Rancid Fish Oil----Is it A Real Problem.
Fish oil is susceptible to oxidation due to its highly unsaturated structure. Once fish oil starts to oxidize, a notable fishy smell and taste emerges.
With increased oxidation there will be lower amounts of EPA/DHA and also the negative benefits of consuming oxidized fish oil can be increased burping, indigestion and diarrhea.
There are 3 measurements of fish oil oxidation
Peroxide value (PV)
p-Anisidine value (pAV)
Total oxidation (TOTOX) = 2 PV + pAV
**TOTOX is not a validated measure of oxidation because of a wide variation of pAV.
**pAV is secondary oxidation which can be skewed by certain colors and flavoring. pAV value is better in the raw material stage of testing.
PV is the only validated for primary oxidation in a finished product.
When the peroxide value is between 30 and 40 milliequivalents/kg, a rancid taste is noticeable.
Fullscript tested 30 of the products testing for primary oxidation below 10 meq/kg (NSF ANSI)
22 out of 30 tested were below the Global Organization for EPA/DHA, voluntary standard of 5 meq/kg
Metagenics SPM Active PV 3.3 meq/kg
Designs for Health OmegAvail Hi-Po PV 1.8 meq/kg
Vital Nutrient Ultra Pure Fish Oil 700 3.8 meq/kg
Microbiome Labs MegaMarine 3.6 meq/kg
Pure Encapsulations O.N.E. Omega 1.7 meq/kg

I use Nordic naturals fish oil. After opening, I store it in the refrigerator.
I sell that "Nordic Naturals" DHA Extra on eBay...I am the LOWEST price and have a one time ability to do so until I run out ..I think I have 40 or so left ..all within date till end of 2026 or so .
My family financial situation took a bad turn and I am selling everything we have left in the store at a loss. I even included shipping on every supplement out of desperation to get as much money as soon as possible... Before long I will be listing all kinds of stuff from the house next . . .
Look for a seller name with 1 in it and aqua and man.... Probably can't post a link or anything without being doxxed
Good video/topic but few (important) things missing off the top of my head 1) The Oxidation level of these products probably isn't a constant (unless it's a mean/average of many, many different samples from different batches/production dates). Consistency should be the key, but we all know how that goes 2) How about comparison between capsules filled with oil and just oil itself...I heard the oil is better and doesn't really continue to oxidate until you open the bottle, whereas oil in capsules oxidize at much higher rare even before opening the bottle 3) And a quick reminder to refrigerate the product and consume by "best by" date based on servings. 4) Tastewise I personally prefer cod liver oil, much milder, and has Vitamin A and D as well, although slightly lower levels of epa/dha.
Nordic Natural is a good brand also and I use the Arctic Cod Liver oil from them.
Due to these concerns I ve stopped taking fish oil capsules.
Now I eat a can of sardines in olive oil instead.
Olive oil is also prone to oxidation in the exact same way as the fish oil. Pure Extra Virgin does have the lowest oxidation rates of all the unsaturated plant oils if i remember correctly. You can get sardines in water to ensure this does not happen.
That was a great reference for all of us. Thank you.
My favourite fish oil product is Neuro 1000 from Metagenics.
Thank you so much, Dr. Sung. Dr. Rhonda Patrick has created tons of content on the importance of having a high omega-3 index and so I’ve been pounding down the expensive Rosita brand of raw cod liver oil but I’ve always wondered about oxidation because it is STRONG tasting (I have to take it with oil of oregano added to get it down). This short video is GOLDEN info. Thank you so much. PS…I’ve raised my omega-3 index to 6.81 and intend to get to 10 like the average level of the Japanese who live in the blue zone. Thank you for all that you do.
Thank you so much.
I stopped taking fish oil supplements and my Blood Glucose levels dropped from mid 6's to mid 5's....I eat fish 3 times a week so hopefully that's sufficient..
Fish supplement was elevating your blood glucose? 🤔 Did it have some fruit flavoring?

Why don't they use tiny amounts of astaxanthin, Vitamin E, Vitamin C etc. to prevent lipid peroxidation?
Can you please do a video on POTS ?
Go with Rosita's, Jigsaw Health or FIQ Cod Liver Oil. The rest is rancid bunk.
theres Krill oil for alternative, that doesnt go rancid
Was “Nature Made” tested? That brand is found everywhere, so it’d be good to know the result
can you do another video on fish oil? compare triglyceride vs ethyl ester types. Rhonda Patrick says that triglyceride based is better bioavailability and may cross the BBB in people with APOE4. But it is hard to find and expensive. Thank You.

Fermented fish oil can't get rancid though?? Like Green Pastures brand?
I live in Mexico now and im afraid my fish oil might come in rancid because of the heat during delivery. Should I be worried?
I can’t afford to take expensive brand😢
Eat some fatty fish.
❤

Where are you finding the PV values reported? I checked the links you provided, but didn't find them there.

I always hear about the benefits of fish oil but it's there a reason why someone may feel worse (mental sluggishness) taking it, even if it is a high quality brand?
Try stopping it for a week. If you still feel the same it could be something else. Long Covid, fibromyalgia, etc.
Eat brain it so rich in Omega 3.
A 4-ounce serving of beef brain contains about 1 gram of omega-3 fatty acids . This is a good source of omega-3s, considering that the recommended daily intake for adults is 250-1,000 mg per day. Beef brain is also a good source of protein, vitamin B12, and choline.
