What if Jean Michel Jarre did a Doctor Who Theme?

- Nearly three years ago, I asked "What if Vangelis did a Doctor Who theme?" Now I dare to ask ... what if one of the other greats of electronic music did one too?
I tried to do as accurate a recreation as I could of JMJ's style circa Oxygene or Équinoxe. Synths used were: the Kontakt 5 Player's CR-78 drum machine, Rhythmus Korg Minipops 7 Emulator, Arturia's ARP 2600 and Prophet V VSTis, SuperWave Equinoxe, EMS Synthi A and DVI Mellotron.
Doctor Who is a trademark of the BBC. Doctor Who Theme composed by Ron Grainer, originally arranged by Delia Derbyshire and the Radiophonics Workshop. This video has no official connection to Jean Michel Jarre.

Apparently JMJ himself has said in interviews that one of his earliest inspirations was the Doctor Who theme.
If you can find the citation for this it would be awesome!!!
Funny, several of those kinds of bands were inspired by Doctor Who, such as Pink Floyd.

Small world, I wonder what a Pink Floyd cover for Doctor Who would sound like🤔
@@marsandcobblesproductions3501 I mean, they've at least referenced the theme in a few of their songs.
@@everettrailfan
I wonder what Ultravox version would sound like if they'd do one?
Absolutely Freakin' WOW. As a lover of Dr. Who and Jean Michel Jarre, this is a fantastic mix of a great theme, and the ever so often second part of the theme makes my senses tingle with joy. Thanks so much. More, More, More x
I really love the multi-channel manipulation of the rhythm. It nails the Jarre feeling perfectly.
I always wondered what a Giorgio Moroder version would sound like
Something similar to "Midnight Express" probably.
Den Saku
Or the Scarface theme, since he wrote that as well
In 1978, probably a bit like this.

