    I've been taking MTX for last 16 yrs.I'm 82 yrs of age.It has helped me in preventing deformities but for all those yrs I have experienced all sorts of side effects and for last 2yrs they are simply unbearable.The list of side effects is so big that it will require 2-3 full pages of paper.Now I feel better to die than living such a horrible life.

    I am taking 2 5 mg of methotrexate since 1996 and until last year I started problems with my mouth. It sores and causes pain. I take keetoprofen for the pain since 1984. Now I started with an itch and my dr. discontinued the keetoprofen. The hair loss is not much. What is causing the itch am not sure. My liver, kidney and blood tests are good. Thank God.

    Does methotrexate effect the ears? I started taking it again a few weeks ago and i have developed vertigo. Before when i took it yrs ago i had gotten an ear infection and was bleeding out of both ears. The only time ive ever had any issues with my ears was those 2 times and i was on methotrexate

    • @bjchealthAU
      @bjchealthAU  6 місяців тому

      Methotrexate (MTX), a common medication used to manage rheumatoid arthritis (RA), can have a variety of side effects, but its impact on the ears, specifically causing symptoms like vertigo or ear infections leading to bleeding, is not commonly highlighted in standard patient information or rheumatology guidelines. The experiences you've described with vertigo and ear issues while on methotrexate could be related, yet it's crucial to remember that individual reactions to medications can vary widely.
      Vertigo and ear infections are not typically listed as direct side effects of methotrexate in the context of RA treatment. However, the complexity of autoimmune diseases like RA and the systemic nature of methotrexate's action can lead to varied and sometimes unpredictable side effects in different individuals. Vertigo can be a manifestation of various underlying conditions, including issues with the inner ear, but is not widely recognized as a common side effect of methotrexate.
      The situation you're describing sounds like it could be an uncommon or atypical reaction to methotrexate. It's also possible that there might be another underlying cause for these symptoms that coincidentally occurred while you were taking methotrexate. Conditions affecting the ears, such as infections leading to bleeding, are usually not directly associated with methotrexate use.
      It's important to consult with your rheumatologist or a healthcare provider about any new or worsening symptoms, especially if you suspect they might be related to your medication. A healthcare professional can offer a thorough evaluation to determine whether your symptoms are indeed related to methotrexate or if another condition might be the cause. They can also advise you on the best course of action, which may include adjusting your medication or exploring other treatments to manage your RA while minimizing side effects.
      Patient education and clear communication with healthcare providers are key in managing RA and its treatment. If methotrexate is suspected to contribute to ear-related issues, alternative treatments for RA may be considered, depending on your overall health, the severity of your RA, and how you've responded to previous treatments. Always consult with your healthcare provider before making any changes to your medication regimen.

    I took methotrexate when I was a kid for Juvenile Arthritis from 6-12 years old. I took it intermittently. In other words I was not exposed to it steadily. And I wanted to ask can methotrexate cause any long term damage to the testes. If yes, do I have any risk for the damage even thought I was intermittently exposed to low dose methotrexate?

    Doctor, I've been prescribed folitrax 7.5mg for psoriasis treatment. Since methotrexate is an immunosuppressive medicine, is it recommended to take it during covid-19 time? Does it counteract with covid-19 vaccine? Is it safe to use before or after getting the vaccine shot?

    • @bjchealthAU
      @bjchealthAU  3 роки тому

      These are good questions. The general advice is that methotrexate is still safe to take during COVID-19. Data so far do not indicate any worse outcomes from COVID if you are taking methotrexate. Advice on taking methotrexate at the time of vaccination is evolving. I can recommend reading the guidelines at American College of Rheumatology: www.rheumatology.org/ for up to date information.

    I took 10 mg yesterday as the first dose for my RA treatment and I thought I was going to die. I felt foggy, I had excruciating headache, I was very cold and then very hot and I couldn't walk... I will NEVER take that poison again. I'll rather eat fish, broccoli and berries and do some yoga for my hand, which is still swollen and hurts, btw! Even if I die earlier, I'll live before that. I am having difficulty locating information about duration of mouth ulcers and cold sores with mtx along with oral thrush, i am only on my second dose and followup with my rheumatologist is not for another 2 weeks. Is this likely to occur every time i take a weekly dose or does the body acclimatise after several doses. I will stay my regime and treat the side effects til i see my doc but i would appreciate if you could let me know what i may expect. Thank you in advace.

    • @bjchealthAU

      Hi Lara, mouth ulcers from methotrexate will usually settle with a combination of taking extra folic acid, reducing the dose of methotrexate or switching folic acid to folinic acid supplementation. Generally mouth ulcers will continue unless you do one or a combination of these things. You should discuss the specifics of you situation with your treating doctor.
