Wife and I retired, late 60’s, sold our Las Vegas Home March 2023 and moved to our our apartment in Southern Spain. After 3 months we leave the Schengen. Either back to the US and/or Mexico. We just completed one month touring Turkey, one month in Ireland, and one month in Scotland/UK. Back in Spain for one month. Friends and family shake their heads asking how we do it. It’s a learning curve but discovery, learning, foods, culture, people are what it’s all about. We are living our best lives now. Thank you both for your presentation. Very well done.
We get so excited when we read posts like this. The imagination and gumption you have is commendable. We love living abroad traveling. It’s a great way to live your life, even with the shaking of heads. We get it too! Thanks for the comment! John & Bev
We live in Las Vegas and are now looking for places to relocate... We will live 3 months in one location and then redirect, as necessary - we have a dog, so that makes things more complicated
It is 5 a.m. in California, and what am I doing? Watching the most sensible and cute couple on UA-cam. You two are awesome; you are giving us good advice, and you are doing such a great job. Not only are you enjoying your life, but you are also making it easy for others to decide about their travel. Thank you.
My grandparents did this long, long ago. They kept it simple. Canada, every Summer, Mexico every Winter. The rest of the time Massachusetts. This was in the 1960's through to 1990. They did big travel trailer excursions with their friends. They took me one Summer with the "Holiday Rambler Club". We did a week long rally ( big endless party ) at the Indie Speedway grounds then drove Cross Country, all the way up through British Columbia, then all the way across Canada. What a blast. To be bit by the travel bug at 13. They were such a blessing to my life!
We LOVE this story. We hope to be an inspiration for travel for all of our grandkids someday as they get a little older. Thanks for sharing. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
As a former military family, we've always loved living in different countries long enough to appreciate the local culture and make life-long friends. Tourists don't know what they're missing. I like the term "Flex-pat living." 👏 That is what we are doing at this moment. We're enjoying it tremendously. love your videos 🙌 ❤🌏 keep'em coming.
I am a former Army brat and lived in Panama as a kid. Now we have a small second home in Mexico. I like to travel but there is nothing like actually living abroad. In a way, tourist travel is just another form of consumption. It's fun, but just doesn't open your mind and heart the way actually living in another place does, especially if you also work on learning the language.
This is exactly what I have decided to do based on 2 years of thousands of expat videos. I was constantly changing my mind on the best place for me. Then I realized I am not going to know until I visit . I plan to spend 1-2 years slow travel before I decide. I am going to rent my home in the us out in case after all these travels I decide to come back Hopefully I will start in the fall
In the same boat. Think I may put the paid off house in a trust. If my kids or just one pays the maintenance, is cheaper than renting in Florida. Can't wait to see the world.
This is my dream but my husband is not as keen. We downsized a few years ago so we have a very simple life at home to allow us as many options as possible. I'm hoping as we start visiting some of these places, maybe he'll fall in love with some of them. Or maybe I'll do some adventuring on my own. We're doing Japan later this year and I'm doing Chile (pumas in the wild!) on my own next. Lots of Europe next year so here we go!
I go alone first to scout things out. Once my husband sees that I like a place, he’s more open to go. We had a ball for five months in Mexico last winter.
I love that idea!!! I could not keep a home, but living in a country for 90 days or 6mos (panama comes to mind) is definitely doable. No HOAs, no maintenance, no calls on the weekend that the a/c went out or the pool has a leak. I went to panama for 10 days and I know I would LOVE to go back. I have plans to sell my home and do it when I retire at 62. 1 year and 11 months.
This is exactly what I’m planning to do in retirement (in 18 days!). As a Canadian in Ontario, I’m allowed to leave for 7 months a year and still retain my OHIP (Ontario medicare). Most Canadians must be in their home province for 6 months, but for Ontario it is 5 months residency to retain OHIP. We also can take a year away every 5 years and still retain our provincial health coverage. I do get travel insurance as well. I plan on spending most of my time in my condo in Costa Rica, but will slow travel when it is rented. Love the term Flex-pat living.
Great to hear. I live in Ontario and didn’t realize we are now up to 7 months to retain OHIP. Thanks. I don’t want full time travel, but this video was great. I’d love to know more about costs for travelling, say 3 months at a time in some of the countries mentioned. 🇨🇦
