It sounds like you're in the perfect position to answer but big question from this video: Will this tactic work as well in a Vulture as in a Viper? I was planning on picking up a Vulture to see how it compares with the Cobra I'll currently flying, but this tactic looks like so much fun that I may go for a Viper instead if it's more effective in this role.

Thanks for the awesome videos you made! Really enjoying them and learning a lot! Question about this vid (and some others); I notice you sometimes turn off flight assist for a very short time, what does it exactly do? Where do you use it for? It looks like you get a better turn rate, but just wanted to ask for sure. And in the RES zone, the security ships helping you, do they help you because you are green to them, or do they Always help you? (because maybe RES zones work like that?) I have not tried those zones but want to try them soon. Thanks in advance :)
Glad your enjoying them :) Turning flight assist off allows you not only to turn a little faster, but it also allows your ship to fly in one direction while facing another, its very handy in some situations. Security ships regardless if they are green or not will attack anything hostile in the area. Its why when your starting out, to stay with a group of security ships, otherwise sometimes you could be fighting on your own. Security ships will totally ignore you, unless you fire on them, or on a non hostile target. So be very careful, a stray shot or two can land you in a world of hurt as all those security ships turn on you. So watch your fire. :)
Great video and thanks for taking the time to make it. I picked up some tips and should I take up Bounty Hunting I'll take into account your worthwhile suggestions. My only problem is I'm left handed and use a Thrustmaster T16000M and keyboard for the other controls not covered by the joystick. Cheers and again well done.
You know it's interesting, depending on the optimal and thruster mass of the ship, you sometimes turn faster with 0 pips to engine, perhaps not on the viper but I've noticed this phenomenon in the courier.
9:52 What is sticking off of that asteroid ahead and just to the upper right of center? It looks like a rod of some kind. There is another at 10:10 andit disappears as the ship get closer. Is it some kind of marker? A graphical glitch that pops off when you get close enough to draw a higher LoD mesh?
Good video. I've been holding off on hunting hazardous zones until I get a vulture, but I hunt pirates a fair bit with my cobra mkiii. I'm often having to take a break from constant fire even with an A rated distributor and power plant though, because I use two medium burst lasers and two small multi cannons. I suppose if I drop the lasers down to small pulse like you, I could possibly sustain forever like that. Or maybe go to two small pulse and two medium multis. :p
Oh darn ,I thought meant the sidewinder in the title. YOU know with practice a person can really make a profit off of a Sidewinder fighter pilot project sniping bounties in high security system in high extraction site hitting just enough to get credits for bounty but not enough to get aggrieved from the fired upon npc while other npc are fighting it.
Love you videos! They have helped me a lot. I'm wondering about your preferred progression of ships. I have been using the viper for a while now, with a shameless copy of your build :-). I recently traded it if for a vulture, but I'm just unsure about it. Yes it handles better, but I feel like the viper could still handle the jobs the vulture can. Would you recommend continuing to use the vulture or get the viper back and save up for something bigger?
Great video 'Jones, love your work mate! New sub, fellow Aussie and still very new to the game here - I'm wondering if you could tell me what purpose that heat sink you have serves, what with the trusty little pulse lasers being so effective, if it's necessary at all, or is it related to Silent Running or perhaps something else instead? Cheers.
Honestly, just spend a lot of practicing flying around objects just using your thrusters, controlling your direction of movement balancing the forward thrusters with your directional thrusters. Eventually, it will become second nature, so that when your in combat, your not even really thinking about it, and just react.
Vindicator Jones I don't have forward or reverse thrusters on the controller I'm using, because I can't think of anything I would be willing to replace. Should I swap throttle out for forward/reverse thrusters? Would that be worth it? My right sick is lateral/vertical thrusters (alt.= yaw), my left stick is pitch/roll, my bumpers are throttle, and my triggers are weapon firing. My dpad is default pips, face buttons are default as well.
Sir, good outfit indeed, but you should try fixed mounts for weapons, they pack a better punch , plus it will be more challenging and satisfying to destroy targets, I have an almost identical setup as yours but do more damage per second. have good spaceflights!
Thats a hard question to answer.. a lot relies on feel and timing.. Try and deactivate it at the start of a turn and turn it back on just before the end of a turn.. Easy to say, hard to master.
