Frodo and Sam, led by Gollum, are on their way towards Mount Doom, in order to destroy the Ring. Meanwhile, Gandalf and Aragorn, lead the World of Men in the final battle for Middle-earth.

As a young boy, now going on 69, there are few scenes more thrilling in the history of movies than the Ride of the Rohirrim.

And it was truth: a hobbit stabbed the Witch King and a woman finished him.
Yes sir. If you recall, Merry was given an Elvish dagger for his sword. The dagger had an enchantment on it, which weakened the witch king. A Hobbit weakened him, and a woman finished him off.
When Aragorn said 'for Frodo' he was referring to the promise he made at the Council of Elrond (Fellowship of the Ring) 'if by my life or death I can protect you then I will'. He was willing to keep that promise - that is what heroes do.

A great Shadow has departed," said Gandalf, and then he laughed and the sound was like music, or like water in a parched land; and as he listened the thought came to Sam that he had not heard laughter, the pure sound of merriment, for days upon days without count.
The little girl that runs to Sam at the end is Sean Astin's Daughter (She graduated from college last year)! The baby held by Rosie is that actresses' baby!

That subtle glance at the rock which the third eagle makes, checking if there is someone else in need of rescue before departing with the other two eagles who carry Frodo and Sam. It gets me every time, the pity of Bilbo, and how avarice completed what duty failed to accomplish.
My favorite scene?
Aragorn: "My friends... You bow to no one"

@@juliesalander4706 I very rarely have a tear. This scene however never failed it´s effect on me, i always have chills down my neck and my eyes are less dry than usual.
And it transports so many implications and feelings...
even the 4 little creatures without many power in any way...
a king, that shares praises - big time at that...
not only praising, but refusing for them to bow, but bow instead. A king of powerful humans to few pretty much powerless hobbit-folks...
a kingdom and humanity sharing gratefulness... a huge amount of greatfulness...
the surprised hobbits, not really able to believe and comprehend whats happening...
and the criminally great score of course. It has a very, very uplifting effect.

Lewis's comment after Eowyn killed the Nazgul's steed.. "Oh, I'm sorry..I'll buy you a new one......!" That is probably the best comment on this scene I've ever heard.....brilliant! Superb timing, young man, I laughed out loud there, it took me by surprise........of course, you DO realise that you've now totally ruined the movie for me, because I will never be able to watch that scene again without thinking of that comment......!
"Everyone needs a friend like, Sam!" . . . No. Everyone needs to BE a friend like Sam.
No they are right. But they aren't mutually exclusive, both statements are true. We all need a Sam and need to BE a Sam. That's how we solve the problem.
Frodo never fully healed from his wounds, which means he could never stay happy in Middle-Earth. He, Gandalf, Bilbo, and the rest are going to the undying lands (Elf heaven essentially), where mortal beings usually aren't allowed. An exception is made for Frodo and Bilbo because they were ring bearers. In the appendices we learn that Sam becomes mayor of the Shire and lives a long and happy life. After his wife dies, he also sails west to the undying lands because he was briefly a ring bearer. So Frodo and Sam do meet again. Merry and Pippin spend their days with Aragorn in Gondor, and when they die they are buried next to Aragorn's grave. Legolas and Gimli remain friends, and their friendship heals the rift between Dwarf and Elf. When they reach their end, they also sail to the undying lands together. It's a massive honor for Gimli, being a dwarf, and never a ring bearer. Once they leave, the fellowship is gone from Middle Earth forever.