@@amitabhagupta4224 If you Google the question you are asking, you will get an answer. For example, after reading the first comment, I googled “OHIP residency requirements” and there were all kinds of answers about OHIP for questions I didn’t think of asking🇨🇦
You are definitely not crazy. Best of luck with your journey and many wonderful adventures! And we think it is always good to share our videos. 😉😊 Safe travels, John and Bev retirementtravelers.com
The rising cost of flights alone makes this an excellent way to travel. It also ticks a lot of sustainable travel boxes, such as slow travel, contributing to the local economy, learning through travel, etc.
I call your Flexpat Life TraveLiving. The same idea. In fact, we will go on a 7-month journey from August this year to visit 10 countries, not exactly for 3 months at a time, but we will explore quite a bit. I enjoy your travel life and keep up the good work! In August, I will hit the 100th country mark when I arrive in Bulgaria. We will keep on traveling until we no longer can.
Guess the UA-cam algorithm is right on! My wife and I have been casually talking about different semi-retirement options the last year or so. We started discussing exactly what you both are doing! I wanted to move to Portugal, she doesn’t want to be tied to a single location and return every year. And we both want to keep our home in the states. Thought about renting our place seasonally and picking a different country or 2 each year for 3-4 months! Glad to see there’s proof of concept, Flex-patting sounds perfect!! I’ll be binging your channel in the coming days now 🤝
Love your term Flex-Pat as it sums up my husband and I lifestyle. We're just completing our 90 days in Scandinavia (split between Sweden & Finland) with plans to head to Colombia & then Ecuador. Slowing down our travels has really allowed us to transition from being a tourist to living abroad. Like you we have found it to be a much more affordable way to live as well.
We love that term - flex-pat! We started doing this style of travel in Nicaragua and then Costa Rica, but we've also done it in Europe and Asia. It's great being able to experience a different way of life and you can definitely do it very affordably. We also like the reduced red tape and the variety that you get from this style of living 😀
I live flex Pat life! Right now I am in Vienna for a month and before this I was in Nice, France for a month! I usually pick shoulder seasons to do this! I have done Costa Rica for 3 months, Cap D’Ail for 3 months, Buenos Aires for 3 and 2 months different years, Medellin for 2 months, spain for 1 month but second month I had to fly home for medical reason, Split Croatia for a month then right into Budapest for a month. Now I am in my 70s and the health insurance is much more expensive so that is a drawback and don’t usually get it! I use these places as bases and then travel by day or weekend or such to others places in area! I usually only eat out once a day but sometimes not at all and sometimes all meals (not breakfast). I join a gym or expats group in that city to meet people!
Great video!! I don't like the word "retired"....but I took my pensions and left the utility industry in Southern California three years ago at the age of 50. I moved to Belize, a country I fell in love with years ago and where I already owned property. There is a lot of wisdom contained in this video! I am nearing the end of my quest for permanent residency here in Belize, which is a long and complicated process. Basically like having a green card in the US. I have never heard the term "flex-pat" before, but that is my plan for the future. When I finish building my home here in Belize, it will be my home base. I want to spend time in a lot of other countries. You can always spend more when traveling, but when you focus on actually experiencing the country and living like a local, it's often much, much cheaper than you would think. Eat local food )) Take the bus )) Go to the National Parks for $5 instead of paying $200 per person to take a tourist van to the same place!! The vast majority of people all over are really nice folks just living their lives. If you are humble and sincere, you will have a wonderful time pretty much wherever you go.
You guys should spend a couple months in Florianopolis, Brazil. It’s a beautiful island that attracts a lot of expats. Safe, clean, organized, and cheap of course. I’m biased because I’m from there but I think you would love it.
Once again another informative and “you can do this” video. I’m in the process of selling everything I own and moving to a “lock the door and leave” place. Your videos have been immensely helpful to me.
Hi Shan. You must be excited at being so close to making flex-pat life a reality. We’re slowly working towards that point. Would love to learn more about these “lock the door and leave” places. What exactly is that and how does it work? Thank you in advance.