@@VindicatorJones It sounds a little like the "engine kill" back in Freelancer, which made you slide on into whatever direction your ship was currently moving in but you were still able to turn around. Think people used it a lot for "jousting" of sorts in pvp. Is it somewhat like that?
I love my Freagle. A-specced to the max, it turns on a penny and is so much fun for zipping round and about stations and planet surfaces Cheap rebuy too, should accidents occur.... 😀
Ok, in my Viper vs Somethingelse encounters, the NPCs never fly this easy, they always boost away and either turn to face me, or at least mess up my approach. I still kill them, but I've yet to disable a module on an enemy ship... The other day I was chasing this Asp X, that did not hit me a single time, but it was maneuvering so wildly I could barely keep up. is it me or has 2.3 changed the way NPCs do combat?
Good stuff and great tips, however on a side note: please do a low cut on your microphone sound in your post production. Your voice sounds very muddy and is emphasized even more while listening to on studio grade speakers. Otherwise the rest is top quality. Keep it up!
Nice thank you soo much. I suck in combat and this helped me with the basics. Any tips for how to avoid their rapid turning using reverse thrust? It seems that every time I would over shoot and loop around they would instantly be facing me even in a vulture. I only had an easy time with pythons.
Yeah, I will be making a video on this shortly, but there is no counter that can work 100% of the time. Its just adapting to the situation and being aware of what your target will try and do. Following their engine trails, their speed and heading will often give you very clear indications of what they are trying to do.
Holy crap! I'm using a Viper Mk IV with reinforced hull and military grade armour and I still get slaughtered time after time. I really need to learn to use my thrusters more.
Pulse lasers are really energy and heat efficient compared to burst and beam, which makes them good for sustained fire. For the big guns, he's using medium multicannons, which do use some power and heat, but are much lower than comparable size lasers in the same hardpoints. Once the shields are down, he spins up the cannons and keeps flinging depleted uranium until they're swiss cheese!
i currently have a viper mk4, and i love it. i used to have a cobra mk3, but the viper mk4 is so much more fun, would you recomend "downgrading" to the mk3? for mor maneuverability and speed?
+Xavier H. Absolutely. Mk 3 is much better imho... Although hull tankers will disagree with me. It really boils down to your playstyle. The Mk 3 is just so much more maneuverable and I love its speed. I prefer to avoid damage than to soak it up. But thats just me.
Jonesy, think you can do a video on what players with Python and greater sizes can do against things like a vulture? I find turrets do bugger all damage, and obviously they'll outturn you. I think we need a way to kill them and not just have to default to running away
+Rubberduckzillas Currently the best way to handle this situation in Pythons/Anacondas/Corvettes is to fly backwards, but without getting too far away from the target.. try and hold your position around 400-600 meters with your throttle. You can usually maintain constant fire on them, while they try and roll and avoid your fire. If they are firing at you constantly, put 3-4 pips into shields, and go easy on the trigger until they start to try and roll away For an example of it (its called shield tanking) check out my earlier video on the FDL go to around 9:25 and you can see what I mean from there. Although this is FDL specific, the tactic will work on any ship, and suits larger ships. ua-cam.com/video/rMn5qqq9ge4/v-deo.html
may I ask? Is that Pulse or Burst? I ask because they have changed the game in the last 2 years as shown in the menus and idk if they have changed the name
Some swear by the Viper Mk4 but personally I really dont like it. I much prefer the maneuverability of the Mk3. My logic is that its better to avoid being hit than soaking up damage with modules. But thats just my opinion.
I was thinking the same but since I'm actually rubbish at evasion (before watching your videos) I tended to prefer more tankiness. I hope I could try it out later. Thanks a bunch mate!
I ❤ BIG Ships but then I ❤ & truly want to own a big American Kenworth Rig. I own 3 T10. 1 is an Explorer ship. The other 2 are War ships for Combat & Alien hunting. I use a Corvette for cargo.
Yeah, I've been running more expensive ships for a long time now, but I love the viper so much. I usually go back to the eagle for the fun, but my vipers get alot of love. I really like the mk 4
I keep hearing watch the thruster and trail but what am I suppose to do with that information? I know enough that I need to counter or match it but I am unsure what exactly how I am suppose to input my controls. I feel like I know what Im suppose to do but I can't seem to get it right in actual space sim dogfight.
