Good god I’m so excited I found your channel. You are so well spoken, and the way you explain your views on each detail is just amazing!❤️ Can’t wait to watch the rest of your content!
Makeup was awful, you can really see how bad it is when she’s laying in the bed and there’s a close up of her mouth. You can literally see Mia underneath the pile of makeup.
Just discovered your channel. Well spoken, intelligent and with a love for movies. You know how to bring your own opinions into the review, without being rude or being a "know it all". Well done. Great job.
Maggie, you're in a kind of 70s mood yourself. Burnt orange top. Feels like incandescent yellow light. Focus not super sharp. Perfect. Plus you've put this film on my radar. Thanks.
My favorite character was actually Jenna Ortega. I really liked how her character was sort of the erotica archetype of the "innocent young church girl who gets seduced by the dangerous man." That was done really well. I love the way modern sensibilities were injected into this 70s era formula. The women have agency and the men aren't creepy manipulators. The conversation about sex and love felt really fresh and interesting. And the "innocent" characters aren't spared from the horrors that are usually reserved for the promiscuous and the druggies, which was a fun subversion. Mia Goth is definitely a star, and I love the choices she makes. She was excellent in Emma., which was probably the most mainstream of her films, but then she also does High Life and Suspiria and this; incredibly different, challenging, uncategorizable roles. I loved Chekhov's alligator. I wasn't a huge fan of the ending. I appreciate the subversive ideas of it, but I think it was lacking a catharsis that exploitation films usually have at least a bit of.
Yeah but I think the druggy cliche should stay . Listen being high and stoned is not the greatest thing in the world when you are running for your life. The innocent cliche I never cared for in slashers but the drug thing I always saw as realistic ( there's a reason killers in real life prey on addicts and alcoholics )
I am in complete agreement with you - it teeters between some arthouse film with meta-commentary and a larger sense of purpose in its tighter, almost claustrophobic atmosphere, and a horror film that leans heavily on its influences without having a real voice of its own. It only wants to pick either lane for any particular stretch it decides, and not in any concrete or direct way to make for an enthralling and modern stroke on a pastiche model. At least the alligator got some.
I loved this thing. Most fun A24 release so far imo, glad they are broadening into more comedic, less serious works (even though I've loved many of their other films).
Right, I agree with Deepfocuslens review, I was a bit underwhelmed by the film (mainly due to the hype), but still enjoyed it. I thought it was a refreshing change of tone from A24, though.
I feel like west has never gotten the respect for basically being first in the door the modern era of horror w/ house of the devil (like you said heavily skeletal and tension building). To me theres a direct line from it to It Follows to The VVitch to Ari Aster etc Also THANK YOU for actually saying theyre shooting a porn in this hahaha. Ive been rolling my eyes seeing all the reviewer's say 'adult film' or try and talk around it
Planning on seeing this tomorrow! I’ll watch your review after I’ve done my own but the trailer looks very refreshing. An original slasher with a clever premise is rare these days
Hey, you ever watched 'Under the Silver Lake' ? By David Robert Mitchell, fantastic director who wrote "It Follows".. it's low-key a truth bomb pretending to be nothing.. Very good film.
I love this movie. I feel that it was so anticlimactic (with how the hole conspiracy thing turned out) that most people will get disappointed. But I still hope Mitchell will get more chances and people will definitely respect his work. Because truly the man deserves it.
Maggie's reviews are so on-point and thoughtful. I love listening to her. Came right here after seeing the film last night! I loved it, and thought Brittany's character's death was freaking hilarious but I dunno how intentional that was. Anyone have thoughts?
Felt very similar. House of the Devil tested my patience and I found myself really really bored by it. But this had a lot of that patische novelty but was actively entertaining. I think I was more enthralled with it overall than you particularly with the narrative around the old couple which I really enjoyed but wholly agree it's a big step up for West.
Ultimately, it turned out to be a good film. The only downside, I’m my opinion, was that it was VERY slow going in the beginning. I understand the need to set things up, and to establish characters, but it was CRAWLING for a bit there. I’m not sure what to make of the prequel, with the Mia Goth twist, but I WILL be there to see it on day one.
I've enjoyed much of Ti West's output, so I'm interested. This sounds quite a bit like, of course, Texas Chainsaw, but also films like Tourist Trap, Mother's Day, and American Gothic.
I was about to watch a documentary over missing Faberge Eggs. But, I saw this thumbnail with this hot girl doing a review over a movie (X) I've been wanting to watch. I had to watch it, and leave a comment. Thanks for the upload.🌻💛