John and Bev, we’ve been watching you for over a year now. Your content is making us have some fun conversations about our future. Thanks so much for sharing such valuable information.
Wonderful. We want you to have a FUN future. Glad you are enjoying our channel and hope you can follow along on our journey around the world. Safe travels and many blessings. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
My husband and I recently retired earlier this year. Our goal is to live this same life as John and Bev. We really enjoy watching their travels and beautiful videos!
Curious about what you would suggest doing with your base home in the United States while you are traveling. Would you rent out your home while you are abroad? Or do you just shut everything down? Our home is almost paid off, but there are still expenses to pay like insurance and taxes. Flex living sounds right up my alley. We have extensively researched, residential visas and you are correct, bureaucratic nightmare. Plus, our families would be much more receptive to the idea of us just traveling, but coming back. Our parents are elderly and they are worried that they will never see us again if we move abroad.
I maintain my permanent residence in Ensenada, Mexico, a seaside village 50 miles south of San Diego. I retired at 47 and bought a home in a resort community with mostly retired American expats. My monthly fixed expenses are around USD 400, including all utilities and HOA. So, I have been able to live off my savings for last 11 years. I have also opened a small restaurant to supplement my income and also to stay busy. I will be eligible to receive SS in 3 more years, at which time I hope to do what you guys are doing..travel!! I agree that it makes perfect sense to stay put at one location for an extended period of time, given the cost of airfare!
This is exactly what I want to do/planning on doing! Right now it is hard to be away from work for more than a week or two. (Both my husband and I are self employed business owners/professionals) In fact we just took our first 2 week trip ever to Croatia and I cant tell you how much the extra few days made to our enjoyment. My main reason to retire is so I can take longer trips and try to really engage in the culture. I have no interest in owning another home (here in the states or abroad) and I would prefer to explore different areas/countries while we are still healthy and able to do so. My husband is not interested in extensive trips or living out of a suitcase but I think I can convince him for 2-3 months twice a year...and maybe getting those last min specials when available. Love your channel! So glad I found it.
We are glad you found it too. We have a variety of content you might find helpful for this lifestyle. Safe travels and many blessings to you both, John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
Wow, “Flex-Pat, that is definitely me! I absolutely love this video because this is exactly what I wanted to do. Stay abroad for 6mos then come back to the U.S for six months. I even Rent a room out of my house for supplement income and when I’m gone he has the whole place to himself while his rent pays my bills at home. I just would like to stay till my expired visa or passport per country allows me to stay. I have 2 more years till I retire and can’t wait to explore. Great Video, you guys read my mind. I’m telling everyone that I will be a “ FLEX-PAT
Flexpat ? I've been doing this for the past 10 years in Latin America from Mexico to Argentina . The hardest part : being able to speak the local language such as Spanish in Latin America. The good part : new experiences and making new friends !
I like the term Flexpat! My husband and I have long planned to do just that when we retire. My question is how do you secure a place to rent before you arrive to your next destination? I think a few commenters have asked the same question. Thank you.
My husband and I have talked about living abroad for 3 months for years. Its so hard to just up and quit our jobs and just do it, but this adventure is coming for us very soon. I love your videos, thanks for sharing.
First of all, your kids are right. You both are the cute retired travelers… 😊😊😊 Also, Flexpat - awesome word ! I think it will click and catch on. It is so inspiring that you do what you do… not just traveling like tourists but immersing yourselves in the culture of the country.. More power to both of you and keep on traveling and posting.. Love 💕 love 💕 what you do !!!
Hubby and I moved to Singapore last August - and have been exploring Southeast Asia... We have discussing the very thing that you mention here - for as long as we can - once we retire we would spend time in various countries under their 90day visas. Such a great video and discussion.
Congrats on the move to Singapore. We loved our visit there and want to return. Glad you enjoyed the video and hope you can follow along on our journey. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
This is exactly what I plan to do! I am 3-4 years from retirement but will be a flexpat after that! In fact I am contemplating working remotely from another country for 6-8 weeks in 2024 and each year until retirement. Thanks so much for the info!
