The project leader prodigy of the S660, Ryo Mukumoto was 22 years old when he pitched the idea of returning the kei sportscar, in Honda's internal competition of sales pitches for future products. He became the youngest in Honda's history of lead engineers and Honda allocated him with other young members of the company to make his ideas come into reality. He owned an S2000 and like the Chief Engineer of the Toyota 86/GR Supra Tetsuya Tada, he realised that young people in Japan weren't interested in sportscars, so he wanted to reignite interest to those, by producing an affordable yet fun-to-drive sportscar. Type 'Honda S660 Ryo Mukumoto' to find out more about how this S660 came into fruition.

Mr. Murakami is a high school graduate. He did not go to college. But, he studied by himself in the company and also using his private time. When he won the competition, he was only 21 years old, then became the project leader to build brand new sports car, S660. We can say it this maybe another side of Japanese dream.

It's a damn shame Honda hasn't put these up for sale in the UK. The same reasons they are sold in Japan would also apply here as well. They work brilliantly on our country roads, they're efficient, small, great fun to drive and most importantly - affordable (if it were actually sold here that is). Maybe the suspension could use a re-work as we don't keep our roads as good as the Japanese do, lol.

      S660 is my car.
This car is very narrow and the engine is in the back so it's very hot.
It also has low power, making it a pain to drive on the highway.
However, it is faster than any other car on downhill slopes with a series of sharp curves, and can maneuver into narrow back alleys.
It's a lot of trouble, but I plan to keep driving this car forever.
Thank you for the great explanation!

@@NeonBlunders Thanks for providing your car to make this possible and I agree, many young enthusiasts tend to go for more practical turbocharged AWD hatchbacks that do 0-60 in under 5 seconds, over these pure two seater RWD sportscars. The good thing about the 2015+ ND generation Mazda MX-5s are that they tend to be pretty good for insurance compared to those hatchbacks because you see more elderly people or women driving them, hence the fewer crash rates. Japan is a similar size to uk and Tokyo has many parallels with the road size and right hand drive. Japanese cars designed for real driving and small tight roads work best here. Can't believe they haven't adopted kei cars yet. We took on the Prius hybrid from japan. They probably want to push EU brands here more that's why. Embargo times again.

Lovely little car. I once owned a 1987 Suzuki Forsa Turbo, basically the Canadian equivalent to the MK1 (?) Swift with a turbo engine with about 80-90hp, that weighed 700kg, it was massive fun. I'm sure this gives similar thrills and more. Had 130 on the digital dash on occasion, probably more like 120 really. If I won the lottery I'd track one down and restore it.

The fact that Honda can still make a fun, high revving roadster back home gives me hope that a new S2000 has the potential to be pretty decent and close to the original's ethos. Not sure how that bodes for meeting emission standards here, but if they can make a 4 cyl turbo rev to 8k, that would be a dream.

@@Razmatazuk you have to appreciate how small these are. A k20 and gearbox is wider than the chassis rails that the engine is mounted to, I have measured. Also those chassis rails are ultra high tensile steel, heavily compromising rigidity and a k20 will weight considerable more. Simple wont fit. Finally, H22 FTW, far superior.

I m had a Honda 600 coupe, The 600 Cc Air cooled roller skate. I loved it other than the fact that it 600 was screaming( in pain) at 50 mph. Good thing the speed limit was only 55 then. Forrest green. Almost got hit so many times. Eventually had it painted to a florescent yellow green. That helped. Was leaving after visiting friends. 2 of them thought it would be funny to turn the car around for me, with me in it, by lifting the front bumper and walking 180 degrees around. Ok it was funny.
