Holy cow brother. Really happy I stumbled across this video. I actually went to a slide in camper place the other day to see about purchasing one. I’m about to stop working and just travel while I transition out of the military and the slide in camper just makes complete sense. Never knew other companies existed. Thanks for sharing this video. You now have 1 more subscriber.
I had the same thing happen in the Wind River Mountains in Wyoming. I woke up to some noise, flung the door open of my camper and found a grizzly bear on its hind legs, front paws on the hood of my brand new F350. He ended up putting big scratches from those massive claws in the hood! Come to find out, they like to lick the windshield because of the dead bugs. Congrats on the new outfit and enjoy making more memories!
Awesome. You mind telling me where in the Winds? I spend a lot of time on the reservation side and have heard of some grizz sitings in the bull Creek drainage. Never seen one though. Be interested in the rough location.
I watched your video based on a share from a FB pop-up camper page. He commented how you had a bear scare the first night out in it. We have traveled out west to that area the past two summers from VA and love it. We roughed it in a topper for two summers, talked about it all the way home last year and invested in an older pristine slide-in pop up when we got home. We are shooting for a Sept. departure this year and hope to do this every year. We too love the lifestyle and as we move closer to full retirement plan to spend more and more time out there!
Wow! NIce! I've been motorcycle camping for the last few decades with a 2 man tent, themal rest pad and a Jet Boil...this would be like a luxury hotel! Love it! Got me thinking now, the old bones would be happier!
I'm glad you took off your shoes in the new camper. I would do the same after years of my Dad's upbringing but I digress. lol I'm 51 and looking at a similar rig but with a F 250. At the end of the day, I'm single and have a job I enjoy but the routine is getting old. I love the West and 'someday' will move out there. But where? I'm tired of exploring through the computer screen waiting for retirement. I feel like there are many more opportunities that would present themselves vs sitting at home. Now I just need the balls to spend some savings and just do it. Glad I came across your channel today. Good timing for me. Thanks, looking forward to more!
If you’ve got nothing stopping you, there’s nothing stopping you. Good jobs abound if you are good at what you do, are in an industry that’s doing ok right now, you have a bit of cheddar saved up. It often amazes me how little I need to be happy. I once took a 13,000 mile, nine month Overland trip and it turned out that it didn’t really cost me more than about $1500 a month including everything... and that includes all of my living expenses, storage unit, insurance and everything else. I also once took a two week trip to Belize and had an extraordinary time and the entire trip including airfare only cost $850 for two weeks! The way I see it ( if you watch my channel you will learn this) my dad died at 56 years old-I’m going to be 51 this year just like you-If you really want something, there’s no better time than today to make it happen. Tomorrow you might not be so lucky to have that perspective. My friend Brian moved out west two years ago from Philly. He hadn’t really spent much time out here. At this very moment he is touring in a sprinter he just bought and is camping on Lake Tahoe. He said he will never go back to the East. Cheers, Kurt!
@@4XPEDITION Thanks for sharing as different perspectives help for sure. The cost per month sounds about right. In the end I feel like it's simply throwing caution to the universe and just running with it. Usually everything works out if you put the effort in. And you gave a great example with your buddy. I'm sub'd so of course I'll be watching more! Thank you.
Enjoyed your video of part #1 of your loop through Montana, Wyoming, etc. Looking forward to watching the rest of the series. I am also interested in your pop up truck camper. I currently own a Ram 1500 Lariat, 4X4, crew cab, short bed that I take off road frequently. I also own a Crosssroads Cruiser fifth wheel camper that I love, but I would like to miove back into a more simple method of camping. I started out tent camping, then moved into pop up camping trailer and truck camper, then moved up to a hard sided camper, then up to the fifth wheel. Now, at (77) years old I want to move back to smaller, lighter, easier camping methods! I currently live in central Oklahoma, but I was born in the east and have done most of my camping in the forests of WV, Ohio< MD, MI, and PA. Its just become too much preparation and expense to keep driving back to PA every year pulling (34) feet of fifth wheel camper! Thanks for your very good video! Montana is one of the States that I want to travel and camp in. .
Great rig you are putting together! Congratulations on some good decisions. It is interesting to follow you along as the Ram and new camper are becoming yours. Thanks for bringing us along on this adventure. Take care!
Glad you told me about Part 1, thoroughly enjoyed! Montana is an amazing place, glad you're finding out about her beauty. Housing prices have pretty much tripled here in the last decade, hope you can find a nice reasonable bit of land if you're called this direction. The land is good, people are good, pace is good, life is good. Looking forward to Part 3!
BREATHTAKING BEAUTY COLORS SCENERY VIEWS VIDEO ! LIKE THE TRUCK CAMPER SETUP ! AWESOME EXPERIENCE WITH THE ROCKING OF THE TRUCK & PAW & NOSE PRINTS AFTER THE THE ROCKING OF THE TRUCK . BE SAFE ! HAVE FUN ! GOD BLESS YOU BOTH ALWAYS ON YOUR JOURNEYS ! ENJOYED !
