Having had two colonoscopies, the worst part is always the prep. The greatest part is the actual procedure itself. It's like getting a great night's sleep in an hour.

having gone thru 2 myself - I never got a over the counter laxitive, its always some industrial grade stuff that when it kicks in you have to hang on to the toilet. Afterwards I always feel shakey for several hours after - its not so much a good time.

@@tomr3422 Years ago I had one and had to drink this 4 liter jug of a baking soda type of liquid that you had to drink all of, one glass every 10 minutes, in order for it to completely clean you out so they could see when they put the camera up there. I literally had to force myself like I never have before to drink that last cup! I didn't want to see another glass of water for a long time after enduring that ! Have no idea what the procedure is these days? 😅

I had one a few years ago and the the laxative powder they gave me was absolutely awful. I've never felt so sick in my life but of course there is nothing left in my stomach I couldn't be sick and everything that was coming out the other end was already gone. Sadly the colonoscopy wasn't any better as in the UK they will not use general anesthetic unless in exceptional cases. So I'm given the choice of sedation or gas and air. Me stupidly thinking how bad could it be choose gas and air and I will never ever do that again it was agony.

@@dankelly5150 Sounds like you had the Peglyte mixture. Believe it or not, it's actually better than the new stuff, at least in my experience. Sucked drinking the huge jug, but it was super effective at its job.
With the new stuff, you have to drink a fraction of the liquid, but I found I urinated most of it out rather than..you know.

If you have a history of cancer within your family Doctors now recommend having the procedure at 40 (My father being a stubborn old school guy never had a colonoscopy if he had he may still be alive) had it done at 41 it’s actually not bad overall except not eating for 24hrs can be rough (Only real negative was having a bad migraine during the procedure once i was able to eat something felt ok) It’s probably one of the safest things within the hospital once you get hit with that general anesthesia it’s unreal you wake up in the future……

I have a colonoscopy done about two weeks ago.
It was nowhere as near as complicated as Jim's was.
    I stopped eating on Monday.
They gave me a 1-gallon jug with powder in it that I filled with water.
    I drank half at 6 p.m.
And the other half at 6 a.m.
Didn't drink anything 3 hours before the procedure.
Got dressed, laid on the table.
They shot anesthesia into my IV.
I wasn't knocked out. I was awake and felt really good with no pain.
I was able to watch the screen and was even helping them get the polyps. 😂
They got 5 polyps total out of me. No cancer.
And the wife drove me home.

After a yr of chemo, now cancer free, thank God! My cousin, got hers done. Dr found 2 polyps. 1 came back cancerous. Further examination, spread to her lymph nodes. Had 1ft of her intestine removed.....And myself. Got mine done last month. Dr found 7 polyps w the biggest one being 35mm. Removed 6 of them, all NON Cancerous! Thank God! Have to see a specialist to have the "big one" removed, and that sent off for testing...The drink prep IS the worst part of it. BUT ask your Dr about pill-form!! Fluid was like drinking windshield washer fluid... horrible but at least it is done and all was fine. We all need to take better care of ourselves. Lost my brother at 43 to metastatic colon cancer. True story: The last thing I remember as I was going under from the sedative was the sound of Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now" playing on the radio in the procedure room.

I hate to say it, but they are a neccessary evil. We found out in the middle of January that my dad has colon cancer that has made its way into his intestines. His dr tried for years to get him to have a colonoscopy, I wish he would have.

I have crohns disease. I'm 34. I've had 5 colonoscopies in the last 4 years with a 6th in 3 years. Actual procedure is zero problem to me. The prep, it's always the prep. Just so much to drink and your butthole burns.

The farting afterwards is weird. "Im supposed to what? Fart?" I was literally in a recovery room with about 4 people, and it was just a symphony of flatulence. The preparation for a Colonoscopy is bad. The ending? The most bizarre, surreal thing I've experienced to this day.

Had my first at 47 the day after my birthday. Prep is way worst the not eating part. But its best to do it on Monday so you can perp Sunday when you don't have much to do.
