Know the Type: A Christmas Carol

Welcome back to our series celebrating authors through readings of their most famous works… And a Merry Christmas to all of you, from all of us at Wellbeing Merthyr!
As our gift to you all this year, we present Stave Five of Charles Dickens’ seminal Christmas work in its entireity. Oft adapted, imitated or used as inspiration for all kinds of media, it was an instant hit on its first publication - selling out in only five days (by Christmas Eve, no less). Thirteen editions were printed over the proceeding twelve months. Dickens went on to make a modest living by giving public readings of the story - in fact, the New York Public Library houses one of Dickens’ “prompt copies” of the book, with annotations and stage directions for public readings.