Thank you for sharing your dreams and aspirations...quite interesting to me personally. My wife passed away in June and I've decided to "unshelf" some of my dreams which includes finding my own piece of the rock as it were. My dreams have to be on a more limited budget as my Air Force retirement can only go so far. I will follow you along on your ambitious path to your success. Good luck and best wishes to you and Amy.
So your wife passed away only about a month or so ago? If so, I’m really sorry to hear that Alexander. I’m sure that has been a very challenging time for you. May this new chapter bring beautiful experiences and new lasting memories.
Thank you so much for this vlog & journey of your Ram Rebel Overland Upgrade. I kept looking at the Ram 1500 TRX thinking that's what I need when I install a slide in camper eventually. Loved your reference that "it's for the everyday man or women. Thank you so much for this information! You're set up is exactly what I'm looking forward to when I work remotely in Cyber Security with my future All-White German Shepherd pup along with the journey. Subscribed!
Thanks for sharing your experience with the truck camper installation, the camping in Montana, and the wonderful article about the 24 year old grizzly mama bear! ♡
Thanks for your video. I’ve spent some summer months camping and backpacking in the greater Yellowstone area and have seen grizzlies and lots more calling cards such as trees shredded like a scratching post attacked with a gaffers hook 8-10’ up, or torn up ground in Glacier from a bear searching for bulbs or pocket gophers. Grizzlies are amazing creatures and worthy of respect and caution due to their incredible physical capabilities. Please be safe. I would never be without bear spray in a holster on my person especially after finding that my camp site got sniffed around like this . I to would have explored around the area later in the day, but with spray and with extra vigilance and, depending on topography, some deliberate noise making so as not to surprise the “neighbors”. I would likely have a can also in the camper and in the cab jic. As I cruise towards retirement age, I’m looking forward to having a rig like yours, but I’m not sure what my comfort level would be say up in Alaska with the really big bears…when backpacking, I got used to setting up my kitchen well down wind of my tent and hanging my food, so i can’t help but cringe a bit when I see others cooking greasy food right under their fabric fold out roof tent as it seems like a recipe for getting a late night inspection that you do not want. For me I might want a camper where I could access the cab from the camper in an emergency if I had to bug out or I might consider a vans immediate potential mobility a little less exposed to human or animal threats. Also not totally sure of their efficacy, but I might stow an air horn in the camper as a potential deterrent to curious critters. In my opinion a firearm, especially if it’s treated like the only defense, is more likely to provide a false sense of security when you are in true bear country,. Especially as it is pretty unlikely that most could put down a grizzly quick enough for it not to able to settle the score with you in a very ugly way. What’s most practical is being aware of how to minimize unexpected contact by modifying our own behavior. The mantras I got from backpacking in grizzly country were don’t surprise a bear, never eat inside your tent and don’t wear smelly products. With boondocking in fairly remote areas I’m not sure I’ve figured out my own comfort level of minimizing risk in a soft sided camper vs my experience the even more vulnerable position of being in a small tent…that said, there are certainly places with good reason that prohibit soft sided campers as a truly motivated bear could easily shred canvas or smash or pry open plastic window. But it’s not like the news is full of stories of deadly bear on camper attacks…just that on the rare occasion when the worst happens in the backcountry (if it wasn’t triggered by surprising a sow with cubs or a bear with a carcass) a lot of the time it turns out somebody ate in their tent… Not being at the top of the food chain can be a character building experience lol Stay safe
Absolutely brilliant, stunning and professional, but relaxing and like someone else commented, inspiring !! Was great to see the Great British icon in the parking lot, a LandRover 110 !!! You sure are living all our dreams out there and you definitely sound to be enjoying it too Scott !!!! Love following your journey and cannot wait for the next instalment. Very best wishes, Paul. UK.
Thanks so much for watching and commenting Paul. That bit I said about the cabin network toward the end I mention Europeans and thought of you, man. Cheers!
Thank you for this nice video. My fiance and I have almost the same plans as you, as far as the type of truck, truck camper, and travel destinations. I'm gonna be looking for a Rebel or 2500 Cummins within the next few months. Stay safe, and have fun !
It is a good life. I would say my 1500 wasn't really ideal for that sized camper. It was pushing the limit. I would go with a 2500 and a longer bed so the camper doesn't stick out the back.
Sounds like a great trip. That sunset makes the camper so worth it! Glad that bear wasn't too hungry! This last spring I built a little camping rig in the back of my RAM 1500; but nothing nearly as nice as your rig!
Thats why i would be nervouse to have a tent in MT. Bears are all over the place. I realize some of it is hard shell but a grizzly thats stands 10 feet tall would not be fun to wake up to. Beautiful video and landscape. MT is such a great place. Safe travels!
