    11:00 Society Techtree is very similar to science and industrial trees From Endless Space. Notice that further in, middle techs give you bonuses to exploitation of types of regions. Main difference is you can settle regions, as in Endless Space you couldn't settle planet types, BUT even if you settle a region or annex it, if you don't have exploitation tech you cannot reap its benefits (+% or per citizen resources) - you can just build on it but those regional terrain type bonuses are locked (aside from the special structure).
    Doctrines work exactly the same way as like laws in Endless Legend, only difference is that they require different resource to run.
    You lose Happiness in your cities just by the population growth (you could say population points are also like Burrogh Streets from Endless Legend combined). Normaly that's the main issue with your current faction when it comes to economy management as it's supposed to be quick on expanding (native tech tree boosts and multiplies food production).
    Notice - you can put two heroes into one army, hell you can even make army composed only of heroe units if you have enough.
    17:20 - Breaking pacts gives you penalty to your global reputation, meaning any dyplomacy with any other minor or major faction will be much, much harder (you get negative reputation that handicaps you till the end of the scenario, also in some cases morale of certain units in your army might drop and cause issues on the battlefield).
    Sorry for long posts, thought some tips might be welcomed. No spoilers just friednly tips and tricks since AoW has some interesting mechanics you're not used to yet and I'd love you to play your best SB. ;)

    Endless Legend came out five years ago and it still looks so much more aesthetically pleasing than this does.

      Art-style is the keyword here. I think this game looks ok in general but the colors seem really off. Like the whole game has some kind of bland filter on.

    • @bodnotbod
      @bodnotbod 5 років тому +1

      @@Mulzaro89 Yes. Too many of the colours have... OK, I'm no colour expert... but too similar saturation, brightness and hue? ALL THREE OF THOSE? Something like that. I *think*, though I'm not sure, that there's a variety of planets, so maybe some are more pleasant to look at.

    Thanks for playing this! Hope you're enjoying yourself!
    The power of your militia is listed under the name of a city when you select it. At the time you were wondering about it, it was less than 300.
    You might end up dealing more damage to units if you vomit first, removing some of their armour before sending in the melee units to attack them rather than the other way around.
    I am enjoying watching you play and looking forward to the next episode!

    You'll probably have a better time on the next go round as is since you can customize your starting commander for more intent and flavour instead of just going stock default.

    2:55 Your concern for a tedious mechanic like bad autoresolve is good to say out loud and document. Nice to know what worries to expect from players.
    For me, combat screen wouldn't be so annoying if enemy units would just move all at once instead of one by one. I can't stand when games pause play to execute the same animation for the hundredth time.
    59:00 Looks like a search for `Ability Type: Passive` will pull a comprehensive list.
    1:02:25 This games unit designs are so cool

    This game is easy to play but harder to master than the Amplitude's games.
    Autoresolver is trustworthy in most cases - AI tries for both sides not to make any silly mistakes, you can check the replays. Point when you shouldn't trust autoresolve is when there are any types of hazards in the region the battle takes place.
    You should pay way closer attention to the enemy types. Just as you can modify your units - so does the enemy (like in Endless Legend with Spears vs Swords, but in here it's also about rezistance types), from what some of my buddies told me, even roaming armies have mods so to identical groups can have different damage type rezistances. Autoresolver takes just overall units values and levels into consideration as points of power - not the fact that the enemy is highly rezistant to your weapon type and vice versa.
    I've played my fair share (years upon years) of Age of Wonders 2 and battle mechanics here resemble it the most from whole series - remember that any army adjecent to one that fights - gets pulled in into the battle. Notice that power is your only upkeep resource for your army so having more than one tagging along with your main force is never a bad idea (yes less XP but main trait of your race/faction is that if they get clumped next to each other - they receive a defensive shield).
    Also it's a good habit to always fire with ranged units first so your meele don't become that -30% hit obstacle between you and the target (friendly fire is a thing). BUT you can use it also to your adventage - if you have two enemy units and the one in the front has low HP - aim with your ranged units at the one in the back. If your units have multiple shots per turn (as well as action points, that's what "repeatable" stands for like you assumed at 18:25 ) with their weapon, there's a chance the enemy in the front will get hit (as an obstacle) and you will kill both of them. If the guy in the back has lower chance of beeing hit - that's because projectile has a chance of hitting the one in the front first (so basicly you get two hit rolls instead of one with your projectile attacks). ;)

    Hey SB, just wanna let you know the first territory you annexed has a AI on the garden thing. And when they are on it. The garden doesn't give its +10 food benefit.

  • @jamescraine180
    @jamescraine180 5 років тому +1

    Hmm, well, I'm a little behind on the series, so you may have figured this out by now, I'm not sure. I also haven't played more than about 10 minutes of the new age of wonders, so things may have changed since aow3. But, as far as the strength on debuffs goes (like the bleeding on the ravager ripclaw gash), the game will essentially do a dice roll + your attack strength (12 for the ripclaw gash) versus a dice roll + the defender's resistance, with 10 considered to be an average resistance. I don't actually see a resistance stat for the units in this game, so it might be that everything has a resistance of 10 unless they have some special trait that modifies that. So, if ripclaw gash was strength 10, it should have either a 50% chance to stick or a little less than that, depending on how ties are resolved. I don't have a chart handy for the percentages associated with a +2 advantage, but I would assume that the bleed on the ripclaw gash has a 60ish% chance of sticking on a unit with "normal" resistances?
    Edit: grammar

    You can move commanders under the same banner into a group of 6 together making ur heroes lvl together but in so doing making u have one less normal unit in ur 6 person/alien group and being together verse ranged enemies activate ur swarm shield and gain ranged shield defense buff only for they bug race

    The Auto resolver has always been the biggest issue with these game with me having to constantly fight the same battle when I want to start a new game I would say 4 out of 5 times it's fine but that 1 time it kills half your army in a battle where nothing should have died

  • @Mulzaro89

    Age of Wonders games have always been heavily about the tactical combat. Auto resolve is better in this game, however, because I believe you get global exp for every unit like in Endless Legend for example. In previous titles you always needed to funnel the exp to the right units and it was probably the most important reason to play manual combat. Now if you heavily outnumber the enemy, there is no drawback in using auto-combat I think.
    Another problem with auto combat in the earlier games was that some races are a lot better at it. In Age of Wonders III for example, orcs are a lot stronger than goblins if you only use auto combat. Not sure how it is in this game.

      The difference in faction unit effectiveness when controlled by the AI isn't huge, but it is there. Range units have an easier time surviving against weaker neaut ral armies, and gimmick heavy ones, like Assemby's regenerating on melee hits starting infantry, are better off controlled manually.
      Tye biggest difference in autoresolve battle is AI's hesitance to spent resources on tactical operations. I wish there was a menu for setting up permissions regarding that, based on enemy army strength or something.

    to be fair about the autoresolve: it is for situation in which you do not care how you would solve a fight. You autoresolved a 700vs540 fight and lost 3/5 units, sounds roughly like the share of power you had.
    Also the combat seems like fun, you played for an hour last episode and fought like ... 3 minutes of it?
    From a game design standpoint i dont think the autoresolver should be there at all because "oh you can skip this part if you dont want to bother" is kind of sending the message that the tactical combat isnt a part of the game

    auto-resolve in AoW games has /never/ been viable unless you have an absolutely crushing advantage. it's like handing off command of the troops to a drunk toddler.

    • @Daemonworks
      @Daemonworks 5 років тому +1

      to be fair, the same is true of almost all games that have an equivalent system.
