shit is information they DO NOT WANT OR NEED ... But it sure make's you two guy's look like a couple of Rocket scientists . ....
hi I would like if you can do a review of OBDII Bluetooth/wireless scanner sold on eBay that seems cheap and useful compare to those that are expensive on the market. this is a good video and handy for those newbie technicians
Thank you for your question but due to the passing of Michael we do not answer questions anymore. We thank you for watching but apologize for the inconvenience.
hi, can you pliz help i have my c230 v6 2007 and it runs so smooth but it is showing the check engine light and i checked it and it gave me this code. i cleared the error but it comes out after a 5 to 10 kilometers of drive Self-adaptation of mixture formation for enrichment at partial load for the left cylinder bank is above the permissible limit. (P0174) Self-adaptation of mixture formation for enrichment at partial load for the right cylinder bank is above the permissible limit. (P0171

I have a 2006 Ford Taurus, 6 cylinder car, my engine light, (idiot light), I went and had it tested about 2 weeks ago at Advance Auto, they said at that time I needed a tune up that my car was misfiring, I had already done an oil change a few days earlier, so I bought an air filter, and spark plugs, and wires and my son n law put those in. Fast forward to today, (yesterday, Monday, I was in the Publix parking lot and my car started acting funny, sputtering, so I drove around the corner to Kauffman tire, and hour later they looked at my car and said that 1 of the spark plugs had popped out and 2 were loose, they fixed it, but said they couldn't look at the other 3 under the pelium, that it may be fine now but without taking if off they are not sure,) so now I don't know if I need to worry about the other 3 spark plugs or not? I am freaking out, I am disabled and I need a safe car, anyway, today I went back to advanced because the Engine Light is still on in my car, TODAY it read codes P0171 and P0174, I just watched your video on these codes so I see it could be lots of things, I don't know what to do, I don't want to get ripped off at a car place; so I need your help please! My po 171 code was caused by a dirty mass air flow sensor. Cleaned it and runs perfect no more issues
CVT is not a "Constant Velocity Transmission" as stated in the video. It's a "Continously Variable Transmission"
What you guys said about the other shop saying the trans was bad is exactly why I prefer to do my own research and auto work. Too many shops out don't have a clue what they're doing. Good vid guys.
That's one of our main purpose, diagnostics. You always want to justify the repair with data rather than just throwing darts.

Excellent presentation. You gentleman are professional, knowledgeable, and courteous. Keep up the good work.
Much appreciated!

Thank you for the great feedback. Michael and Aaron.
Thank you both for the info. My Mustang has P0401, P0171, and P0174 and I am going to check it out tomorrow to see what happens...
Thanks I don't have that can that expensive equipment but it gives ideas to solve a problem, very helpful video guys

Disregard my last message. I just read about your loss. MY deepest sympathies
Spray brake clean on and around vacuum lines also get some on the plug wires , if fire occurs change plug wires :-)

Yeah i have a problem with my 94 yukon i think my oil pressure sender is going bad because when i start my truck its in the middle and then when I'm driving it doesn't stay in the middle only when i accelerate it goes to the middle at 40 pci .Please can you help me with this problem. ?
I have 11.7 % on both my banks short term and long term fuel trims, at idle.!!! No vacuum leaks, it's been smoke tested, could it be a bad fuel pump?
CVT = Continuously Variable Transmission. Almost the complete opposite of Constant Velocity.
This is a great video. Thanks guys. I love the accents too!!!

It would be a real help to do some vids on a Lincoln LS 3.9

HI I have a question i have a Acura TL Type s 2007 and the check engine light came on and i checked it and it gave me a code Po174 can you help me to see what it is
What was the issue(s) with your Acura. I recently got the exact code on my Acura Mdx
como puedo conseguir el camshatf de kia rio. y como se instala si alguien sabe?
hey would having both of these lean codes affect my had mileage? & also is there a single, more common issue that results in both codes showing up?
Po300
And yes it will affect your gas mileage drastically
i have a 2001 lincoln ls v6 133k and im having problems Symptoms
•Car will only rev up when warm (200°+)
•po174, po171
•horn not working
•cut off at when idling to long
•catalytic converter glows red
• check engine light won't come on
♢ what I done so far
* clean fuel injectors and test them
*Replace ignition coils
*Replace tps, all 3 pcv and egr sensor
*Cleaned maf and IAC
*Change spark plugs
*removed exhaust system no change in engine performance
* spread around engine for vacuum leaks with Carbon cleaner no change in engine
Lp Liverpool did u get it fix ? what was wrong?
Raidel Pichardo sorry but no
Lp Liverpool ....I have the same engine as yours....mine is a jag xj8....high chances you have a bad (clogged catalytic converter ). Try a muffler shop n chop it off or have them unclog it; if ur rich enough buy another one....let me know
how much does the smoke test cost
Thank you for your question but due to the passing of Michael we do not answer questions anymore. We thank you for watching but apologize for the inconvenience.
