@@RaffiDonoianMusic well done and played ! took me much longer to manage the hand-over arpeggios :-)
you're the 2nd "keyboard guitarist" I saw breaking this down and being able to play along. Just proves (maybe) that it's not a technical challenge to play it as many watching it believe it is (who can't play keys).
The beauty of this piece lies in the artful and moody chord progression and the melodies, even though he remains practically only on the white keys -- which frankly surprised me.
And I keep getting "Downton Abby Theme" vibes mainly due to the dark "Japanese" part -- which is a bit odd 🙂
oh and I REALLY love your guitar playing !

At the premiere Ren invited everyone to take a moment to think about someone they have lost. I took the time to spend with my sister and best friend that I lost in 2015. I can not express the emotions I felt, but it was like I relived our whole lifetime, from being children, to growing up, and her losing her battle to cancer. The healing this song did for me by Ren sharing it is so incredibly hard to put in to words. I am so grateful you did this. She also played piano beautifully by ear. I find your knowledge and explanations so easy to digest, thank you 🫶

I love that he captured so much on something that on the surface seems simple. It feels melancholic at the start, then tumultuous, then reflective, and then becomes hopeful. It feels like the stages of grief. The something missing, that becomes a chaotic upset, that gives way to memories, and eventually find a way to live on.

When you understand the story of how his friend lost his life in the Sea the Piece makes more sense, the Music goes through calm, angry, sad, then a peaceful end, overall you can feel the sadness in the Music

The piece always gets to me as I associate the more intense bits with his desperate struggle to survive, and then his body drifting away. Other people hear joy, but I've never; it's always been melancholy.

That is an excellent observation. Now that you've said that, it's all I hear. The ocean comes into play in a lot of Ren's music, in words, video or just in the creative process. He talks about working on Hi Ren while sitting for a very long time on the shore watching the waves.🌊

The initial somberness set a reflective tone for me; then the speedier part evoked the more playful/rowdy times of playing around with the guys. I enjoy hearing others vision for the piece.
Interesting observation about the Japanese tones and then the Gregorian chant tones. I hadn't noticed them at all.
If anyone hasn't joined in on one of Raffi's livestreams, check it out. It's less formal and we chat about what's up in life, and listen to Raffi play some, and sometimes do an informal listen to requests.

As a non musician I'd love to see you react to some of the big push "mash ups". They seem seamless, I am guessing the musical skill to make it so seamless is a high bar. I'm sure you could explain what they do so well from a technical perspective. Big Push I Shot the Sherriff or War Pigs mash ups would be good (ren red suspender versions)

While listening to this from the first time, I kept in mind Ren and his friends.
I pictured them running around playing knock, door, run, to chilling in the pier cave he has mentioned, first kisses, first loves, playing video games, music, and sharing dreams.
Made me weep for a lost life and for Ren, who felt he could not process the accidental loss of Mackay being so close to losing Joe by suicide.
His inability to do so in words is transcended by this gorgeous tribute where nothing more is needed.
    We feel it.

When my kids were very young, I'd put on classical music and have them use their imagination to create a story according to the sound and tempo of the music. They are in their 30's and 40's now and we continue to do this. Ren apparently grew up with Calum so I hear and see the story of their lives together. The ups and downs, the joy, pain, laughter, challenges and sorrow. At the end of the song, it almost sounds unfinished, just as Calum's life was cut short. 😔 Did I make sense?

    • @Mezzystar1
      @Mezzystar1 3 місяці тому +1

Complete sense. Your kids were/are lucky to have such an imaginative and creative parent. I used to be a primary school teacher and did similar activities with my classes. It’s a great way to ‘tune-in’ quite literally to the music.