Repression, regret, and envy. These are the core themes of X. Cattle live uneventful and ultimately uniform lives until one day they’re gone. There’s a reason Wayne and his makeshift family drive around them. They are not cattle. They are the counterculture. Sure they have their flaws but deep down all of them are friendly, kind, and passionate. Hedonistic and making the most of their youth and vitality. Is it any coincidence the house they’re renting is full of warmth and light? Compared to the older couple who represent a repressed, regretful, and ultimately jealous society who only manage to find their jollies and bond by stifling, by “snuffing out,” the people who don’t represent their archaic values. It’s a culture war to them and they’re trying to preserve society. Only then does light, warmth, and passion emerge in their home. They enjoy the things the young people like. Clearly they can relate and possibly even bond. Jackson and Pearl’s husband are both war veterans, not so different from each other, right? But envy, they lash out in envy. The older couples’ repression leads to regret. My one issue with this movie is that it’s anvilicious when it doesn’t need to be. Bobby Lynne, Wayne, Jackson, and the older couple TELL us through dialogue the themes of the film which I stated above. Completely unnecessary when it does a decent job of conveying it via visual storytelling. It ends on a positive note. The counterculture strikes back. The boomers lose, the young people and their progressive values endure after a harrowing battle. Unfortunately a young adult who was beginning to experiment with her sexuality, lost her life in the process. Something all too familiar to our generation We millennials and Gen Z’ers desperately needed this movie in these trying times. Because it’s an allegory of what’s going on today. Nice homages to Psycho and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, too.
I had a similar reaction, though I don't think I was as entertained as you were. I would've liked the motivations of the old people to be explored more because there was a cool dichotomy being raised between young and old. But after a while, it feels as though it goes back into the typical "righteous people hate whores" thing that's been done to death. Characters weren't that well-defined or exciting to me. Still, there was more personality and intrigue to be found than what was given, for sure. I think this should've been a lot better than it was, but it gets lost in the gimmick of its style, as you said. So, yeah, I didn't care for it much. I don't know if I'll see the prequel movie shown in the post-credit scene, but we'll see.
Your reviews are stellar! I found this movie to be exactly what audience would expect to see from the trailer it was basically like that zack and Miri make a porno but for horror I also found the movie highly entertaining and overall well executed.
Thank you for your review!! Your thoughts have been the ones that reflect my feelings towards the movie the closest. It is a above average film but I was left wanting a bit more from it when it was all said and done. I liked it but didn't LOVE it like I see so many others mention
So entertaining and easily his best, always felt he was on the right path but never connected fully until X for me. West successfully mixed the best elements of Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the original) and early Friday the 13th slasher pacing without ripping off either. Edit: great contrast you brought up with Tarantino’s Death Proof, a favorite, and very true on it using convention then shaking it off but I think both these films remembered to keep the trashy/violent/camp overall and enough meta for those of us who love motivation and breaking the generic flow but agree Death Proof is high above X. Also a nice meditation on aging but it worked overall to me like a good low budget slasher even using the porn script (classic theme “farmers daughter”) for the oldskool horror hook (holiday horror, urban legends etc.) Finally felt like it perfectly channeled old horror without trying too hard and standing on its own. Really enjoyed it and love your reviews!!
I think my favourite character is Owen Campbell's 'RJ' as well.. Can't help but get a kick out of your mutual concurrence 🤓 1st time seeing you, now I'm off to check out your artwork!
When I first saw the trailer it was in a theater, I had no idea what it was. And in the opening moments I honestly thought it was the new Texas chainsaw massacre
X gon' give it to ya! I enjoyed the movie quite a lot. It was like a mix of Boogie Nights with the first half and Texas Chainsaw Massacre in the second. The cast did a solid job and I liked the usage of Landslide and Don't Fear the Reaper.
I’ve been a champion of Ti West for awhile, while I don’t always think he makes the best movies his cinematic aesthetic is one all to himself. A sort of love letter to 70s filmmaking. Similar to Tarantino in a way I guess.
I love the Ti West movie The innkeepers I'm not saying it's groundbreaking or the best movie ever but I watched it a lot of times and I really enjoy it it's actually mellow and low-key and I was generally scared the first couple times I saw it
It promised me “one goddamn fucked up horror picture” and it delivered that for me. It’ll probably be in my top 10, maybe even top 5 by the end of the year. Good review, even if we disagree a bit on it.
I honestly felt I got a little more than I was expecting. I expected from digestible fun schlock which I delivered on but I wasn't expecting there to be substance and I actually think it delivered in spades in that regard.
I've watched a lot of reviews on this movie and I agree with your take the most. I was really looking forward to X but I agree that the character motivations and themes were half assed, and that the movie overall needed more focus. I saw they were trying to prove a point about how sexuality is acceptable and attractive with young people but horrifying with old people (even the consensual scene between husband and wife), but it didn't really go deeper than that. I could also tell the old lady was in makeup and I half expected her to be de-aged after stealing the young characters' youths (or something supernatural like that) but no, she just stayed in that makeup the whole time for no reason so it was honestly distracting. Plus the deaths were really weak, overly convenient, and even nonsensical. The gator one was straight out of a B movie. I really wanted to love this movie but I think the script needed a few more rounds of drafts first. Still going to see the prequel Pearl when it comes out, hopefully that one's better.
I like that she is double cast for this. It was a fun flick. So many lame horrors out. Especially anything pg-13. Curious if they’ll bounce between the prequel and where X left off. You’re cute FYI
X is what I wanted Death Proof to be. An exploitation pastiche that - unlike Tarantino's film - understands the films that it's paying homage to enough to meaningfully comment on/subvert them. This took more risks than Death Proof and didn't contradict itself like that film did.