As inspiring as Sean Astin's delivery of that line is, Howard Shore's rising musical score does a lot for the emotion of the moment.
If you look at Gandalf's hand in the final scene, you see he's wearing a red jeweled ring, which is the third of the Elven rings...the other two are worn by Galadriel and Elrond.
The final line of this film is also the final line of the book.
I love that you said, "You just shot a horse. I hope you die." I feel the same way every time I see that scene!
Fun fact: The actors who played the members of the Fellowship all got matching tattoos to celebrate making the film and their friendship. (Except John Rhys-Davies, whose stunt double got the tattoo instead.)
Rhys-Davies is an observant Presbyterian, which is what prompted him to decline the mark.
The first time I saw this, i had forgotten that until the end of Return of the King, Frodo thought Gandalf was dead. When he see's him at the end and says "Gandalf?!",. you can really see it
I remember seeing this with my Dad. The film was way ahead of its time & Rohans charge was unforgettable.
They don’t show it in this movie, but while Sam has the ring there’s a moment where the ring shows him a vision and he starts to consider what kind of Dark Lord he would be. I don’t remember it perfectly, but he imagines himself as a giant powerful warrior whose presence rallies armies into Mordor to destroy Sauron and then he turns Mordor into a Green and Wild place. He changes his mind when he remembers Frodo is his master and best friend, and that he himself is a simple Hobbit who enjoys a simple life, not some grand lord.
That sounds like an amazing scene!
As it drew near the great furnaces where, in the deeps of time, it had been shaped and forged, the Ring's power grew, and it became more fell, untameable except by some mighty will. As Sam stood there, even though the Ring was not on him but hanging by its chain about his neck, he felt himself enlarged, as if he were robed in a huge distorted shadow of himself, a vast and ominous threat halted upon the walls of Mordor. He felt that he had from now on only two choices: to forbear the Ring, though it would torment him; or to claim it, and challenge the Power that sat in its dark hold beyond the valley of shadows. Already the Ring tempted him, gnawing at his will and reason. Wild fantasies arose in his mind; and he saw Samwise the Strong, Hero of the Age, striding with a flaming sword across the darkened land, and armies flocking to his call as he marched to the overthrow of Barad-dur. And then all the clouds rolled away, and the white sun shone, and at his command the vale of Gorgoroth became a garden of flowers and trees and brought forth fruit. He had only to put on the Ring and claim it for his own, and all this could be. In that hour of trial it was his love of his master that helped most to hold him firm; but also deep down in him lived still unconquered his plain hobbit-sense: he knew in the core of his heart that he was not large enough to bear such a burden, even if such visions were not a mere cheat to betray him. The one small garden of a free gardener was all his need and due, not a garden swollen to a realm; his own hands to use, not the hands of others to command. 'And anyway all these notions are only a trick, he said to himself.

Faramir and Eowyn love story, it´s quite deeper and incredibly romantic in the book. Here we only see a few nice moments.
The moment of aragorn kneeling in front of the hobbits always hits me in the feelings. Even more so when the thought process behind the story is explained a bit: Tolkien wanted to show that even the smallest and ”insignificant” people (hobbits in this case) can cause a massive change, and that even the small good deeds keep darkness at bay. I somehow love the idea
I've always completely appreciated how Tolkien closed Frodo's story. So many reactors don't understand it, but it looks like you did. I find myself wondering what that conversation with your son might look like (after he's enjoyed a good sleep: it is a very long film). Thank you for sharing your experience with us: I hope it was worth it.
Remember Gollums speech at the beginning of ROTK, about forgetting the taste of bead etc. Compare to Frodos on the slope of Mt. DOOM. Frodo saved Sam from the water. Sam saved Frodo from the fire. And both Sauron and Frodo lost fingers.
Frodo wrote that the bravest thing Sam ever did was when he asked Rosie to marry him.
Think Frodo got his wires crossed there, he wouldn't have written anything at all if not for bravery in the field of battle...of our dear Sam.

One of the best... nay, THE best trilogy of our lifetime. We will likely never see films like this again. We will likely not see story-telling like this again. I've watched the extended editions every year at least once since they first came out. I watch the extended edition special features too. Couldn't ask for better films.
When everyone at Minis Tireth bows to the hobbits, that was the very last scene they shot before they wrapped up the movie.
Maybe for the scene showing liv Tyler, Viggo Mortensen and all the people bowing, but not the scene for the hobbits. Elijah wood's very last scene was when he was finishing writing his book at Bag End.
She is his niece, not daughter.