Just found your channel. We just spent ten days in Yellowstone/Paradise Valley area. My wife and I are two years younger than you, but moving in a similar direction. I look forward to watching more of your videos.
Greetings from Australia! I accidentally stumbled across your UA-cam today! 😀 I'm an avid International traveller. Haven't been able to do so due to the pandemic. Now I'm watching and gathering all the information on car camping. You have certainly inspired me a lot after watching this episode and the older one on your Subaru Outback (I'm thinking of getting one for that purpose). Subscribed! Can't wait to see more. Cheers, mate!
Welcome aboard! Glad to have you as a subscriber! Some great episodes on the channel that I am sure you will enjoy. I think I am at about 82 episodes now!
Hello everybody! This is part 1 of a three-part adventure excursion video series. Be sure to tune in to watch part 2 and 3! In Part 2, you will explore Yellowstone National Park with me alone... hardly anybody was in the park as I arrived just as they opened their doors back up to the public. I also explore Grand Teton National park. In Part 3, come along with me to explore Flaming Gorge which flanks the border of Wyoming and Utah. Here I take the paddle board out on this stunning body of water. I also take the new 4XPEDITION RAM 1500 Overland Explorer down Shafer trail in Canyonlands National Park near Moab, Utah and watch the sun rise over Monument valley. Some epic viewing coming your way with these three episodes! Over 2,660 video clips were captured on this adventure. Let me know what you think.
Very nice. We almost bought one but ended up getting a custom made Phoenix Minimax popup with wetbath. Once you sleep with someone else on an east/west bed, but you quickly appreciate opening it up to north/south and not rollover your partner on a bathroom run in the middle of the night.
Great video. Glad I found you. Looking forward to seeing more . What you have is of special interest to me because I recently found a 30 year old very well preserved Skamper eight foot popup. Have it mounted on my old short bed GMC with the tailgate down. All things considered it's working out well. Planning my "escape" from NY State soon. Heading for Florida in October!
Welcome aboard David! Hope you subscribe and be sure to check out some of the other videos on the channel. There are Adventure videos, Gear Guide and Tips and Tricks videos. Lots of stuff to check out.
Ads are interesting.... basically, I can control how many there are so I create "breaks" in my videos in production to place them. I generally only have maybe 2-3 ads for an hour video. However, after uploading a video, UA-cam auto fills your video with ads that you then have to go back and delete out what you don't want. If I left all the ads in that UA-cam suggests, an hour video would have about 20 plus add breaks. As a creator, we have to have ads. Otherwise, we get paid nothing for our work. And, I will share that ad revenue is marginal at best. Thanks!
@@4XPEDITION totally understand the model. keep up the great work. hope you understand what I meant .. no disrespect to you. 👍🇨🇦 just saying UA-cam is much like regular tv. have a grand day.
@@4XPEDITION I am right on the edge of it. For sure. I commuted to Draper for 20 years for work. Recently retired. I look forward to more videos. I want to do a trip to the north rim in the next year. I did it once when I was younger in the winter.
Cool Camper. I have one of the competitor campers - I like some of the things on this one. Specifically the area above the bed isn't hindered by the push stick that I have to use. And the windows, the windows in this are great. Aside from that pretty similar.
Just stumbled onto your channel and this video after looking at these campers. Kudos to you for following your dream. As someone who lives in Wyoming where we have a lot of black bear and Grizzly, I was surprised to see you taking off hiking without bear spray at the minimum,, just after a bear visited your camp. I hope you will carry bear spray with you when in bear country. Good luck and enjoy the mountains!
insane how this is only part one.... talking about your next steps in your life plan is really inspiring me as well. I'm only 22, but I'm getting into overlanding with my 2017 outback. Thank you so much for this perspective and knowledge, it's really priceless!!!
Hi Jake! I am so glad that what I created inspires you. Especially at such a young age. You have a lot of options and nothing but time ahead of you. Go for it!
Great series on the Camp X. Can you share more on the portable LED and mount? Brand, model etc.? Also as you have moved from a car to a slide in, perhaps a video on all the gear for the truck and slide in as a buyers guide for the new truck camper owner?
Excellent idea! And, as far as equipment goes, the best place I can send you to learn all about all the gear I use is here: 4xpedition.com/equipment/ If you scroll down you will see different kinds of equipment. Click the category of choice and then on each page I have a list of all gear I use. I will be adding a page for the Camp-X soon. You will find the LEDs on the Overland Equipment page under Lighting System.
You can change the bulbs that came with the camper to softer light, this way it looks better with all those clunky lights hanging from the ceiling. LED lights use very little battery!
I have Jeep gladiator with 23 zero roof top tent. I have a trail cam wifi that set up outside pointing to Jeep at night. I got several videos of Black Bears trying get in back of bed to the Domectic Fridge.
No same thing. Woke me up. I felt car moving, then heard a thump. Unzipped window look down he was looking up at me. Then walked away. Americian Black Bear. AKA ghost of the forest. They are so quiet. Amazing animals first time had camera on trail, that he did not use. Second night had it set at campsite, and got footage of him.