You talking about forward momentum and going “and it all happens to match up essentially with the feeling one could have when thinking about a friend who’s passed away” did kinda make me want to remind you that Ren didn’t compose this from a technical point of view but he played what he felt. Ren didn’t sit down going “how can I write a piece of music that expresses loss?”. He sat down at the piano and this started flowing out. It can of course be interesting to then talk about how it works from a technical standpoint, but I think the difference in song writing still matters. Well played though!
Personally I’m very rarely into purely instrumental music, but this somehow felt like Ren was playing words. And this is the man who is so often praised for being a brilliant lyricist as one of his main talents. Yet he didn’t need a single word to express his emotions in this one. A stunning and perfect tribute to his friend 🖤🐰🕳️

Raffi, thanks for this break-down. Very inspiring. I’d never noticed that Ren only used the white keys before. The start kinda sounds like a melody created on one of those hang-drums that are pre-tuned to a certain key, so you have a limited pallette, so to speak, to create with. There’s this feeling of expanse but within a claustrophobic confine.
This song would not be out of place in a Studio Ghibli movie, imo. Evocative.

That Japanese style transition always feels a bit foreboding to me. Someone said he was playing in Lydian mode, with all white keys. REN’s friend drowned in high winds, along with a would-be rescuer. It was a sad ending to his playful friend. Thank you so much for doing this reaction. Really enjoyed it. Ren is an untrained pianist, did you know? He has been playing since he was a kid, on the school piano.

Yeah he does only play on the white keys. I'm not familiar with a specific name for that but you could maybe say that the use of just those notes in the way he did it meant that he played in a particular musical mode, in this case A Aeolian. Maybe that's the name you were thinking of.

You have still not experienced many sides of Ren. For his singing you would maybe be interested in these songs for different reasons. All covers.
Mashup of three song parts: Back on 74, a Jungle song, then a short rap part of his own and last Message in a Bottle, The Police song. The parts bleed into each other so well, with elements of one part in the others. And in this song you can here Ren use his voice in many different ways. So great song to hear his vocals. ua-cam.com/video/oqRaADSdJLE/v-deo.html
A mashup of 5 EDM song parts by Fred Again but just Ren and his classical guitar. Great emotional singing and the way he plays the classical guitar is so strange to me but cool, his fingerpicking so powerful and snappy, if that makes sense. ua-cam.com/video/8ASggnoga9Q/v-deo.html
Also fun song with his busking band, The Big Push. A Sting cover, An Englishman in New York. Fine harmonies, like always in that band. Ren playing the electric guitar and different influences, of course reggae/ska, but also other influences, like a bit of jazzy feel in the guitar playing by Ren, like one can often hear in his voice . I'm not musically educated at all, but I've always been curious, because his other instrumental solos have all been on a six string guitar- does this translate to a guitar? How would this sound like, on strings?

Interesting having the music broken down technically but still describing emotion within the sounds. Here is what I took from an untrained ear.
Life's journey. It sounds like the ups and downs within any one life. Joy, wonder but also uncertainty and sadness but coming full circle to the end.

Since you are such a talented guy that knows his music theory, I am sure you would enjoy some Nightwish. I would love to see your takes on their music.

Hey man, your piano skills are really great for a guitarist 😄
Guessing you're somewhere around my level, except I'm primarily a piano guy (amateur), I'm way worse on guitar 😂

Interesting that you thought the "more energetic" parts indicate some type of anger, I rather felt joy and playfulness. But I can see how it could be interpreted that way too.
Also, nice playing at the end, clear "voice" separation in your right hand.

Oh, another thing I would comment on is Ren's use of the sustain pedal, he intentionally uses it in certain parts to add intensity.

Some songs are just meant to be heard all the way through the first time, I feel. Still, a fine reaction nonetheless.

That's definitely the tricky part of these reactions. I wanna listen to the song but then it would just be people watching me stare at my screen 😂

@@RaffiDonoianMusic Tim Welch Vocal Studios does it regularly so it's not unheard of, but I was speaking more specifically about a tune written for a deceased friend. Sometimes the subject matter calls for it. It doesn't mean you're wrong, though. You do you.