@@zzzzzzzzzzzk She and her brother were Theoden's brother's children. His brother was killed in battle and they were left as orphans. The king raised the two of them in his brother's stead.

The bowing scene at the end always chokes me up 😢.
Sam is such a hero... So many different hero types in this story, that's why I love The Lord of the Rings.
At 24:07 , Gandalf didn't summon the Eagles. The moth is a visual shorthand for alerting Gandalf to their presence. Tolkien went backwards and forwards on what the Eagles were, but eventually decided they were lesser Maiar - angels - and was consistent that they answer only to Manwë, the chief of the Valar (archangels). Manwë sent them to join in, and ordered them to carry Gandalf wherever he wanted to go. Back in film 1, the eagle leader rescued Gandalf only because he owed him a favour. They aren't easy to order around.
These stories were written in the 50s, right after WWII. I've always liked to think that the Eagles were like the U.S. The U.S. didn't want to get involved in WWII and came into it late. Once they did arrive, though, they were a massive force in helping turn the tide of the war. That, plus the U.S. national bird is an eagle.
I’ve been on the lookout for your final reaction here. This is such a special trilogy. On top of the wonderful acting and cinematography, the epic musical score and special effects, it’s the heart and deeper meeting of the story that really resonate with you. And I have a few thoughts in that regard. Gandalf told Frodo back in Fellowship that he believed Gollum had a role to play, for good or ill, before the end. Frodo was saying that it was a pity that Bilbo hadn’t killed Gollum when he had the chance. But as Gandolf said it was pity that stayed Bilbo’s hand. In the end, it was very important that Gollum was there, because even Frodo was unable to destroy the Ring on his own. This was such an important part of the story.
And then there is the end of Frodo’s story. It was very perceptive of you to catch on to what was happening there at the end. So much of Tolkien’s early adulthood was shaped by World War I. He lost almost all of the very close circle of friends that he had as a young man. And he saw the lifelong trauma, physically and emotionally that the war had on so many of his generation. The idea of Frodo having wounds too deep to heal is another one of the themes of this story that really resonate with me. The horrors of war and it’s affects on a person feels so well portrayed by Frodo’s experience. I was really curious about whether you would discuss this aspect of the story with your son afterwards. Many reactions have a tough time with Frodo leaving in the end. And while I think it is a beautifully poignant part of the story, I could understand someone your son’s age not really grasping that part. Which in the end might be just fine. It might be something that is more meaningful to him when he re-watches the movies sometime in the future.
I love that final shot of Frodo as he turns back to his friends and gives them that beautiful smile. Just like the immediate relief he felt after the Ring was destroyed, this felt like a similar moment. The idea of how traveling to the Undying Lands would allow him to finally heal from the effects of the Ring is completely expressed in that smile. And then the final moments of the movie, when you hear Frodo’s voiceover telling Sam how he can’t continue to be torn in two between Frodo and his family. That he has to be a whole person for his family, and that his story would go on to enjoy the peace they fought so hard for. As most people seem to do, you two saw that Sam was the true hero of this tale.
The last bit that I want to comment on is Eowyn and Merry killing the Witch King. Eowyn was King Theoden’s niece by the way, not his daughter. One thing that never really got explained in the movies is how just being around the Nazgul had a very harmful effect on others. And while Eowyn and Merry were able together to destroy the Witch King, they both fall gravely ill from their contact with him. Lots of people watching the movie are really confused when for a few moments it looks like Eowyn is actually dead, before Aragorn uses his healing skills on her. In the books there is this lovely part where both Eowyn and Faramir are in what is called the Houses of the Healing. This is where they grew close and is the start of their relationship. Unfortunately, like a fair amount of the books, this was really glossed over in the movie due to time constraints. Therefore, lots of people are a bit surprised at how quick the movie develops their relationship. But it is flushed out in a lovely way in the book.
I always enjoy watching people react to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. But this was a really special experience to see a father and son watching this trilogy for the first time. I know it was a special experience for the two of you as well. Thank you for sharing it with all of us.❤
I have heard that they couldn't get enough male New Zealanders with their own horses for the battle scene, so many of the riders of Rohan are actually females with beards glued on since, apparently, more females have horses in that country. I hope that story is true because it tickles me!!
I'm pretty sure that is true. New Zealand is a fairly small country of about 5.3 million people. And Peter Jackson made it a point to use CGI as little as possible. All the people are real people.
@@PhilBagels All the people in close ups, yes. For the major, thousands of fighters scenes they actually created a piece of software that stitched hundreds of pre-filmed characters together, modelling them over computer-generated dummies. Incredible piece of film work!!

