What if Tangerine Dream did a Doctor Who Theme?

- Yet another "What If..." Here's how I image German electronic group Tangerine Dream might have done a cover of the Doctor Who theme, taking particular inspiration from their albums Force Majeure (1979), Exit (1981) and Hyperborea (1983).

Doctor Who is a trademark of the BBC. Doctor Who Theme composed by Ron Grainer, originally arranged by Delia Derbyshire and the Radiophonics Workshop. This has no official connection to Tangerine Dream.
What if the Eagles did a Doctor Who theme? Considering that the opening theme for the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" was done by them...
THGTG theme was the Eagles song Journey of the Sorcerer. It wasn't specifically made for the show.
The "Doctor Who" theme cries out for a sweet banjo line...
I keep finding myself coming back to this, because it is (in my opinion) THE definition of a perfect Doctor Who theme
Suggestions enough, pale: 'New Musik'-one, "Depeche Mode'-one, 'Patrick O'Hearn'-one, 'YMO'-one, 'Steve Roach'-one, 'Björk'-one, 'Plone'-one, an 'Ultimae Records-label'-one, 'Ozric Tentacles'-one, 'Jimi Tenor'-one, 'Stereolab'-one, 'Klaus Schulze'-one, 'Laurie Anderson'-one, 'Steve Reich'-one, 'Philip Glass'-one, 'Gary Numan'-one, 'Clara Mondshine'-one, 'Art Of Noise'-one, 'Serge Blenner'-one, 'Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark'-one, 'Ludovico Einaudi'-one and finally 'Your Own'-one ☺☺☺
Depeche-Mode doing Doctor Who? Now THAT I would pay to see.
ME TOO...it 'could' be done, I guess!
No Philip Glass one - or if you do..tell us what 3 min part to tune into out of the 3 hour composition.
J*mike*J William orbit, Matmos or Arca Bjork?
Ditto for Klaus Schulze...somehow I doubt there'd be time for the actual episode.
Fire starter, 3”o’clock high, the keep, background images to name a few. Have you been going though my dvd collection? Lol
I'd love to hear a "What If Wendy Carlos Did Doctor Who" theme!
it's WALTER Carlos
It's Wendy, actually.
RealKull Walter is Wendy now assuming you knew about the “transformation.”

This is genuinely amazing! You perfectly captured the spirit of Tangerine Dream, here
What if Mike Oldfield did a Doctor Who theme? Always wondered about that one :)
Can't say I know enough about Tangerine Dream to appreciate this.
If all the others I have played are as close as them, then I'm missing out on this one..
Its very very accurate
As an avid fan of Tangerine Dream... this was awesome!! Stumbled onto these videos and have listened to most.... JMJ and Vangelis... spot on! But so far I have to say you NAILED John Carpenter version! Well done! Looking forward to hearing some more!
Ah, I love you for this. Didn't imagine I'd find much of anything when I typed "Tangerine Dream doctor who theme", but here I am. Relatively perfect timing, too.
I really really like this arrangement totally captures both Tangerine Dream and Doctor Who perfectly.
AKA "Love on a Real Tardis"
LOL yeah.
I love all your versions of Ron Grainer's original theme. This one's really trippy. Keep em comming!
I loved their The Keep soundtrack..... Thank you for doing this!
So very, very good. Fantastic, as the Ninth Doctor might say.
Now this is really something. So slick and synth, it makes me wonder what the theme would have evolved into had the BBC continued the series with McGann's Doctor into the late-90s. Jolly impressive stuff.
Just one question- no doubt inspired by my current 'recommendations'- what if Pink Floyd (ala Syd Barrett) did the theme, Prog Rock style?
You mean Griffiths
Eh, maybe. Personally I would have expected Griffiths' Doctor to be a bit more gothic and mercurial than this tune is, but I suppose the Beeb could have gone with this type of style.
Griffiths according to all sources i can find would be replacement for Sylvester McCoy
I'd personally be more interested to hear a theme in the style of Waters/Gilmour-era Pink Floyd.