These versions of Doctor Who Themes are very very cool. Other ideas, if you're interested, and you have time... Chemical Brothers, Aphex Twin, Daft Punk, Skrillex, Harold Faltermeyer. Also versions of the Terminator Theme would be interesting.
Good choices. I'd add Jan Hammer (Miami Vice theme) & definitely Mike Oldfield to the list.
*Daft Punk & Joseph Trapanese for a TRON Legacy flavour (or just Joe for TRON Uprising flavour)!
Also 808 State & Ozric Tentacles.
@@welshcowboy306 I've just uploaded a DW theme arranged in the style of Crockett's Theme / Miami Vice.
For the longest time I honestly thought he already had (seriously, how can anybody listen to the fantastic Sylvester McCoy era theme and not think of JMJ)?
...we have a runner-up for my fave! You're good, man.
As you probably know, when John Nathan-Turner took over as producer, he used JMJ as an example of the direction he wanted the music to go.
This is pure genius! Along with the other "what if ... Dr who" themes. So well captured the style. Awesome
Wow ! How have we never heard a JMJ version of this iconic tune. His music suits it so much
WHAT IF BRAD FIEDEL DID A DOCTOR WHO THEME?
(I'm talking Brad Fiedel in his prime. Terminator 1-era.)
So more synth, less orchestra...
And Fright-night.....
What if Harold Faltermeyer did a Doctor Who Theme?
What if Giorgio Moroder did a Doctor Who Theme?
What if GeorgeCMusic did a Doctor Who Theme?
I regret not having found out about this before... but I'm glad I did. I've been listening to all your versions so far, and all -i can say is.. You are a genius. Respect from Chile!
you know I actually wouldn't mind if jean Michel jarre did do a doctorwho theme. as honestly just from hearing this it gives an idea of what it could sound like, and what with me having been a fan of jmj for most of my young life into my 20s I still even now love his music. and I think he would do an absolute smashing job at create a doctor who theme
Oh absolutely, as I get older the more I get bored of Murray Gold's takes on the theme. Someone like Jarre would do a wonderfully alien sounding arrangment. I've always said that, much like the opening titles should look like you're tripping balls, the Doctor Who theme should sound like you've accidentally tuned into an alien radio station.
GeorgeCMusic i agree mate I mean I liked how the original programs began i.e with the time vortex and the doctors faces in the middle. now if they could do that and have Jarre do a theme to it.. I think that would be great!
This is my jam!
+GeorgeCMusic
To be honest we might as well just start a petition to make this the theme
Murray gold is just dull with that ridiculous fanfare that drowns the baseline
@@ssp6186 I think it actually kind of worked, especially for the reboot which was a very triumphant period in the history of the show, especially with the Derbyshire stems in there. However, yeah, it's time for a real alien-sounding theme again, which I think we're definitely going towards, especially with Akinola's version.
This "What if JMJ?" interpretation of the theme actually sounds believable, I could picture it being in the actual show during the late Tom Baker- Peter Davidson era.
Since people are asking for different interpretations of the theme, I start to wonder "What if Paul Hardcastle did a Doctor Who theme?"
Sylvester McCoy's Doctor would have liked this.
Can imagine it
Sounds like there's a bit of "Good Vibrations" in there as well; the Beach Boys may have used similar instruments as this song was released not long after Doctor Who...
It would be incredible if each of these artists could've done a theme for each of the doctors.
Nifty! Fascinating what if. Massive Jean Michel Jarre fan and Dr Who. What a combination. The visuals are truly amazing.
Just brilliant! Love Jean Michel Jarre, sounds just like him, congratulations.
Fantastic !! .. sounds just like a Jarre masterpiece - Oxygene / Equinoxe era.
I love the "middle 8" section!
Apparently Andrew Cartmel stated that Jarre was considered to compose an arrangement of the _Doctor Who_ theme for Season 27, but this plan was dropped when the show was cancelled at the end of Season 26. I'd say this is a pretty good way of imagining what could have been.
i like this, much like i enjoyed the "in the style of vangelis" version, and who is next to put a spin on Ron Grainer's eerie dr who theme, i wish it to be Gary Numan, circa Tubeway army years to his awesome album of telekon.
Check out Matt Jessup's Telekonised Dr Who theme
This theme would have suited the later Tom Baker years with the Howell theme being introduced with Peter Davison...
I like the Oxygene references especially noticeable just before the Middle 8.
Bravo! A worthy treatment and very much in the style of JMJ!
Wow! That was astonishing! Thank you so much for this! Exactly hit the mark - If you ever do a cd I'd buy it! :)
BBC this has just got to be used on Dr Who, this as the theme and David tennant back as the Dr, I may just watch it again!!!!!! Never watched it since he left!!!!!!
so faith full to Jarre and classic who themes! well done, sir!
So much work must have gone into this. Awesome job, as a fan of both, I loved listening to it :-)
Absolute briljant!
This version and the John Carpenter versions are the best. Most in to the sound of the artist and Dr. Who theme!!
Its good how you kept it very Analog sounding without over emphasising the Doctors them and making a good Hybrid of both Artists. Excellent and very clever.
Very nicely put together, a thumbs up from me. I'll be picking up the new Jarre album this weekend, I've read some great reviews on it. Nice touch with the 'Magnetic Fields' Doctor/Tom at the end too.
+Adam Darren
the new Album is fantastic, can't wait for the second part next year.
This is your best version to date. So J-M Jarre! Just love it.
Dude this is incredible. Just incredible.
But, what if the Pet Shop Boys did the Doctor Who theme?
Now that I would like to see
Erasure were asked by JNT in '92, but had to decline as they were on tour. Instead the Cybertech version was used for Dimensions In Time.
Keff McCulloch's version has a lot of Pet Shop Boys style in it!
Yo, that logo is fucking sick
Love the middle 8 in there :) The whole is just superb! Well done.
wonderful work! enjoyed it a lot
Man, this is spot on. Very well done!
Have heard that this was supposed to be Series 27 title music in 1990 if the series didn't got axed in 1989.
Clever chap ! Very much enjoyed this - especially 2.28 - nice !
Very accurate! This is one of my favorite dr Who themes
He would definitely love this
When I first heard this soundtrack (with no video or artist attribution) I thought: OMG, has Jarre recorded his interpretation of the Doctor Who theme? It’s an awesome job.
Excellent. You captured Jarre's style really well.
What if John Carpenter did a Doctor Who theme?
What if Lady Gaga did a Doctor Who theme?