I'm 44 and I have the same exact goal and mindset. I just picked up a truck rather than a van and my camper is on order. Would love to join you one day. Subscribing.
@@4XPEDITION I'm a person that will do my due diligence and research first. There's lots of fakes account, so-called this or that taking advantage of people. I'm sure you're not but as soon as I get feedbacks and read up on reviews, I will definitely sign up. Can't wait.
I've not really looked at them much to do a comparison. I've seen them though. Are they 100% composite and aluminum? You don't want a camper with wood and staples.
4XPEDITION Aluminum Exoskeleton. No wood or metal frames. You basically can screw in mounts anywhere on the shell and it holds. Only wood is the benches and kitchen. Propane heater and just as light as the on e you have. I really was not crazy about a pop up for security and extreme temps. I’m driving a 2019 Ram 1500 6’4” box. Probably will upgrade to 2021 if they go to Uconnect 5. I love to get the air shocks too this time. I think these both it will be a great setup.
This coming weekend I will be releasing a Pursuit of Cabin Living Series video on my channel that will share the latest developments of my life plan. Watch for that, Dorin!
Yay! I've been waiting for this new series! You did not disappoint. For some reason I thought you went with 4Wheel Campers, never heard of Overland Explorer, but I like what I am seeing so far. Their website lacks in the way of price. Brand new Ram with bear prints...You are so calm Scott. I was like, Damn Bear! Then I was like, what a cool story to tell. Besides, if you are like me, enough AZ "pin striping" will cover those paw prints. LOL. Can't wait for part two! Stay safe Scott.
Hey there GT&P! Glad to have you watch the latest episode. I discovered Overland Explorer and was just so impressed with not only the components and building materials and quality but also the guys who own the company (Arnold and Mark) and their technical backgrounds I bought a Camp X Sight unseen. Yep! I bought it and drove 15 hours before I ever saw it in person. (Did a lot of research in advance and talked on the phone with OE as well as talked on Expedition Portal with a guy named Chad from Bozeman that had an unbelievably detailed build thread.) I really thought this episode came out right... good diversity. The next two episodes though... some amazing footage coming.
@@4XPEDITION I couldn't buy the Ram or any vehicle sight unseen, but definitely the Camp X, especially after the research you did. I have already planted the "road trip seed" to Montana from Buckeye. Not to pick up a Camp X, but to visit Yellowstone and the surrounding area. I hope you are enjoying your Saturday.
WhT an awesome rig for overland travels. I have a Toyota FJ with a rooftop tent. I am widowed and now 75 years young. I am thinking of what to do to keep exploring and need to be off the ground, that setup could work for me. Does your ram truck carry the weight or did you need to add airbags? I see you do have some overhanging the truck bed. Keep posting and I will keep watching. Your friend in Pennsylvania. Bob
I've been considering the overlanding/vanlife lifestyle for some time. Trying to decide on what rig. Searched 4x4 Ram camper and this came up. It seems a great option for getting into the back country. I'll search for your video explaining your decision to go this route instead of a sprinter conversion. I have the same idea of traveling the north and south west to find a piece of property to retire on.
Well, it’s been over a year since that video came out. If you Watch some of my recent videos you’ll find that I found my piece of property bought it and I am renovating a cabin right now. Look for those videos. Lots of good stuff happening! Thanks for the comment.
We are in our 50's also and doing the exact same thing you are, building out our truck and looking for a piece of land in the pacific northwest. Would love to compare ideas.
Hi there Carmen! Unfortunately I had to sell the slide in camper. Still have the truck and will turn it into an overland truck, but decided to hold off on replacing it. Happy to chat any time. Complete the contact form on 4xpedition.com and we can chat.
Nice camper. Did you add helper springs? At 1,200 pounds may not leave a lot of payload for a lot of 1/2 ton trucks. Nice to see 4 wheel campers get a little competition.
bet you wish you had a diesel. More power is never a bad thing. Great video. Still deciding on a camper. I'll be pulling a side by side on a trailer as well. This looks very promising for a small footprint, easy set up camper.

Hope to obtain a larger tract of land at some point. Have you watched any of The Pursuit of Cabin Living series on my channel? All about what I have been doing since I shared that commentaty in this video. Check it out.
Hi, from Kyiv, Ukraine. Good Job! Watching you last half-year!!! Thanks for your efforts! P.S. You motivated me to buy a Subaru Outback for traveling. BR Max!
Thanks for the nice video, I was in Boseman a few years ago camped outside of Red Lodge, Bear tooth pass. Nice slide in you have, you never said the price.
Thinking about the exact same setup...Ram Rebel with that style camper. Curious to hear how you feel the truck handles the weight? I'm a little worried about exceeding payload and the impact it has on handling, braking etc...? Thanks very much, love the video!
