You're making one last fall from the sky and the stakes are high. If you fail here, your efforts of stopping the villain were for nothing as you could never save what you were trying to save, but you clutch and save it at the last moment, now able to safely return to solid ground.

I always love that Sonic loses the superform when the Prison Egg explodes open. It implies that it hit Sonic with enough force that it knocked the Chaos Emeralds right outta him and sent them soaring off, so he couldn't just turn back into Super Sonic to catch Vanilla; He had to rely on his own power. And thankfully for Vanilla, it was enough to save the day.
It's also a nice little throwback to Sonic 3 & Knuckles, in how if Sonic is hit with enough force, he can be knocked out of the superform. Nice touch.