Depends on the situation. I can do that in my corvette sometimes, and my turreted cutter, because weapon draw is relatively low compared to my engineered distributor.. Its about balancing power to where you need it.. You dont want to be running out of weapons power in a firefight, and when under heavy attack, you certainly want to have as many pips into shields as possible. But to just constantly have pips 2-2-2 is really not a good idea in most circumstances.
+Vindicator Jones I was just about to ask about that heat sink launcher. I understand why you chose larger multi-cannons and smaller lasers, and agree (size penalty only applying to hull damage). I was curious as to your statement that it runs counter to how you normally choose weapon loadouts, however. You normally have them swapped? If so, why? I too love small ships, and sticking on my prey's tail as they try and turn towards me. I agree with you, positioning is paramount.
i feel like the point of this video is to show how a non optimal setup and a little bit of easy maneuvers can get you a long way to your next treasure.
+Anthony Martin I did some testing on this in my FDL in a video a while back, and to be honest, Armour makes little to no difference in handling.. adding HRP is negligible.. mostly it only seems to affect jump range. Personally I much prefer having the additional armour buffer for when things turn south quickly, then worry about some tiny imperceivable change in handling.
+Vindicator Jones Thanks. I did notice that armour also reduced speed in my FDL from over 400 boost to about 396 so I left it off without testing agility as the shields were plenty strong enough, but now I'm in an FAS I was thinking about shoving as much armour on as possible.
+Anthony Martin Yes, sorry, forgot to mention that, it does lower your top boost speed, but this is minimal. Hull tanking on the FAS is excellent and I completely recommend loading up with HRP's
+Anthony Martin it does change your acceleration rate - which means getting to speeds (straight velocity and turning) as well as stopping will take a little longer. But the bulkheads have more impact that the packages just because they are heavier (it's always just the total mass dictating what your thrusters have to work with - which is all module/weapon/ship weight combined)
Hi Vindicator with the relies of 2.4 coming what would you consider a good fighter and loadout for PvE and PvP as I think the last video on this was about a year ago
PVE and PVP are two different kettles of fish, usually requiring different kinds of loadouts. As for ship, all depends on your budget. Best pure combat ships are the Viper, Vulture, FAS and FDL.
Nothing wrong with the Cobra, its a great multirole ship and is still relatively good in combat. However for straight out combat, I would choose the viper. It has much better maneuverability than the cobra.

Just bought a Viper for bounty hunting. Now I know how to set it up. Thanks.
Hey VJ, loved this video mate. I might go and try this for myself :)
You know it's interesting, depending on the optimal and thruster mass of the ship, you sometimes turn faster with 0 pips to engine, perhaps not on the viper but I've noticed this phenomenon in the courier.
This guy is a very good pilot
9:52 What is sticking off of that asteroid ahead and just to the upper right of center? It looks like a rod of some kind. There is another at 10:10 andit disappears as the ship get closer. Is it some kind of marker? A graphical glitch that pops off when you get close enough to draw a higher LoD mesh?
That is the mining Laser from an NPC ship Mining the Asteroid :)
@@VindicatorJones Ahhh okay. ty.
Vindicator Jones, you are the Scott Manley of Elite Dangerous.
+Mr Crumb nah. I am one of the smaller youtubers. Obsidian any, chaos wulff and kornelius are bigger :)
The Viper MK III is the most fun ship to pilot. It's fast, it's powerful; treat the ship with respect and it will strike horror into your enemies.
7:45 Viper IV pilot Jerk Beefy is not to be underestimated.
Hello , did you upgrade your pulse lasers?
Great video 'Jones, love your work mate!
New sub, fellow Aussie and still very new to the game here - I'm wondering if you could tell me what purpose that heat sink you have serves, what with the trusty little pulse lasers being so effective, if it's necessary at all, or is it related to Silent Running or perhaps something else instead? Cheers.
Informative and entertaining as always. Keep up the good work:)
+Tharaka Weerasinghe are you from Sri Lanka ?
Raveen Fernando yup and i see you are too :)

"Your initial attack position is extremely important"
B O N K
Jones....How in the world do you maintain your position so well? I've seen your two videos on thrusters. What do you recommend?