Love your approach and I'm thinking it makes sense for me. I would think living 3 months in one country would also give you some time to rest up too. In the past when I would travel abroad with family for 2 weeks or less, I was always fighting jet lag and everyday just beat from all that we felt like we had to cover each day. Flex Pat (think you should trade mark this word lol) allows you to relax and be present in the moment instead of worrying everyday about the schedule and stressing over whether you covered it and got your moneys worth.
This is a pace that allows for rest and integration into the community. We hope to do this after our faster travels are over. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
First of all, great job! Your tips and advice are spot on, true, and worth following. My husband and I have been doing pretty much the same for the past 4 years, except we kept our home in the USA. We travel 6 (not consecutive) months a year, and we've been to or lived at most of the places you have. The one thing we haven't been able to find is short term rentals outside Airbnb or similar, especially at low budget locations. Most rentals won't come furnished, or include the Internet, not to mention that utilities are also not included. We always make sure a rental has a/c or heat, depending on the season, as well as a washing machine. We are currently in Italy, then Romania, then Poland, then. . . We will be looking for you on our travels! Blessings!
Thanks so much for the kind words and following along with us. Hopefully our paths will cross someday. Happy journeys, John and Bev retirementtravelers.com
One of the greatest enjoyment of watching your show is that we (my wife and I) think of some retirement idea, concern, plan or whatever and … boom we find a video discussing exactly the same issue. Without having yet started FlexPat life, I have already lived 5 countries and travelled to 75, I am ready to go. Only holdup is renting out our big house. Keep up the good work and maybe we’ll cross paths some day (maybe on bicycles)
Thank you thank you thank you. I plan to retire in a few months and me and my husband have been talking about slow travel, ie. 2-3 months at a time in a certain location. You just validated our plans and took away a lot of apprehension. Very helpful tips especially the medicare supplement for global coverage. Much appreciated.
That's exactly what I want to do in retirement! I think eight to 10 months a year in other countries with two to four months at home with family is perfect. Thank you for sharing!
Well lived in Queens, N.Y. married in 1975 moved to an island. Been here since then had two children one more here. Have four grandkids. We have worked here until now we are retired. Kids married we had a big house sold it gave away or sold some. Bought a nice modern apt. Also have a weekend villa where we go every week end. We have traveled 17 cruises. One month in Europe lovely. Gone to Canada to Quebec lovely all. Gone to Alaska. To whay your doing is great. We have done and we are older bad knee could not. Travel as we can here...beautiful Island, also visit N.Y. Love your information.
This seems like a good way to get a realistic idea of what it would be like to live in several different countries before permanently moving to one. This also can be combined with medical tourism so that you can be treated or recover over several months in the same location instead of having to return home right after the procedure.
Thanks and great idea on the medical tourism. That is a big part of the decision for many people. We are trying to get some medical care are various places around the world. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
This is exactly what I want to do. I'm just a few years off from retirement and can work from any location, so I want to start scouting locations to possibly move or just be a Flexpat (love the name). This so appeals to me as I'm not ready to pack up and leave the U.S. permanently, and it seems that was the focus of so many YT videos from people fed up with the states. I love the idea of immersive slow travel and flexibility to have the best of both worlds. I'm getting ready to rent out my home and travel over the next year doing exactly what you recommend - 3 months at each location. Thanks for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed the video and good luck on your journey of travel. Hope you can follow along with us on our adventures. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
Very informative, a coworker told me about it a few years ago, and since I wanted to be a flex-pat because my wife still has many years to go before she retires, and I do not want to stay home during winter and shovel snow, so this is a great and flexible choice!
This was one of my most favorite videos of yours. The Flex-Pat term is great -thank you so much for your insight! Happy travels to you both and thank you for your continued inspiration.