Handled it pretty well, to be honest. But, you should know that I sold off that entire setup earlier this year. Mostly because I sold it all for a great price and now I have a Powerwagon.
Great video Scott. I've been looking at 4 Wheel Campers for a couple of years, did'nt know about Overland Explorer. Quick question... the map you show at 1:12 with your route and key locations annotated... how did you do that? What software? My wife and I are on a very long trip, I'd like to do a map like this to send to freinds.
I made that in Photoshop. I will tell you that I use My Maps in Google Maps to create route maps and I will also share that my friend Brian just introduced me to a great app you will probably love called RoadTrippers. Check that out. He planned a big trip back east and showed it to me. Was really cool.
Same thing happened to me in my Four Wheel Camper. Felt the camper rocking, looked out the window and came nose to nose with a black bear. Come morning, I took photos of all the paw prints all over the side of my truck. That's the reason I never cook inside the camper. I live in BC Canada. Pretty everywhere I camp is black bear and grizzly territory.
Ya BC is bear country for sure. Coming from Arizona we have Black Bears but I have only seen two in the last 30 years of adventuring in the wilds of nature in that state. We have more Mountain Lions than anything but I have only seen one of those.
@@4XPEDITION I live in North Vancouver. The more "rugged" portion of Vancouver. Backcountry is a short run away. I have a black bear den in my neighbour's yard. Soooo....we see a lot of bears. lol
Wow did you pick a Great spot. All that green, the running clean water, the birds chirping away and snow capped mountains, all remind me of my home back east in New Hampshire, where we have the WHITE MOUNTAINS, LOL, just like Arizona does. Oh yea and the muddy roads, awesome.. Man I miss NH badly. I can't believe you sat there reading with the door wide open w a bear out there somewhere... At least if he nudges the closed door you could pull out bear spray or sidearm... Then again I was thinking maybe a Dad and child Sasquatch visited you this am. More likely them than a Bear, I would think the bear would have broken the window... How tall is your sleeping window about 8' off ground? That's about the dads shoulder height, with a back width of 50" ,, Can you imagine? He was probably watching you sleep and had his son shake the truck,, lol. It wouldn't be the first time.... LOL
I was just talking to my bud, Brian about the White Mountains. I would like to get over that way and explore more. I went on a long 13,000 mile trip over a 9-month period back in 2012 and roamed up in Vermont, Upstate NY and Quebec but missed New Hampshire. Would love to check out that state.
@@4XPEDITION Definitely you got to check out NH. If you got to White Mountains you will go onto the Kangamangus Highway, 34 miles long cuts through the W.M. at approx halfway point around 17 miles coming from either direction stop and there will be a beautiful place to sit in the Swift River , rock is all smooth will bring you downstream about 70 yards into a pool about 14 ' deep . you go right over the waterfalls into the pool. I been going since my parents brought us about 50 yrs ago then I brought my 3 Sons every summer Now my son's bring their kids (my grandkids) great native trout fishing swimming camping .. So many gorgeous places in White Mountains that the State maintains . caverns, rivers gorges that are safe to walk right through all setup safely.. Awesome new rig. Is this new co with the Camper slide in on the stock market? It seems everything you touch turns to gold.. Lol. I could live in that setup, it's perfect Jeff. Let me know if you go through NH. I'm heading back east soon I think, seeing how safe it is driving cross Country. Miss my kids too much. Be careful out there.
@@HateTheIRS Each to his own. Some people want to camp only in generic easy to access campgrounds. Some want to go and actually feel like they are away from everything. I prefer the latter.
@@deepsix1827 that’s why I will never take out loans. Unless it’s necessary, and I know for a fact I am able to pay it off. If I take a 20k loan for a car, I’d want 20k in my bank account, so I 100% know I can pay it off. Then why get a loan? To establish credit history, or if I am buying a house, I’d make sure I have 100k available, so if I lose my job, I’m still able to make the payments.
Seems Camp-X is so much more advance than FWCs, and better suited for the Northeast weather. What's the current weight of your camper as it sit on the truck, and can you sit up comfortably on the dinette when the top is down? Great video, thanks for sharing.
Happy to answer any questions you might have. Just go to 4XPEDITION.com and fill out the contact form. I always answer questions if people have them. Cheers, Garry!
It’s so cool to watch you enjoy your new setup, and we get to share in this excitement vicariously. What song were you using for your drive through Utah up to Montana? Your potential grizzly encounter is the EXACT reason why I would go with a Camp-X over a RTT. As for the green mountain paradise...there’s a trade off...Winter. Stay safe, and I look forward to future episodes.
Hey thanks Chris! I imagine you liked this one better than one of the previous video you commented on. ;-) Glad you are here. So, the ideal situation is summer in the green paradise and winter in the desert. This is my goal. 4XPEDITION to have two 'camps', one in the mountains and one in the desert. Since we only have this one life to live and I have only about 40-45 years to live it and up to my full potential, this is what drives my action. As you probably recall if you watch my videos, my pops died at 56!
