      Yeah, it’s always a bummer seeing all the plans be made and pictures and video from the event. But I’ll get there one day sometime or another.

      So last week I got a couple hours for my biannual (holy cow time flies). I’ll be doing some plane camping for the first time this weekend-I’m very excited about this.
      We’ll see if I get a little channel worthy content from this trip.
      Need to get some time in a 7! Just to really dangle the carrot.

    You need to install counter sunk screws for the whip comm antenna.

      I may have edited that part out--but for sure, you're absolutely right. Somewhere there's footage of me griping about "another Stein order." 100 degree countersink stainless hardware was the origination of that gripe. Was just using some #8s to hold it in place for the time being. "Hardware not included" strikes again...
      Locknuts on the fin will also be replaced with stainless nylock nuts.

    Not sure of your comm logic, but: I use comm1 as my primary -- talk to tower, center, approach, etc. and comm2 as my secondary --- AWOS (etci), ground, fingers, clearance. Line-of-sight logic would therefore place comm1 as the belly antenna and comm2 aa the dorsal antenna. Something to think about...

    • @RyanFlysPDX
      @RyanFlysPDX  6 місяців тому +1

      I tried to think this one through. I figured while I'm on the ground I'd be on Com1--therefore straight antenna for better LoS to tower/ground, AWOS, departure. In flight, I thought I might be using Com2 for weather etc. at destination, where additional range of belly antenna would come in handy.
      I'm not sure if the logic here is going to pan out, but I do have enough loop in both leads to easily switch them. This is where my lack of practical experience requires I build in some plan b options!
      Thanks for sharing what works for you--likely that's where I'll need to be.

      @@RyanFlysPDX just sounds like you and I use comm1 and comm2 for opposite purposes; so you should be good.. Idea was to use the dorsal antenna on the ground to talk to people above you and the ventral while in the air to talk to people below you.

    Thanks for your video. You mentioned the antenna was a PIA. I never seen anyone do this but can the doublers be installed to the skin before attached to the plane?

    • @RyanFlysPDX
      @RyanFlysPDX  6 місяців тому

      Don’t forget, I just love complaining…
      But that’s a good question. Most of the PIA was actually cut from the video and was trying to use the pop-rivet dimple tool in that tight location. Took about an hour. Going your route would avoid this.
      That said, I’d think it would be exceptionally hard to have the confidence in placement when the skin is off the plane. Things are so much more clear now than they would have been back then.
      Could I have accomplished this. Probably not. Could someone who’s a bit more adept at this, and maybe has one under their belt. Probably.