Nice vid man, love the Viper.
+Pryme Fodder Viper is like a gokart.. it will never replace your daily drive, but man its just so much fun.
Hey VJ, do you have any good tips on when to deactivate the flight assist like you did in the video once?
Thats a hard question to answer.. a lot relies on feel and timing.. Try and deactivate it at the start of a turn and turn it back on just before the end of a turn.. Easy to say, hard to master.
@@VindicatorJones It sounds a little like the "engine kill" back in Freelancer, which made you slide on into whatever direction your ship was currently moving in but you were still able to turn around. Think people used it a lot for "jousting" of sorts in pvp. Is it somewhat like that?
thinking of practicing this method in my imperial eagle, just for the style
I love my Freagle. A-specced to the max, it turns on a penny and is so much fun for zipping round and about stations and planet surfaces Cheap rebuy too, should accidents occur.... 😀
gimballed make so much Sense when you are 30 feet behind the Target at all times...
do you fly with a HOTAS?
I tried this and no matter what I did, they turned around to face me. There was nothing I could do to stay behind them
oh wow i didnt know there was a category for sub targets! very cool
Any particular reason you don't use a kill warrant scanner? From what I understand you can earn more if you scan them first before you destroy them.
AI got a slight buff after this video. The same principles apply, but the new AI makes it a bit more tougher.
thought so, thanks for confirming
I was wondering the same thing. Good to know, but this still looks like a fun tactic to try. At least the small ships have a cheap rebuy cost.
TheGholiday crazy thing is thar for combat the viper iii is better than the iv!
How did he sustain fire for so long?
Pulse lasers are really energy and heat efficient compared to burst and beam, which makes them good for sustained fire. For the big guns, he's using medium multicannons, which do use some power and heat, but are much lower than comparable size lasers in the same hardpoints. Once the shields are down, he spins up the cannons and keeps flinging depleted uranium until they're swiss cheese!
This video is proof that you don’t need an expensive ship in order to be successful in elite dangerous, especially when it comes to combat.
Great video! Would a viper mkIV work for this? Never really done any PVP and I'd love to give this a try, looks like a lot of fun :)
where was the kill warrant scanner could have made more with it
how do u deal with ships that turn and reverse on you?
pitch up and thrust down to keep them on your nose?
i currently have a viper mk4, and i love it. i used to have a cobra mk3, but the viper mk4 is so much more fun, would you recomend "downgrading" to the mk3? for mor maneuverability and speed?
+Xavier H. Absolutely. Mk 3 is much better imho... Although hull tankers will disagree with me. It really boils down to your playstyle. The Mk 3 is just so much more maneuverable and I love its speed. I prefer to avoid damage than to soak it up. But thats just me.
Vindicator Jones ok, thanks, ill think about switching :)
I’ve only been playing about a month and am already taking down expert alliance crusaders alone in a cobra mark 3
Can you make an engineered version of this video?
Jonesy, think you can do a video on what players with Python and greater sizes can do against things like a vulture? I find turrets do bugger all damage, and obviously they'll outturn you. I think we need a way to kill them and not just have to default to running away
+Rubberduckzillas Currently the best way to handle this situation in Pythons/Anacondas/Corvettes is to fly backwards, but without getting too far away from the target.. try and hold your position around 400-600 meters with your throttle. You can usually maintain constant fire on them, while they try and roll and avoid your fire. If they are firing at you constantly, put 3-4 pips into shields, and go easy on the trigger until they start to try and roll away
For an example of it (its called shield tanking) check out my earlier video on the FDL go to around 9:25 and you can see what I mean from there. Although this is FDL specific, the tactic will work on any ship, and suits larger ships.
ua-cam.com/video/rMn5qqq9ge4/v-deo.html
haha the adder was like "rollrollROOOOOOLLLLL"
Type 10 defender is just fine for me lol I rinse the big ones with full heat reduced lasers with any heat I do produce is put into my targets.
How do you do your B-Roll/Stock footage at the beginning? Are you piloting both the camera and the ship? Or do you have a helper?
How do you do maneuvers like that in flight assist on??? Do you just use your 6DOF thrusters?
may I ask? Is that Pulse or Burst? I ask because they have changed the game in the last 2 years as shown in the menus and idk if they have changed the name
how do you get the awesome shots of the ship? debug camera?
