    As an update this engine started making metal at 101hrs and 11mos of operation due to a failed tappet despite meticulous maintenance care. Central Cylinder honored their warranty and rebuilt the engine. They took good care of me thank God because I was not ready to do this again... Many kudos to Dave and George. Only thing I'm not fond of is the warranty doesn't restart which as a person could imagine would make them a bit nervous... Just means I gotta fly like crazy to prove all is well!

    A test club doesn't do much if the air isn't directed into the cylinders from the top, the tappet failure is one of many seen and described in this video

    are we looking at a front facing, cold air sump rig? Nice looking engine.

    Running without ducting / baffling to ensure correct airflow over cylinders for cooling not a good idea..

    Hi folks, nice video; How long time, (hours?) should a motor run on a test stand like this, after being rebuild ? Thanks for sharing, oscar;

      nuil501 this is the first startup after major overhaul. We replaced everything but the crankshaft (including engine case). Engine had around 1300hrs on it when I bought it, we think it must have sat for a bit... thanks for watching!

    Tell us about the HP that engine is producing, the HP/weight ratio, and the performance you are getting with it in the Cardinal.

      cessna369 this engine is stated to make 200HP as far as the other parameters we get great performance from this engine and are happy with the power. Thanks for watching!

    Hard to believe this horizontally opposed four is larger than the 302 V8 in my Ford.
    Are these engineered for low end torque, power up top or a
    blend of the two?
    I am a complete novice to piston engines for airplane applications.

      Setup for low end torque, max normally operating RPM is around 2700. In cruise, RPM is around 2300-2400. Thanks for watching!

      It is good to note that the engine is a reliable direct drive setup, no gearbox. So RPM is limited to typical prop limits (around 2700 RPM for typical airplane applications, and 3300 RPM for Helicopter use) . Despite the limitations, HP to weight is quite good, and overall thermal efficiency is superb. Lycoming BSFC numbers are as low as 0.38Lb fuel per HP hour in cruise flight. There is a reason this design remains common, it really works. Piston ring swept area and combustion chamber surface area are efficiently lower with large displacement cylinders. Air cooling operates at 400f, reducing cooling drag compared to the 200f of a liquid cooled engine's radiator (due to high differential temps) AND less thermal loss during the combustion event.

    So, I’ve been wondering… if you decreased the compression ratio, could you run one of these on (ethanol-free) autogas?
    …I may or may not be thinking of swapping one of these into a car.

    Do you happen to have a video of your engine test cell? If it was fabricated, or was it bought? I'm looking to fabricate one and was wondering specs