Awesome! Thank you! So glad you enjoyed the video and this concept. Hope you can follow along on our journey around the world. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
Oh my word! This is exactly what me and my husband are thinking of doing. But we have a few more years to go before retirement so for now, we just visit places for a weeks or so. This is vlog is very helpful for us to get ready, especially the medical coverage part. Thanks!
We've been waiting to start this. We're both retired, and the only thing holding us back has been our aged dog. We'd love to travel with her, but besides the extra complications, there's a ton of extra gear involved in bringing a dog on a roving retirement. (Her crate, dishes, food, treats, leashes, grooming gear, doggie bed, toys, medicines, official paperwork, etc. Well, we finally decided we've waited long enough. When our lease is up, we're taking her with us, we'll just figure it out. Yes, it'll be harder, but we're not getting any younger and the window of opportunity is going to close if we wait too long.
@@gracealleman4102 we had to find an option for our pet. Life is short and sometimes you have to be selfish and make those very tough decisions. Pets are animals, no are not jettisoning a human relative. Lots of great families are willing to take on, or care or your pets while you go.
That’s my plan. I Live abroad a few months per year. Obtained several residencies to several countries. When I’m back in my My Home country, I rent a room to traveling nurses.
Excellent video. For many, retirement is a continuous process of trial and error. Successes and failures. Flex-Pat sounds like a great way to squeeze the juice out of retirement without taking extraordinary risk. Well done.
Love the term “flex-pat”. I’ve been doing the flex-pat thing since 2010, don’t know how I’ve been getting by without the word for it. Also absolutely love your presentation. Both of you are just adorable, especially how you interact between yourselves. Safe travels. Subscribed. Cheers.
@@RetirementTravelers I am a bit of a slave to my everchanging life phases. At first it was world capitals, museums, architecture and local foods. Can’t remember a capital that I didn’t like, other than Rabat in Morocco. After a few years I went on a somewhat more adventurous slant. Riding a motorbike down the western coast of India and then up the eastern coast. Trekking in Nepal for months. Crossing Argentina on a motorbike. Night diving in Thailand. But with age I have mellowed out a bit. Now my new favorites are coffee houses and pubs in Czechia, Hungary, Greece, Thailand, and Vietnam. I now spend one to three months in each country and could never quite get up to your speed with weekly moves . Tried it your way last fall in Eastern Europe for a couple of months and realized it was a bit too fast for me. I guess I am just a crawler, not a runner. :)). Cheers.
I don't think travell full time will be for me because I need my own base to be happy. The video today come to reach me. I love the idea of flex-pat. This is exactly what i was serching for my future retirement . Thanks!
Hi Bev & John, I came across your channel a few weeks ago and have enjoyed your videos. This one is very nicely done! When we decided to retire, traveling 6 months out of the year was part of our plans. We enjoy our lifestyle in the USA but having lived abroad for many years, we also loved living a European lifestyle. So as you point out the best of both worlds. I believe you gave very sound data points to get anyone started on implementing living abroad part-time. Thank you - keep enjoying your travels.
Fantastic. You can do it. We also have a number of videos on retirement, living debt free, etc that you might find helpful. Good luck on your retirement planning. Safe travels, John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
Thank you for this vedio, we will be trying Flex-pat living in Thailand for 60days in Aug. Have decided to travel the whole country to see which area we like the best to come back for a longer stay.
Love love love your channel and ideas you present!!! Yes I’d love to live abroad in the US first and then my husband and I will try internationally. Thank you for your wonderful ideas, tips, and videos! Blessings on your travels!! 👋🏼👍🏼love the flex Pat term!!!
Ding, Ding,Ding ! This is what we have discussed and planned for years now. When we pull the plug on work early, Still be in our 50s, we are going to spend a couple months in a more temperate location during the summers to get away from the heat where we live and likewise in the winters go to warmer places. We have a budget that will allow us to do so for 4 to 6 months at a time. Then spend holidays, some spring, fall at home area where it is lovely those times of year.
So glad to find you guys. My husband and I started this type of travel 1 1/2 years ago. Looking forward to watching all of your videos to learn how to be better!