The Wanderer How about what if Linkin Park did a Doctor Who theme? (RIP Chester Bennington)
Denton It would be shite.
+eldospinks
It wasn't. Lol
brilliantly done
Works for me. I could imagine this being a thing. Nice job on the remix!
This is absolutely amazing 👨🏻🚀 well done
That actualy sounds pretty good.
again absolutely brilliant !!!!
I'm hearing echoes of Peter Howell.... one of my favourites as a Composer of Doctor Who music!
These are awesome!!!! Subscribed
Great effort, and video too
Insanely clever and honourable to both sources. Almost as good as the version playing in my head since 1976...
Damn... It sounds very muck like a Jarre work xD
Excellent work!
perfect in every way.
just stunning....
I have enjoyed your versions of the Dr who themes this one was very good.
Spot on! The Oxygène style suits the Dr Who theme nicely.
subtle perfection
OMFG, just OMFG JEAN MICHEL JARRE I LOVE ❤️ YOU XXXXXX
Amazing!!..I really listen to Jean-Michel Jarre!..Your music makes me dream, you've done a great job!!

What if Yellow Magic Orchestra did the Doctor Who theme?
THIS GODLIKE JOB,I AM FROM FRANCE SO I KNOW JEAN MICHEL JARRE,SERIOUSLY,THIS IS VERY GOOD
Excellent job!
Perfect blend! Spot on.
man. this is just brilliant. wish I could make something like that
Brilliantly done, sounds great. I wish someone would do a what if Mike Oldfield done the Doctor Who theme next.
Wasn't convinced by your Vangelis cover, I didn't think it sounded Vangelis-y at all. ;) This, however, almost sounds like something Jarre could have done. :)
Thank you. I have been thinking about revisiting at some point the Vangelis one now that I have Arturia's CS-80 virtual synth...
Well, guess you got yourself a new subscriber, then. Can't be missing that. ;)
GeorgeCMusic I'd like to hear a Prodigy version :-D
Fantastic! Thanks so much for this! :-D
This is remarkable!!!! CONGRATULATIONS!
This is amazing!
What if Dali/Manish & Daria Kawashima (the people who did the original Sailor Moon theme) did a Doctor Who theme..? Strangely this could be interesting since I found the Doctor Who theme, particularly the McCoy-era version, matches well with the Sailor Moon opening title sequence when it's the same length.
Love it! Excellent!
Very magical
Dr Who The JMJ Oxygène Mix
Excellent, thank you :)
LOVE IT !
That great to know.
Love this !
Thanks for this. Shows the class of the original with a bit of a twist.
I love this !
Quite the lovely series! I hope you'll do more and if I may offer a few suggestions:
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
Yes or Rick Wakefield
Chemical Brothers
Glitch Mob
and a Bart & Baker electro-swing remix. :-)
And while they aren't electronic music by any means, I'd be curious to hear a Jethro Tull version. :-)
fantastic!!
We need "What if Gary Numan did a Doctor Who theme"
yeah, i agree, and i know where ideas for the arrangement can come from.... "THE PLEASURE PRINCIPAL" album
YES WOT GREAT WORK YOU DUN MAN AND SO COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLTWO
Great stuff 😜😜👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Very good!
Superb.
What if Jean-Jacque Perrey did a 3rd Doctor Who Theme?
I wonder what a Oblivion version would sound like? Or a Apotheosis, maybe? This is cool!
verry nice done ;)
Brilliant. This is what the theme music should be like!
It sounds so doctor Who,I think jmj would make a fantastic dr who theme
I only just discovered this collection. It's awesome! The visuals are almost as good as the music.
If you don't mind going back into musical history, I wonder if you'd care to give a try with the styles of Herbie Hancock (somewhere between Chameleon and Rockit), Gary Wright, or even Rahsaan Roland Kirk. (bond -- the electric string quartet -- might be an interesting take too.)
Veeeery Goooood , keep moving..
Brilliant!
I love Jean Michel Jarre, and this is exactly his style. Brilliant.