One thing that I miss from the last book that didn’t make it into the movie was that in the middle of the huge Battle of Pelennor Fields, Aragorn & Eomer meet up as they are fighting across the plain. It’s not a huge moment but it could so easily have been included. It kind of solidifies their friendship going forward as they will be brothers in arms for many years to come, subduing the remnants of Sauron’s armies. Glad you both enjoyed it! 😊

That's not true. It explains the 3 eagles in the book and it was not there for gollum. That is just fans wishful thinking.

Tolkien did not rely on his imagination alone he was well read and borrowed on mythology and legend to help fill Middle- Earth.

Good recommendation! I hope they finish the series someday. I heard that there are current plans to make the next movie, The Silver Chair, IIRC. May or may not happen - that's show biz.
@@PhilBagels Netflix, along with The Mark Gordon Company and The C. S. Lewis Company, will reboot the film series, with Greta Gerwig signed in to direct the first two (God knows which first two yet because there are two reading orders.) They are currently in pre-production. The planned Silver Chair movie meant to continue the old series was scrapped due to creative differences between distributor Sony-Tristar and C. S. Lewis' stepson, Douglas Gresham.

At the end of the first film as Sam and Frodo separate from the Fellowship to go to Mordor, Frodo tells Sam "I'm glad you're with me." At the end of this film on the rock surrounded by lava, Frodo tells Sam "I'm glad to be with you."

This is still my favourite trilogy - I saw all three in cinnema when I was 12, 13 and 14 and it was incredible. The whole ending was done masterfully. The climax is building for so long, but it is so worth it. Thanks for sharing your father and son journey with The Lord of the Rings. It’s been premium entertainment from start to finish. My favourite moment was Sam: I can’t carry it for you... but I can carry you!

Galadriel foretold that the ring would take Frodo's life. It did, in the end, just not his physical life, but all else that was his life before becoming the ringbearer. Sam eventually is allowed to go to the gray havens after Rosie's death because he was also a ringbearer, if even for a short while.

Gollum being so important to the story is because the ring could not be destroyed standing there inside the mountain since its control over someone's mind was too great. The only way it could be destroyed was by an accident and that's why Gandalf said he might have an important role to play.
Correction: Eowyn isnt Thoedens daughter....she is his niece. His sisters daughter who is took in after Eowyn and Eomer's parents died.
I highly recommend reading the books. Or listening to the audiobooks. There's more great detail in there. Additional good stuff that the movies left out, characters and events and backstories. If the movies had included all of it, they would've had to make 6 movies, each one twice as long as the extended edition of one of these - and there'd still be stuff left out!
The emotional goodbye scene at the boat had to be reshot as Sam had taken his waistcoat off at lunch and forget to put it back on.......the other three hobbits were not happy that day

I will always maintain that the Scouring of the Shire should not have been cut out of the movies. It's the final development of the 4 Hobbits and shows the contrast of where they began to where they end.
Where would you slot that in at the end of this movie? It'd be horribly depressing, and the general audience would not have liked that at all. Personally never liked that aspect of the book anyway, it always seemed a bit sadistic on Tolkien's part.

