  • Sean McLain has been in love with aviation since he was in 3rd grade, and when he was just over 12 years old, his dream came true. On December 29, 2010 Sean took his very first flying lesson out of Wiley Post Airport. 4 years later, on his 16th birthday he flew solo for the first time!

Congratulations! You should talk more though. Test brakes. Shoulder harnesses are a memory item. Clear left, clear right. Mental checklists, speak them out. Check static RPM as soon as you apply power. I've encountered low rpm during take off roll, and good thing I noticed, cause that airplane wasn't gonna fly. Remember engines don't quit suddenly, they'll usually die slowly, but you need to pay attention to the indications and read them aloud religiously even when nobody is watching. During roll, it's good to call airspeed alive, 40kts engine green, 65 knots rotate. 500ft Vy... etc. It will help transitioning to more complex airplanes easier. Again, congratulations. You're lucky to have a video. My first solo was in 2002 and all I have are the memories of what could be one of the most important days of my life.

Isn't the RG a complex aircraft? Can you do your first solo in a complex aircraft in US?
    Nice flying btw!

Yes, the Cutlass (172RG) is complex. With the appropriate endorsements, it is legal to fly solo. You can also do the same with High Performance aircraft.

So students can fly complex aircraft during their education? I am impressed - you need to be a certified pilot with a complex rating to fly it here in Europe.

Benedikt Freifallspoiler Students CAN fly complex and or high performance aircraft during their education in the United States. When it comes to the individuals first solo, they must receive the appropriate endorsements for the particular aircraft.