I love flex-pat living. That's exactly what my husband and I are planning to do when we retire... now you gave us an official name for it. I love it!!! Super excited to hear all about your adventures 😅
We are newly flex pats too! We love travelling and will really enjoy immersing ourselves in different countries and cultures. It would be lovely if you would consider doing a live q and a on UA-cam where we can ask questions. I look forward to all of your vlogs 💕😀
Thank you for mentioning the medical coverage when one is out of the country. Thank you. This type of travel is what I am interested in doing when I fully retire. Yes, I’m not keen on going to “touristy” areas. I am low key and enjoy just enjoy getting to know the locals and blend into the environment.
Questions: 1) What do you do about medical care? I wouldn't want to pay for Medicare if I'm not in the US most of the year, and every country you visit will have a different medical care system - how do you handle that? 2) Do you stay in short term housing when you are in the US too? A long-term lease would mean paying double for housing, at least where I live (leases here typically don't allow subletting), so would be prohibitively epensive.
We have received medical/dental care in several different countries. We still have retiree medical coverage. We stay with kids, other family or hotels when in the US. Our kids are spread out, so we travel around when in the US as well. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
First of all, y'all are both adorable. You popped up in my feed yesterday so I haven't seen most of your videos yet but I love your channel just for the downsizing inspo alone. I do have some questions. 1) How do you deal with language barriers? 2) Are you seeing the low- and mid-cost countries getting more expensive like inflation in the US? 3) How many single female travelers do you come across? The older I get the more of a scared little old lady I'm becoming. 🤣 Love the video! Thanks for sharing your experiences with us.
Thanks and great questions. Google translate has worked well enough on language issues for us. Some countries surprised us on cost. Panama was more expensive than we thought for example. We have encountered many single female travelers of all ages!!! Thanks again and hope you can follow along with us on our journey. Safe travels and many blessings. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
As an old guy, (almost 70) and having been a US Military Service Man for 10 years and traveled all over the world with the US Navy, I don't want to pat myself on the back but I had this very same idea 30 years ago. I have traveled all over Europe this very same way. It is a good way to go if one packs lite. Because of this, I have a very good idea, (4 different places to choose from), now that I am seriously thinking about one LAST trip to Europe and plan to stay there till my expiration date,
this is something my spouse and i would love to do. i feel there are a couple countries in which i could live for many years and yet, before i can determine that properly, there is so much world to explore. and i may as well flexpat while i am still pretty healthy. thank you for your channel. it's the content i didn't know i needed! 💗 i also love your approach to immerse versus "superficial" travel.
I've heard that people get travel burnout if you constantly bounce from one country to another. People need a place to have a daily routine. After 6 months abroad, it's often good to go home for a break.
Awesome! This is my dream with a name! It has been what I speak about with my husband for retirement in three years. In the meantime we continue to travel as we can. So wonderful to look forward to this type of travel! God bless you on your journey 🙏. Thank you for sharing. I will be following to get pointers for our travels! ❤
Love this video. Learn a new word today, ‘Flexpat’. We will called ourselves ‘Grey nomad flexpats’ from now on. 😂 My wife and I are doing something similar but on a smaller scale. As Aussies, we love being at home in Melbourne in Autumn but the rest of the time, we travel. I like the idea that we live like a ‘resident’ in a country. Much cheaper rent wise, slower pace and increased enjoyment. I like your thinking. I noticed that we were spending less while travelling overseas than in Melbourne. Amazing way to save money!
Great video and great advice. We are retirement travellers and have some extra suggestions. If you like animals look at house sitting, it’s free in return for looking after their house and dog or cat. House sits can be found for longer times like a month or more. The UK is particularly short of sitters and you could house sit there for the entire 3 months moving from sit to sit. We have just completed a house sit of 5 weeks in Oslo. The other Possiblity is monthly AirBnb. It’s surprising how low long term stays can be. Btw we have nearly completed 8 months away from home in New Zealand, going home for summer!
Flexpat. I like that. That's what I plan to do when I retire. Six months in a foreign country, six months at home, six months in a different foreign country, six more months at home...lather, rinse, repeat.
