  • Welcome back to our series celebrating authors through readings of their most famous works.
Today marks Holocaust Memorial Day, a day to reflect on, and remember, the victims and survivors of genocides across the world. First published in the original Dutch in 1947, "Het Achterhuis" (The Annex) is a first-hand account of Jewish 13-year-old Anne Frank's life in the Nazi-occupied Netherlands between 1942 and 1944. She and her family, along with another family, had to go into hiding in the upper rooms of the annex of her father Otto's company building - but were discovered on the 4th of August, and were sent to the Nazi's concentration camps. Anne died in Bergen-Belsen Camp, aged only 15.
Anne's diary has since been translated into 70 languages, and has sold over 35 million copies worldwide. It is an important and sincere account of a young girl's life in the midst of one of the most harrowing events of modern times.