Hi there. Unfortunately, I don't share spots outright to the public. I only do so within the TEAM 4X Member Portal. This reduces the footprint on the locations.
I’m sure you’ve got some by now, but bear spray, my friend. At minimum. I live in Montana, and that walk you took had me scanning the trees! 😂 Life map: Includes a camper like this and taking my photography ;my job) on the road. I’ve got 20 acres in NM Montana, and escapes CA to this amazing place at 52, so our age/life paths are similar. Question: How is the Ram 1500 with that in the back? Need for extra suspension, and how is your fuel mileage? Hope all is well!
Awesome video! What the payload of your truck and weight of the camper? I have a 2019 ram 1500 classic hemi and I am curious if it will work with the pop up truck I just bought. I'm from Arizona as well haha up north. White mountains they call it. Just north of show low az
Hey Dan! Good to hear from another Arizonan! I have airbags in the rear of my truck. I also have coil springs rather than AirRide. I would say that my payload was about 1600. The campx was about 1300 dry.
I will tell you this though, I have since sold that slide in camper. If I get another truck camper it will not be a pop up. And, it will also be a Four season...Which also means I might upgrade to a 2500 or 3500
@@4XPEDITION I was already thinking that too haha I want to trade in my truck for a 2500 or 3500 and get a truck camper with slide outs. I still really like truck campers more than pull behinds. Hope you find something you like! Why did you get rid of the pop though? Seemed like you liked it
Ok, so it’s not a Subaru Outback.... But it’s sure really nice setup! Exciting times ahead. Thanks for taking us along. Any upgrades to the truck planned? Wench, suspension lift and shocks? I was looking at 4x4 Sprinter Vans and it sure looks like you have a better rig for the money.
Yeah, Sprinters are awesome but the cost is just unjustifyable to me for my purposes. The Subi is staying in the mix. I will be using that often. I do have a 3-4" lift, 35" tires and a set of wheels planned. Likely add some skid plates. Doubt I will need rock sliders but maybe a front and rear bumper replacement. And, of course LED lighting.
Great video, Scott! Love the cinematography and the sunsets in Montana! Great rig, but maybe I missed it....are you planning on wrapping the truck or painting it with that special covering? Just wondering if white was the best choice in colo(u)r for an off-road rig. Keep on putting out great stuff.
Scott Did you mention you did a video on comparing a pop truck camper vs a Sprinter Van? If so can you please add link? Thanks I need to travel and make a decision. Good stuff Thanks
Can you leave your tailgate on? Looks like the camper hangs out the ass end of the truck a bit anyway. Also which bed do you have 5’7 or 6’4? Thanks for the vid!
Great video! Maybe we'll get a chance to see your rig at overland expo west. How much does camper weigh with fluids, loaded up, etc. ? Also what was your reasoning for not going with diesel?
Been there, done that... I had a huge bear trip over my tent guyline in the middle of the night. The next day a camper just down the trail had a bear raid his tent, steal his backpack and eat an entire package of PopTarts. (I never keep my food in my tent and opt for a bear canister far from my sleeping area).
Hi man loved part one of your 3 part video’s scary with the Bears footprints on your hood 😱 and I loved your grey jacket you was waring towards the end where did you get it from ?
Hi Terry. Do you mean the Patagonia jacket I was wearing when talking about moving on to the next phase of life? If so, I got that jacket on the clearance rack at REI. ;-)
Nice video! Was interested to watch as we are doing the same thing next month - driving to Montana from Arizona for installation (also purchased sight unseen!). I like seeing what people do for storage and organization and the extras they add. Do you mind sharing a name or link for those LED lights? Looking forward to the next two videos. Thanks!
You now have 1 more subscriber.
thank you for adding the clip of you taking off the plastic from the window, satisfaction 10/10
LOL. I agree. Satisfying!
WOW! That is a good reason to wash the front profile of the camper!! Don't want him coming up there to lick any bugs.
Awesome. You mind telling me where in the Winds? I spend a lot of time on the reservation side and have heard of some grizz sitings in the bull Creek drainage. Never seen one though. Be interested in the rough location.
@@UnitedElectric Lava Mountain, Tripod Peak and Pilot Knob area. The problem Grizzlies get dumped in the Moccasin Basin area.
Holly sh*t!!!
It could have ripped threw the camper fabric. That was a close one
Hi Becky! Thanks for watching and for commenting. The west is alluring for sure! Hope you subscribe. More episodes from that trip to come.
Wow! NIce! I've been motorcycle camping for the last few decades with a 2 man tent, themal rest pad and a Jet Boil...this would be like a luxury hotel! Love it! Got me thinking now, the old bones would be happier!
Ha! The old bones can always be happier. The camper could come with a masseuse. ;-)
I'm glad you took off your shoes in the new camper. I would do the same after years of my Dad's upbringing but I digress. lol
I'm 51 and looking at a similar rig but with a F 250.