Please keep making videos, that’s were you both have a niche. You both seam like very sensible and conservative, so I trust everything you say. When most people will think it’s crazy idea, I can have them watch your videos.
Lovely video and now I have a term for a plan I decided upon years ago. After traveling, living and working in Asia, Europe and Central America I decided after my son is off to college I would split my time between living in the US and abroad. For me the decision to do so was based upon the fact that while having enjoyed the places I have visited, I never found one particular location I would want to fully commit to by moving there. Flex-pat living is the way to go. Best of luck and safe travels.
We love your channel. If possible can you do a video on how to prevent getting sick from the local food and water, as this is one of my worries. We admire your courage and your organizational skills and love learning from you both x
Thanks so much for following along. Thanks for the suggestion and we plan on doing something similar to that in the future. Happy trails, John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
This is a great idea. My husband and I are retired and have looked into leaving the USA. But... this looks like a better idea. My biggest worry was the downside of other countries. And they are there.
Again, thanks for the great info. I’ve subscribed and I look forward to checking out those two videos you’ve just recommended - and probably your others too.
Lots of great options out there for this type of travel. You can definitely do it. Thanks and hope you are enjoying our channel. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
Yes, I agree all the great points in "Flex-pat living"! We are so ready to retire and start international travel but not ready to give up our house we work so hard for. Please share with us "Low and Mid Cost" countries or towns. Thank you so much.
Thanks. There are so many places that come to mind in South and Central America, the Balkan countries and Southeast Asia. There are also specific websites where you can compare cost of living from your area to a proposed location around the world. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
Wow…feeling inspired. Love this video. I love the idea of being a Flex-pat. I found myself sitting here taking notes. Thanks for a great list of country recommendations for a low to mid range experience. Next year I hope to semi retire so living somewhere else for 3 months would be a really exciting thing to try. Thank you for the inspiration and quality that you bring to UA-cam with your videos 😘🤗
You're so welcome! Thanks for following along with our channel. We love to inspire and help any way we can. Safe travels and many blessings, John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
Thank you so much! So glad you are enjoying our channel and hope we can be helpful to you. Safe travels and many blessings. John and Bev retirementtravelers.com/
Funny, the last video of yours I watched, you were moving every week! So is this a change now? Have you changed your travel style. This is more like what I do as it’s more cost effective. Really enjoying your helpful content. You have so many good ideas.
Still moving fast, but two different timeframes for us. We want to see all the world for the next couple of years and move quickly. @@RetirementTravelers sounds perfect. You really do think through things thoroughly. We can learn a lot from you. But is it actually retirement if you’re building a business?
Absolutely stunning video! I am sending this out to a bunch of friends. As a former diplomat, I see this retirement “scheme” making a lot of sense and I think it will work for many folks at lose ends in retirement. Since I just found this video, I’m now delving into the others you have posted. Great job!
U guys r very lucky that u have a global travel freedom to enjoy without visas and long immigrations procedures. I lived in the UK for few years but won't able to get british passport but I love traveling too see all the cities and villages on the planet earth and meet with lovely people and taste local foods. And learn for lifetime new things. Wish me luck to secure a passport of any visa free countries. Happy traveling.😀💐👍
I live in Costa Rica for five to six months a year. I"ve been doing it for years. I do have to make a border run to Nicaragua after 90 days. I live in a motorhome in the US when I go back.
This is AWESOME, guys. I've never heard of this idea!!! Great tip to call the local realtor for a better deal on room and board. Can't wait to share this video!
John & Bev
Well done 👍🏻 🍀
Congratulations! Curious how you handle health insurance? That seems to be one of our top 3 concerns.
What do you do for housing when you return to the US?
We live in Las Vegas and are now looking for places to relocate... We will live 3 months in one location and then redirect, as necessary - we have a dog, so that makes things more complicated