Yes, debug camera and lots of practicing with the joystick to get the smooth movements.. lol
haha awesome way to start your videos man. btw, would you recommend a viper IV with the better internals vs a viper 3 with more maneuverability?
Some swear by the Viper Mk4 but personally I really dont like it. I much prefer the maneuverability of the Mk3. My logic is that its better to avoid being hit than soaking up damage with modules. But thats just my opinion.
I was thinking the same but since I'm actually rubbish at evasion (before watching your videos) I tended to prefer more tankiness. I hope I could try it out later. Thanks a bunch mate!
was this done with FA on or off?
I ❤ BIG Ships but then I ❤ & truly want to own a big American Kenworth Rig.
I own 3 T10. 1 is an Explorer ship.
The other 2 are War ships for Combat & Alien hunting.
I use a Corvette for cargo.
Yeah, I've been running more expensive ships for a long time now, but I love the viper so much. I usually go back to the eagle for the fun, but my vipers get alot of love. I really like the mk 4
What controls are you using? Would be really helpful.
+Nuladin Im using the X52pro HOTAS
Your videos are the best.
I keep hearing watch the thruster and trail but what am I suppose to do with that information? I know enough that I need to counter or match it but I am unsure what exactly how I am suppose to input my controls. I feel like I know what Im suppose to do but I can't seem to get it right in actual space sim dogfight.
Is this viper engineered? I cant get to 485 boost in that
Man the way you fly the viper you can even take my engineered python. I am so bad in combat😅
VJ....is there ever a time, or with a certain ship, where 2,2,2 in pips are ok?
Depends on the situation. I can do that in my corvette sometimes, and my turreted cutter, because weapon draw is relatively low compared to my engineered distributor.. Its about balancing power to where you need it.. You dont want to be running out of weapons power in a firefight, and when under heavy attack, you certainly want to have as many pips into shields as possible. But to just constantly have pips 2-2-2 is really not a good idea in most circumstances.
why no warrent scanner?
+Jordan Lovett, yeah it gives you a nice bonus. even if it spams your bounty claims. after a week or so i kill myself so i can get it cleaned out : b
+Jordan Lovett Yes my mistake. Rip out the heat sink and put in a warrant scanner. Small oversight on my part, thanks for pointing it out.
Tobias Bergstrand Yoo just go to a broker and cash em all in, minus 25% profit but you dont have to travel round the galaxy redeeming vouchers
What are your thoughts about armour v agility in these ships? Does piling on armour and hull packages reduce manoeuvrability at all?
Vulture, heavy combat with slight exploration
Hi Vindicator with the relies of 2.4 coming what would you consider a good fighter and loadout for PvE and PvP as I think the last video on this was about a year ago
PVE and PVP are two different kettles of fish, usually requiring different kinds of loadouts. As for ship, all depends on your budget. Best pure combat ships are the Viper, Vulture, FAS and FDL.
Why dont u have a bounty scanner equipped?
What do you think of the Imp Eagle?
+Mal2103 Not a big fan to be honest. Viper has one extra medium hardpoint, which you kinda need when hunting big game.
Where do you get the multi cannons
wow, just wow. wish i was that good at combat.
Miss the old days of sidewinder solo kills on elite anacondas lol
do you know how to get the black camo for the federal corvette?
i saw a picture of it once and i fell in love but i cant find it anywhere
its easy to take out a npc's shps but can you do it against a cmdr's ship with high shield and weapons, I think not.
youre so fucking good man. its crazy watching you
How are you able to fire your pulse lasers for so long?
Andy Craciun full pips on weapons
I have a Cobra MkIII that I've been using for bounty hunting, would it be worth switching to a Viper?
Nothing wrong with the Cobra, its a great multirole ship and is still relatively good in combat. However for straight out combat, I would choose the viper. It has much better maneuverability than the cobra.
+Vindicator Jones alright thanks
I'm running with the same ship at the moment. The jump range is amazing on it. what loadout were you running on your hardpoints?
I've got full on multi cannons . probably not a good idea but I will try it out
I tried that myself hahaha it really wasn't a good idea. especially against shields Nafri Isaug
Wow just wow