Paulo Coelho once said, “If you think adventure is dangerous, try routine. It’s lethal.”
Thank you.
Do it now...before you know it you'll be 61...
@@jeffinphx517 I did. I bought a Tundra! No regrets. I'm going to enjoy the next few years. Tx
Montana is one of the States that I want to travel and camp in. .
Good share, William!
Great rig you are putting together! Congratulations on some good decisions. It is interesting to follow you along as the Ram and new camper are becoming yours. Thanks for bringing us along on this adventure. Take care!
Thank you, James for continuing to follow along. Lots of great things to come!
Very well edited video. I didn't plan to spend an hour watching it but I couldn't turn it off.
Nice! That’s the plan. To keep you engaged! :-) glad you enjoyed it.
Ahhh! Nice! I just responded to your comment on the other video!

Subscribed!
Glad I could help! The TRX is an amazing truck... expensive though. Not sure you would need that level.
Thanks for sharing your experience with the truck camper installation, the camping in Montana, and the wonderful article about the 24 year old grizzly mama bear! ♡
You bet!
So cool, I just turned 50 and I'm so ready to move on I want to exactly what you are doing
It's a good life.
But it’s not like the news is full of stories of deadly bear on camper attacks…just that on the rare occasion when the worst happens in the backcountry (if it wasn’t triggered by surprising a sow with cubs or a bear with a carcass) a lot of the time it turns out somebody ate in their tent…
Not being at the top of the food chain can be a character building experience lol
Stay safe
True true.
I enjoy watching the long videos you post please make more. stay safe brother
Thanks again, Mitchell!
Cheers!
Sounds good to me Scott and yes I noticed the "European" mention 👍 I wonder how many European followers you have 🤔. Really looking forward to Part 2 👍
Nice. Nothing at all wrong with a home made cabin for the truck. Was it light weight?

Greetings from Australia!
I accidentally stumbled across your UA-cam today! 😀
I'm an avid International traveller. Haven't been able to do so due to the pandemic. Now I'm watching and gathering all the information on car camping. You have certainly inspired me a lot after watching this episode and the older one on your Subaru Outback (I'm thinking of getting one for that purpose).

This entire setup would cost in the line of ...? Worth every penny.
I can give you that information if you visit 4xpedition.com and complete the contact form. All the best.
What a nice set up and place to camp at. Following your outdoor journey. Stay safe.
Thank you!

Very nice. We almost bought one but ended up getting a custom made Phoenix Minimax popup with wetbath. Once you sleep with someone else on an east/west bed, but you quickly appreciate opening it up to north/south and not rollover your partner on a bathroom run in the middle of the night.
Ya, there is that. :-)
Good luck on your ventures. Finding UA-cam much like regular TV with all these adds.
Lol. Welcome to the SLC valley. I live in Payson. At the very bottom of the long city. It sucks going north. That is a pretty cool set up.
Ouch. That is a horrible commute if you have to drive anywhere further north. But, where you live down there is sure nice.
There is one huge difference. This one has no staples or wood in its architecture. All composite material and aluminum. What camper do you have?
Just stumbled onto your channel and this video after looking at these campers. Kudos to you for following your dream.
As someone who lives in Wyoming where we have a lot of black bear and Grizzly, I was surprised to see you taking off hiking without bear spray at the minimum,, just after a bear visited your camp. I hope you will carry bear spray with you when in bear country. Good luck and enjoy the mountains!
Thank you Scott!
insane how this is only part one.... talking about your next steps in your life plan is really inspiring me as well.
Go for it!
Wow, that truck is a lot quieter than the Subi... AND lots of TORQUE!
Haha! A LOT quieter. And tons of TORQUE!

Good idea.
I have Jeep gladiator with 23 zero roof top tent. I have a trail cam wifi that set up outside pointing to Jeep at night. I got several videos of Black Bears trying get in back of bed to the Domectic Fridge.
Did they wake you at all or just discovered on the footage the next day?
No same thing. Woke me up. I felt car moving, then heard a thump. Unzipped window look down he was looking up at me. Then walked away. Americian Black Bear. AKA ghost of the forest. They are so quiet. Amazing animals first time had camera on trail, that he did not use. Second night had it set at campsite, and got footage of him.
Awesome vid man. I've seen your Subie around Scottsdale from time to time. Nice looking rigs.

I think I’m sold on Scout Campers. Another great option.

For some reason I thought you went with 4Wheel Campers, never heard of Overland Explorer, but I like what I am seeing so far.
Their website lacks in the way of price.

Very nice setup. I like this better than the 4-wheel camper. I'm sure it's heavier, but not too much so.
The 4WC Hawk weights 1075. The Camp-X weighs 1200.
Bob
Hey there Bob! Thanks for checking in. Yes, I have AirLift airbags in the rear holding about 30lb of pressure to help level off the rear.