I am going to rent my home in the us out in case after all these travels I decide to come back
Hopefully I will start in the fall
Great. Best of luck on your journey to find the perfect place.

We meet many female solo travelers!

Thanks and good luck. You can definitely do it.

Wonderful. We hope you enjoy your flex-pat adventures.

The rising cost of flights alone makes this an excellent way to travel. It also ticks a lot of sustainable travel boxes, such as slow travel, contributing to the local economy, learning through travel, etc.

Love your term Flex-Pat as it sums up my husband and I lifestyle. We're just completing our 90 days in Scandinavia (split between Sweden & Finland) with plans to head to Colombia & then Ecuador.
Well done Alex.
Great job! Those are some great places and we really love the shoulder seasons as well.

Good advice.
So very true Russ Johnson; perfectly stated. 👍🏽👍🏽 👏🏼 👏🏼

I have the same question
I have the same question also!
Thanks for sharing your experiences. Sounds amazing.

Good for you. There are some countries that are pretty dog friendly. Safe travels and enjoy.

:)). Cheers.

Yep planning to do this as soon as possible. Just consider it to be nomadic. But I like your new word and I’m embracing it.
Thanks. Enjoy and safe travels.

Thank you for this vedio, we will be trying Flex-pat living in Thailand for 60days in Aug. Have decided to travel the whole country to see which area we like the best to come back for a longer stay.
Great idea. Hope you enjoy our Thailand video, if you haven't seen it. We had a great time.

Wonderful. Good luck with your adventures.

I love flex-pat living. That's exactly what my husband and I are planning to do when we retire... now you gave us an official name for it. I love it!!! Super excited to hear all about your adventures 😅
Thanks so much and glad you love the concept. Hope you can follow along on our journey around the world.

We are newly flex pats too! We love travelling and will really enjoy immersing ourselves in different countries and cultures. It would be lovely if you would consider doing a live q and a on UA-cam where we can ask questions. I look forward to all of your vlogs 💕😀
That's great and thanks. We have not done any as of yet, but might consider. Thanks for suggesting.

Thank you for mentioning the medical coverage when one is out of the country. Thank you. This type of travel is what I am interested in doing when I fully retire. Yes, I’m not keen on going to “touristy” areas. I am low key and enjoy just enjoy getting to know the locals and blend into the environment.
Thanks. Glad you are enjoying our channel.
Happy trails,

Love the video!

Because of this, I have a very good idea, (4 different places to choose from), now that I am seriously thinking about one LAST trip to Europe and plan to stay there till my expiration date,
Thanks for sharing and thank you for your service. Best of luck with your choice.

this is something my spouse and i would love to do. i feel there are a couple countries in which i could live for many years and yet, before i can determine that properly, there is so much world to explore. and i may as well flexpat while i am still pretty healthy. thank you for your channel. it's the content i didn't know i needed! 💗 i also love your approach to immerse versus "superficial" travel.
Exactly ghilly_one, I totally agree with you.❤
Thanks and hope you get to live this lifestyle. So glad you are enjoying our channel.

I've heard that people get travel burnout if you constantly bounce from one country to another. People need a place to have a daily routine.
After 6 months abroad, it's often good to go home for a break.
Great point. We head back twice per year for long breaks with family.
Safe travels,

Love this video. Learn a new word today, ‘Flexpat’. We will called ourselves ‘Grey nomad flexpats’ from now on. 😂 My wife and I are doing something similar but on a smaller scale. As Aussies, we love being at home in Melbourne in Autumn but the rest of the time, we travel. I like the idea that we live like a ‘resident’ in a country. Much cheaper rent wise, slower pace and increased enjoyment. I like your thinking. I noticed that we were spending less while travelling overseas than in Melbourne. Amazing way to save money!
Thanks and glad you like our made up words. 🤣 Safe travels and many blessings.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Flexpat. I like that. That's what I plan to do when I retire. Six months in a foreign country, six months at home, six months in a different foreign country, six more months at home...lather, rinse, repeat.
Good luck with your flex patting. We love it.

Please keep making videos, that’s were you both have a niche. You both seam like very sensible and conservative, so I trust everything you say. When most people will think it’s crazy idea, I can have them watch your videos.
Thanks for the kind words. It is people like you that keep us going making videos.

Thanks. We have visited so many places that it would be so difficult to pick just one.

We love your channel. If possible can you do a video on how to prevent getting sick from the local food and water, as this is one of my worries. We admire your courage and your organizational skills and love learning from you both x
Thanks so much for following along. Thanks for the suggestion and we plan on doing something similar to that in the future.

Awesome, thank you! Hope you enjoy our channel.

After that, we plan on slowing down and travel more like this at our favorite places. Agree it is more cost effective, but we are trying to build our business and website right now with content.

Great job!