I just think that the surreal psychedelia of Barrat (becoming fairly scary at some points!) would fit the mad howlaround better than the world-weary lyrics of Waters and co., but I do like Vashta Nerada's cover. It was near uncannily excellent.
There was one particular tune they did for the soundtrack of THE SORCERER (don't remember which track it was) that always reminded of the Doctor Who theme every time I heard it.
Who votes daft punk next?
me! :)
I was going to suggest it, if noone else did.
@Super BeerGeek Already done. ua-cam.com/video/t7bdxX6uMss/v-deo.html
YES!
Only if they’re really playing at the trash fence at Burning Man 🤪
Greetings! I am new to your channel Your what if Dr. Who themes are just fabulous. TD is one of my inspirations, so this one has to be my favorite. Take care, new sub!
this is very much TD - good job ! - recognised a bit of Firestarter theme in there too ...
Harold Faltermeyer would make the best Dr. Who theme ever.
I think you are INCREDIBLY talented
This is an excellent series--you really do capture the style of the various folks you're channeling. I'd be very curious to hear a Brian Eno version. And, going for the more obvious, Rick Wakeman.
Very much in TG's vein. Glad I stumbled upon this.
This is my favorite so far, both to look at and to listen to.
I would love to hear a Giorgio Moroder version.
Oh this is funny ... after watching the jarre one , this popped up - and now more - good work
i am a patient person, and still wait for Gary Numan or Kraftwerk versions of the Dr Who theme. only time (and relative dimensions in space) will tell! lol.
This alternate song is fitting if Doctor Who would return to it's original roots as a purely sci-fi educational show.
I can actually see this being an alternate possibility. Probably the 8th Doctor's theme :)
The buildup is too long for anyone to actually use it
That's another great take on this iconic theme tune. Would love to hear your take on The Orb doing it - I think that could really work!
do an Airwolf style theme! a "what if Sylvester Levay made a Doctor Who theme"
Awesome. I know Christopher Franke was part of TD but you could also do Dr Who in the style of Franke's Babylon 5. Also Mike Oldfield is another suggestion. Adored all your Dr Who remixes.
This is my fav so far. and that arp ...damn that is sweet. I can never get them to sound this tangerine dreamy hahaha
Superb, well done. Amazing work.
Kraftwerk, Gary numan Two good ones excellent videos and music by the way!
Yup you nailed that
Also on point. Dude, you ROCK!
Damn. I love that title design. So deliciously 80s fantasy.
Can't take the credit for that. I nabbed it from the cover of American reprints of the old Target novels
Thank-you, this is beautiful.
This is so incredibly sexy. Wonderful composition.
Very clever visuals
This is really great but I get an Oldfield vibe from this!
I would’ve loved to hear: “What if Harry Manfredini did a Doctor Who theme.”
I would love to hear a "what if Klaus Schulze did a Doctor Who theme?" It would be an intro music that is to be 30min long :-)
The song is awesome.
Fantastic! I wonder if you've ever listened to the band Passport with Klaus Doldinger? They did a song called "Abracadabra" that sounds suspiciously like Doctor Who.
I have just given it a listen, and I see what you mean!
Edgar Froese would have liked this. :-)
Yes, Edgar's spirit runs strong here.
Gratuitous plug... Vonal KSZ "Dr Who" 12" single, four mixes. Chillage People - "Dr Whooooo", Live at festination Venus, Sheffield, available on Unity Dub's "Voyage into Paradise".
What if Ozric Tentacles did a Doctor Who Theme?
This would have been good for a feature-film opener.
"What if Kraftwerk did a Doctor Who theme ?"
Oh, I like this.
this is amazing
Would love a Gary Numan/Tubeway Army one
Brilliant.
I love this.
There has to be a John Williams version. But one name I didn't see mentioned was James Horner.
I have an idea: What if George C Music did a Doctor Who theme (in his own style)?
very cool !
Brilliant work
OMG, this could have easily ended up on the show if Tangerine themselves did it.
There's some awesome new bands the genre is synth wave I think that these bands would make a good Dr who theme tune
You should make a "What if Hans Zimmer did a Doctor Who Theme?"
