Nice video. I watched a few videos befor i attempted this on a 2000 regal. Working in the gravel driveway i dreaded dropping the frame and unhooking the steering. I decided to try and unbolt both tierods and fold them out of the way. This let me rotate the swaybar up and slide it out with no problem at all. I unbolted the bushings on the passenger side first and it seemed to help get that 15 millimeter bolt out on the drivers side bushing a little easier.
Thanks for the informative video - have to replace mine this weekend. if we don't have the advantage of a vehicle lift, how would you recommend tackling this to get enough room under the vehicle to drop the back of the engine down? I was thinking jack stands just behind the engine block, supporting the vehicle, and then using a floor jack to lower the block down? thanks for the help!
Chilton Library says, if you drop the engine subfloor and don't remove the pinch bolt (and later re-attach and engage it PROPERLY) you can make the car an accident-waiting-to-happen... the steering could cease to work. Also if you get a real OEM sway bar you can just slide it in without messing with the engine subfloor at all. Only aftermarket ones require this (at least on a 2003 buick)
I know this may be a dumb question but is there a right and left to the sway bar or up and down I think I put mine upside down it's hitting the steering rods from the rack?
So I watched a video where a guy replaced this doing the same process as you, however he took out a pinch bolt that holds the intermediate shaft to the rack but you didnt. So is taking it out not necessary? If not isnt there still a bunch of pressure on it wben dropping the subframe or not?
Like another commenter said, you can unbolt the outer tie rod ends (I only hand to unbolt 1) and pull the sway bar out from the side instead of unbolting the subframe.
Excellent video I have a 1999 Chevy Malibu will this application work for my vehicle and if so do I need to do a front end alignment when I get done replacing front sway bar? Text me back and let me know thank you

why do those clamshell brackets for the sway bar bend like that... both of mine are bent.. every one else I look at these W bodies... its bent... are people just waiting too long before changing sway bar bushings?
+Rick Dangerous Yeah, I think it's just a matter of wear and tear. Over time there's just so much wear on that part that the metal can't hold its original form. Great question! Did mine yesterday and removed the pinch bolt.
Easiest part of the job and piece of mind.
The intermediate steering shaft actually does slide down about 3-4 inches, but it is definitely safer to remove the pinch bolt.
You guys have a video on a Chevy Monte Carlo getting its Rod replaced
there is no mention of the steering. do you not need to remove the steering pin when dropping the front frame?
What extra steps would you have to take to replace the sway bar on a 2012 chev malibu
Is this the same procedure on a 2002 Century? Can this be done without a lift?
