Thanks for pointing out the reddit thread on this tactics in the description to change dates and then cancel. That's unbelievable. In my opinion, this is an Airbnb flaw and people are exploiting it unmercifully. Gladly, it was only 1 night for me.
If a guest requests for a change of date after cancellation period, it should be clearly explained to the host how this change of dates effects the cancellation policy. In my opinion, hosts should have the option, that if a guest asks for a change of dates after cancellation period, to accept the change of dates only with no cancellation possible any more. Easy as that.

The thing I hate with AirBnB was you only have 48 hours if you made the right reservation on some cancellation policy. Especially if you're spoiled with AirBnB and your bookings always just works outs. Then with just one hiccup, you just want to change your mind or your flight details was changed. You can't cancel your AirBnB reservation without paying a hefty amount. Seriously, 50% for cancellation? If you paid like 1500$ for accommodation then you only get 750 at most without a much of a do. I understand if it's only a few days before checking in then they cancelled then they deserve the 50% cancellation fee but a couple of months away before check in and just for past 48hrs and you're already obliged to for a 50% cancellation fee? People think money grows on tree.
I get where the hosts are coming for those days that the reservation slots are filled are needed to open again or something but seriously, there's more customers who just want to book without reading every policy to the dot, customers who got legitimate reasons not covered by this "AirBnB's extenuating circumstances" and they also deserve some break on this capitalist world they just want better options.