Eli Roth needs to stay away from movie making. Nothing good ever came from him. A24 surely has better things to do than to give him a big risky shot. Too much risk, too little reward.
I’m sorry I found the conversation about who they’re fucking in the film industry and all this other crap I found that kind of boring until I got to Kurt Russell some of the conversations were not very interesting it’s still my least favorite Tarantino film I like it but I don’t love it not like I love from dusk till dawn

Insanely terrible. I felt like I was watching somebody in a rubber mask on scooby doo

The makeup was extremely distracting and you could see coming from a mile that there was a reason for it. They should've hired an older woman.

Jenna acting berserk in the end was literally laughable if was just so ridiculous
The catharsis was the old woman getting her head squished by Mia Goth. That was plenty enough for me.

Cool review and great Keith Richards art portrait on the website. Just seen it and had to say that's awesome.
I thought this was great. But not on the level of House of the Devil. That's a masterpiece to me.
Turns out more of it will be explored as there apparently is a prequel in the works to find out more about the old couple.
Mia Goth is amazing she reminds me a lot of Shelley duvall during the 70s , she has that uncommon face that fits great for creepy movies.

This is what Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2022 should’ve been
It's better than any of the modern chainsaw sequels, that's for sure.
Kind of an unrelated question but have you ever talked about Risky Business in any of your videos?
Just as you said rev in the engine, my neighbour started revving up his motorcycle

Eli Roth needs to make an A24 horror film instead of doing mainstream Hollywood movies, wasn’t a fan of Death Wish or House with Clocks in it.
seriously! honestly Eli isn't a great director tbh, he does have great homages to old school horror films though I'll give him that.
Eli Roth needs to stay away from movie making. Nothing good ever came from him. A24 surely has better things to do than to give him a big risky shot.
Too much risk, too little reward.
Oh yeah, boycotting the Oscars tonight for the umpteenth year in a row!,😁
I’m sorry I found the conversation about who they’re fucking in the film industry and all this other crap I found that kind of boring until I got to Kurt Russell some of the conversations were not very interesting it’s still my least favorite Tarantino film I like it but I don’t love it not like I love from dusk till dawn
It's hyped
Great review.
I enjoyed this except the killing became a conveyor belt of who's next. Overall really liked it.
Gotta watch this
