Excellent Howto, thanks! Couple of additional hints for anyone doing the same: 1. As pointed out, there is a nice chunky bolt for the earth connector, but you will need a socket set with suitable extender and a ratchet. 2. If you have a passenger air bag in the way (or even if you don't), the glove box can be popped out easily (5 screws in mine) for access.
Thanks for the tutorial, very good. Fitted mine today. Bit of a ball ache drilling the hole without an angle head drill, but managed in the end. I took the glove box out and found an earth. Keep the videos coming.
It’s been on my to do list for a while, I like the fact it’s a plug and play so will definitely be purchasing one. Will need to find a different cable route though because of air bag!
That dashboard is crying out for a cb radio I reckon. Get a double din conversion kit, pop an old skool head unit in the top, CB radio in the bottom 👌 sweet. I've subscribed and rung the bell too.
Great stuff, proper down to earth "how to do" video, with simple explanations. Love the bit about waiting for the beep, its just what would happen to me. Many thanks, I'll be watching you again :)
Very useful Mick, Mine is 5.1 2012. and my no19 fuse already has a piggy back, I fitted a dashcam mirror with a rear view camera. It is always useful to see what others are doing and how they do it. Cheers, keep 'em coming
I have just did similar job but for T5.1 - the problem is it is almost impossible to buy such version, so I took one for T5 (exactly like in video), removed the casing, pulled the blank from dashboard, drilled/cut proper holes, then put the charger in it and voile'a I got T5.1 version. the rest is the same as in the video :)
@@caspervanlife8466 it’s arrived today!! Nice little job for the weekend. Thanks to you I’ve now got this mod I never knew existed and I was after some USB ports.
Hi great video, I have just installed mine on me T5 (2007) however after inserting my memory stick with over a hundred albums on it will only find and play the first 6, just wondering if you have any ideas why? Regards
Just found this video, it looks like really good advice. The 12v socket has just stopped working. I have cheched the main fuse box, and all fuses are intact, and I have checked under the passenger seat for the 'hidden' fuse, and there isn't one there. My van had a swivel seat fitted before I bought it, so perhaps the elusive fuse has been hidden somewhere. Plan B is to fit a dash mounted 12v socket, but I am struggling to find one that will fit, so I have decided to turn to the hive mind. Can you offer advice / links to what I'm looking for?
Earthing is necessary in a vehicle as it's basically the electrical return to the battery and completes the circuit. No earth = no circuit = no go! Good video - thanks. I didn't know that USB part existed but, as you say, much more accessible than using an adapter in the cigarette lighter socket.
I did end up making my own for the T5 that I have due to to it having different blanks. I put one on each side of the air-conditioning controls. I've put mine into dash bit not connected power yet as I couldn't get the wire through to the fusebox after routing it. I need to relocate it. What does fuse 19 service on your T5? It seems to vary.
Hya. Nice video. I have a 2012 vw t5. But. When I have looked for twin usb port for mine. I draw a blank. Slight difference in size. Amazon have loads. But say it's for 2003 to 2009. Any idea. Best wishes
So have done the same on a 2003, usb ports working but the led lights don't go out when you turn off and take keys out. Any suggestions here on why that might be? Worried about a battery drain. Led lights are also blue not red, so not sure if it's a later model of port. Everything hooked up exactly same as video. Any help appreciated!
Hi great video. I’m going to install a USB port in my T5 van soon and will certainly use your video as a guide. Just wondering if the fuse you removed had a purpose and may have been there to power something else, will it cause problems if I removed it?
I used your video to fit a USB port in my T5 today. Great tutorial video! Well explained. I removed the glove box and earthed the black wire to a bolt attached to the frame of the dash. 👍
Do you (or anyone) happen to know if there's a way of doing this so that the USB is connected into the head unit, so you can play music stored on your iPhone through the speakers? I've just picked up a 2015 T5 and the Bluetooth only works if I've got "mobile phone provision" - which I don't think I have so I'm looking for a wired solution instead.
I've seen some USB extension sockets for plugging into head units. Just make sure you get the ones that fit your dash. The 2015 models have different sized switches from the earlier ones. You could also just get a regular USB extension cable and cut a hole in the blank.
@@leglessinoz since then I've simply bought a bluetooth device that connects to the iphone and uses the a radio to play music through. Sorted thanks :)
@Stereofidelic 67 my stereo has a few USB inputs on it and I brought one of them to a socket on the dash. It let's the stereo read media but I noticed that it will also charge a phone. Of course that was after I added two dedicated USB charging sockets.
Did you connect to the cigarette lighter? There's a 12v to 5v dc to dc converter in those USB phone charging ports. If you connect that to a source that always has power, it will eventually drain your battery. With the cigarette lighter it doesn't matter because it's only drawing power while it's heating up.
It would have to go onto another switched live fuse…I’ll be honest I’m not sure which that would be, as mine was already free. Hopefully someone will know the answer and comment. Otherwise, it might be a question for a forum or Facebook group, like the Dubbed Out Community…
It's a pity these USB adapters are made for the older dash. Trying to find nice ones for the later dash with the smaller switch cutouts is really hard. I'm going to have to make some.

Take the radio out and there's a nice earthing point, also makes it easier to route the wires
And that’s why I love the UA-cam community. Great feedback, much appreciated 👍
This was, in all its simplicity, an extremely helpful remark.
Thanks John. And thanks Mick, for the helpful video.

Which other fuse can you use if 19 is already used
What is fuse 19 original function on your T5?
Surely fuse 19 is for cigarette lighter? If is get rid and feed cam n ysb socket

Is earthing really necessary?
12v 5Amps not going to shock much.
Excellent video btw. Very helpful.

Good video - thanks. I didn't know that USB part existed but, as you say, much more accessible than using an adapter in the cigarette lighter socket.
Not an earth in the normal sense. It's the negative connection to the battery.

You can buy a slot in usb for your cigarette lighter which sits flush so very simple mod

Can only assume your fuse/connections are slightly different and not a switched live…

I used your video to fit a USB port in my T5 today. Great tutorial video! Well explained. I removed the glove box and earthed the black wire to a bolt attached to the frame of the dash. 👍
The fuse he removed has just been relocating to the piggy back connector. Now 2 fuses in the one slot.

how to connect aux??
Does your stereo have an AUX input? If not it'll be difficult. You could probably add one via Bluetooth if it has that.
Link?
Should be in the description I think…