Followed by a John Williams version!
Roger Worsley and a Ron wasserman version
Max Patrick Thuesen Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross
All of these!
Argh no thanks !
ich liebe es.
Very good rendition. You've got a good ear for capturing each artist's style. For the TD fans, did you spot the sequencer bit from 'Logos' at the end? Keep 'em coming...
good one
Do you have a masters degree in music theory? You capture perfectly the target musicians style and apply it to Dr Who theme so well. I am blown away.
You're very kind, but I've not studied music academically beyond secondary school. That said, I've watched a lot of videos on music theory and composition on UA-cam (Adam Neely, Alex Ball, Ben Levin and David Bruce are well worth checking out).
A lot of it was just listening to the artists in question obsessively for long periods of time. In the case of Tangerine Dream, I've been a casual fan for about 10 years now after listening to a couple of their early soundtracks. While working on this piece, I probably listened to a few of their albums on repeat for a good couple of months!
@@GeorgeCMusic I play music by ear as well, but your skills are amazing.
@@MelancolicoCatrin Thank you!
Here's another one - What if Yellow Magic Orchestra did a Doctor Who Theme?
Love on a Real Train meets Doctor Who intro theme.
How about versions by E.S. Posthumus (Cold Case Theme Tune - "Nara") or Crystal Method (Bones Theme Tune)
To be honest, I find that a lot of the music from the 1980s episodes reminds me considerably of TD's during the same period.
This is awesome! Daft Punk or Linkin Park next? 🤠
Has nobody suggested Jean Jacques Perrey yet? He would be perfect for Dr Who
What if DEVO did a Doctor Who theme?
Maybe just Mark and Bob Mothersbaugh alone?
Devo in the style of thor ragnarok
you need to make up a "valeyard theme" or "daak the dalek slayer theme" get brinks to make a deal with netflicks for a show.
Second View! Also great Arrangement!
What if KMFDM or Rammstein did a Doctor Who theme?
What if Ron Grainer made a Doctor Who theme?
He did: ua-cam.com/video/t1SZs4xudf8/v-deo.html
Sounds more like what kraftwerk might do
What if Mark "X-files" Snow made a Doctor Who theme
Who votes: Brian Eno and Harmonia, Coil and Throbbing Gristle?
What if The Wiggles did a Dr who theme?
bravo, do a klaus schulze next !!!
How about a Hawkwind Doctor who
Doctor Who: Veteran of a Thousand Psychic Wars?
That would be awesome...
How about mid-period ('74-'80) Cluster OR 80's Chris & Cosey OR late 70's/early 80's Tyndall?
;-)
What if TOOL did a Doctor Who theme
That logo at the beginning was from old US printings of the novelizations, right? I swear I recall my high school library having an old hardback, with this logo, that had three novelizations in one. I believe it had Genesis of the Daleks and Terror of the Zygons, so the other one was probably Revenge of the Cybermen.
What if Aphex Twin did a who theme.
Just upping the ante here. :)
What if Devo did a Doctor Who Theme around the time they did "Booji Boy's Funeral"?
A Barry Gray version would be interesting.
In the title credits of past actors, you've failed to mention Peter Cushing who played the Dr in two films.
I mean, I love the Cushing movies (especially the second one), but they're not canon to the TV series, and perhaps more to the point, don't have Grainer/Derbyshire's theme in them. I did chuck a brief flash of Cushing in the Art of Noise video though.
What if John Williams composed a Doctor Who Theme?
(Yeah, I know...)
How about one in the style of Yoko Kanno? Got to add Jodie Whittaker now.
mike oldfield / tubular bells version ?
What if The Shadows did the Dr who theme?
What if Tangerine Dream did a Doctor Who theme, Phaedra style?
Why hasn't anyone included the 13th doctor?
Do a Bobby McFerrin version, if you dare!
There is a lot of electric guitar in TD tracks. Think it would be more convincing if the melody was doubled on a distorted strat with a overdose of phasing and bit too much reverb.
