  • A small group presumably just put together for the purposes of recording, The Four Stars were George Elliott (guitar), Freddie Gardener (clarinet), Eric Siday (violin) and Billy Munn (piano). The only record I have by this group is HMV BD 5129, recorded around September 1936, featuring "One rainy afternoon" and the better known "Take my heart". "One rainy afternoon" is from the Ida Lupino film of the same name that passed almost without comment on its release, and although I don't know of any other British recorded versions of this song, it probably was recorded in the US at the time. Interestingly Freddie Gardener also takes the vocal on both of these tracks, singing in a style similar to that of Denny Dennis, the only record I know that features his voice. So something of a curiosity, this is the only copy of this record I have ever seen, obtained 30+ years ago in a local secondhand shop.