Yes! Errr. Just a really tall guy and his kid.
First time on your site Awesome...............................Will be watching more.
Thank you Derek!
Nice camper. Did you add helper springs? At 1,200 pounds may not leave a lot of payload for a lot of 1/2 ton trucks. Nice to see 4 wheel campers get a little competition.
Couldn't agree more with you about FWC. I added rear AirLift bags inside the rear coils.
bet you wish you had a diesel. More power is never a bad thing.
Great video. Still deciding on a camper. I'll be pulling a side by side on a trailer as well. This looks very promising for a small footprint, easy set up camper.

Thanks for the nice video, I was in Boseman a few years ago camped outside of Red Lodge, Bear tooth pass. Nice slide in you have, you never said the price.
You can get one in the mid to high $30k range. Thanks for watching, George!
I own a 2019 Rebel and Im thinking of getting a slide in like this. I just need to get an extended gas tank and the camper then im off!
I'm disappointed that you didn't show more of the installation. Happy travels, though.
Yeah, was kind of hard to in their shop.
October just passed happy birthday 🎂🎈
Thank you Mitchell!
$30 plus thousand is crazy for a camper like this, nice as it is.
Yeah might as well get a RV trailer
@@HateTheIRS Then you are restricted to the pavement.
@@danphilbert7908 I don’t want to scratch and dent my brand new vehicle thank you.
They definitely are more advanced. The camper weighs about 1300 dry if I recall. Yes you can sit up.
I'm totally on board.
Happy to answer any questions you might have. Just go to 4XPEDITION.com and fill out the contact form. I always answer questions if people have them. Cheers, Garry!
Keep it up Bro. Enjoy life, once in a life time adventure.. You're new subscriber.. 👍👍👍
Welcome Alexander!
Can you share your best valleys and pinpoints found?
Hi there. Unfortunately, I don't share spots outright to the public. I only do so within the TEAM 4X Member Portal. This reduces the footprint on the locations.
I live in Montana (on Hauser Lake) and wait desperately every winter so camping season can begin. ps - hope you always carry bear spray
Yes, that and other protection.
Dust pan should hang below food preparation counter.
Yes, you are right
I’m sure you’ve got some by now, but bear spray, my friend.
Awesome video I love it
Awesome video!
Seemed like you liked it
Only 300lb left for passengers, luggage, & 20gal of water. Seems like you are way over payload.
2:27 is heaven
Nice.
Love it. I am a couple of,steps, behind you. Buying an f150 right now. Can it haul that camper..? Very motivating vid. Thank you
I would think so, Mob. I put airbags in the rear to support.
Awesome camper! Amazing scenery!
Thank you!
You need a trail cam. Costco has a decent one for about $100. You tie it to a tree facing your rig and it starts recording with movement.
I do.
nice scenery and great camper.
It really is!
Yes my friend, there is a full wrap for the truck and camper planned in 4X branding!
Scott Did you mention you did a video on comparing a pop truck camper vs a Sprinter Van? If so can you please add link? Thanks I need to travel and make a decision. Good stuff Thanks
I never got around to making that video. Sorry Dave.
@@4XPEDITION No worries I enjoy your adventures and need to start doing that
life is moving fast
Enjoy your land purchase
Very happy Mr.
From Indonesia
Thx.
What upgrades did you do to your Ram 1500 Rebel to be able to haul that slide in camper?
Added rear coil air bags that I can inflate and deflate.
I never want to leave Montana or Wyoming either….in the spring & summer.
It is stunning.
I have truck camped for some 30 years and I have to say I have never heard of a certifield truck camper installer.
;-)
Can you leave your tailgate on? Looks like the camper hangs out the ass end of the truck a bit anyway. Also which bed do you have 5’7 or 6’4? Thanks for the vid!
Not on my 5' 7" truck bed, no. It does stick out a bit. Would be better to have a longer bed.
Hi scott. Did change your suspention on you rebel Because i got ram 1500 2021 short box 5'5 classic.
I added adjustable rear airbags in the coil springs.
Great video! Maybe we'll get a chance to see your rig at overland expo west. How much does camper weigh with fluids, loaded up, etc. ? Also what was your reasoning for not going with diesel?
Sold the camper recently. Will talk about that in my upcoming video.
Wow,that was quick! Hope your going with flatbed next.
I noticed that your camper has roof racks. Could you put a canoe or kayak up There maybe a fishing kayak?
Wow! Imagine if you were in a tent with a huge bear sniffing around. YIKES!
Hmm, what is a "Partner Type"? Never heard that term before.
I forget where in the episode I made that statement. But probably referring to Meyers Briggs or something along that line.
Thanks!
What are you having installed? Camp X?
The LEDs are Gear Aid. You can also get very similar ones from Rock pals
@@4XPEDITION Yes - Camp X.
@@4XPEDITION Thanks!
Very cool! What truck are you putting it on?