@@RexFuturi Perhaps you can tell that to the hundreds of people that gave up their lives for 18 months (or more) to create these movies, at great personal sacrifice for many. You might not have liked the result, but you can't deny the love that was poured into these productions on their part. A once in a lifetime opportunity for all of them.

It’s a huge question, right? Why would Tolkien write SIX books, a prequel and a Bible just to have Frodo come all this way and fail in the end? Imo there are two points he was making. First, it’s about the journey. Frodo got the ring all the way there. He made the effort. He TRIED. Sometimes we get to the end and it doesn’t work out. But we tried. And that’s what matters.
The second point is that the world was saved, not by the sword or by power, but by compassion. Leaving gollum alive. That’s what saved the world and in the end, if we are to save this one, compassion is what will do it.
Imo these are the themes that make this work timeless.

Notice when Gandalf sent 3 eagles, one for Frodo, one for Sam and one for Smigol, because he believed in his redemption until the end. It makes my heart feel heavy.
Epic movie
Can't help but feel dad's seen this before but playing not. He keeps guessing what's going to happen.
The movie sets a lot of it up beforehand tbf
Thank you. I wasn't bugging out. "Pick him up Sam." 10 seconds later, Sam picks him up. One of the most emotional scenes of the entire movie, he takes it in stride as would someone who already saw that scene. "Sam is fighting with him, Frodo is going to have to go for it." A direct contradiction to what he said 20 seconds earlier. The only guy that ever realized that Frodo recharged his batteries already, after Frodo was last scene flat on his back with Golem. The best was at the very end, "They're all going back to the Shire, Sam is all married up." Who thinks like that after Frodo's journey is over with his final look back? Nobody is thinking about the Shire at that point. The screen dims & we see Sam in the Shire with his wife, 5 seconds later. At least another half dozen other call outs I noticed. Yes, I forgive him, because his son needed to watch this.
@@jayhildenbrand7237 Those are all explainable though. The first 2 aren’t even contradictions either, Frodo did need to be carried but now that Sméagol has attacked them there’s no other choice except to try and run no matter what. Sam being married isn’t a very big surprise either.
@@fosterbennington6405 I think not. There are nearly a dozen occasions where he blurted out what's to happen in the next scene. Besides that, did Frodo even fight with Golem, when Golem jumped them? He just fell over, lay flat on his back & got saved by Sam again by a rock being thrown at Golem. "C'mon Mr. Frodo, I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you." He must have gotten a shot of adrenaline off screen & the reactor knew about it. It was plausible as to what they were set to do, but less plausible that Frodo could of mustered the energy to run, let alone walk at that point. That's why it's a fictional movie.
Nobody's thought process is concentrated on the Shire at the point he blurted it out. The concentration is on Frodo's journey & that he ultimately paid the price for it. Only someone that saw the next scene would mention the Shire & Sam being married directly after we see Frodo's eyes.

There are not many of them they live on high mountain peaks and for the most part stay out of the affairs of the world.
They do have a "special" relationship with Gandalf which is too long to go into (work for the same boss (and the moth!)) but Gandalf did not expect them.
They came by the're own volition (perhap strongly suggested by their boss)

I have watched these films sooooo many times, but I'm a Kiwi so it would be wrong for them not to be something I know word for word. I have read the books as well & Tolkien was before his time, worlds, races, and each language all from his imagination. Knowing the both the writing & the screen I know there are characters missing that some people have issue with, & yes afew I would have loved to have seen in action but I still love these movies. Also as a proud Kiwi, yes boy's totally filmed in New Zealand, and all the creations & digital work had it's birth here too. It is a fair tale, though it is sad, as are all the tales of Middle-earth, and yet it may lift up your hearts. -- Aragorn to the Hobbits. But it applies here. The Hobbit movies arent as good but I still reccimmend them. I also recommend the Rings of Power for the same reason, although the Uber Tolkien nerds qill tell you differently. I also strongly recommend the.books, which i read to all my children.
