The best concert I ever had the pleasure to attend was in the early '80s when Jessie, Waylon, and Willie came to Calgary! Jessie opened and led into Waylon's set. After a brief intermission, Willie came on and played for over two hours! Because of a limit on the number of tickets bought by one person (there were 7 of us and the limit was 6) I got the single seat for Willie's set, floor, 2nd row, dead center! ! ! I will never forget!

I've been gigging pro and semi-pro for over 45 years, worked with some great musos and some okay ones; I'm probably what's known as a 'front-man'. When I'm out-front, trying my heart out to entertain an audience, I like to interpret a song as simply as I can so that the melody and the message get across. With due-respect to all of the musos I ever worked with, I prefer if they don't get in the way of the simple basics of a song, and that means don't play all over me when I'm singing. Want a solo? Take it and fly with it, but don't 'solo' over my shit. When I'm comping for a front-man I stay out of the way, only providing what's necessary, perhaps gently scrubbing (strumming) chords, occasional fills - all to allow the artist to shine. Man, my grandmother had house-parties when folk would take their turn at singing - no backing instruments - and their talent would hush a living-room. I'd hate to get in the way of that. I honestly feel Willie wants no more than the absolute basics on that stage, just to express the song with simplicity. He deserves it, and he undertakes it with experience and authority. The great musicians on that stage instinctively know that and respect it, too
If you knew how to play guitar you would realize what an unbelieveable player Willie is. 7ths 9ths he knows all the chords. He played guitar for Ray Price before his solo career and you don't play in Ray's band unless you are excellent. Willie's guitar playing on this song is as far from simple as you can get. He is AWESOME!!! Nuthin against the GREAT George Jones or even Elvis but I guess like you they just strum. Willie and Waylon are in total genius category playing. Willie can play anything. Waylon chicken picking back and forth with Moon. Waylon was no moron. He picked up a lot from Charles Hardin Holley.

I've been gigging pro and semi-pro for over 45 years, worked with some great musos and some okay ones; I'm probably what's known as a 'front-man'. When I'm out-front, trying my heart out to entertain an audience, I like to interpret a song as simply as I can so that the melody and the message get across. With due-respect to all of the musos I ever worked with, I prefer if they don't get in the way of the simple basics of a song, and that means don't play all over me when I'm singing. Want a solo? Take it and fly with it, but don't 'solo' over my shit. When I'm comping for a front-man I stay out of the way, only providing what's necessary, perhaps gently scrubbing (strumming) chords, occasional fills - all to allow the artist to shine. Man, my grandmother had house-parties when folk would take their turn at singing - no backing instruments - and their talent would hush a living-room. I'd hate to get in the way of that.
I honestly feel Willie wants no more than the absolute basics on that stage, just to express the song with simplicity. He deserves it, and he undertakes it with experience and authority. The great musicians on that stage instinctively know that and respect it, too
If you knew how to play guitar you would realize what an unbelieveable player
Willie is. 7ths 9ths he knows all the chords. He played guitar for Ray Price before his solo career and you don't play in Ray's band unless you are excellent. Willie's guitar playing on this song is as far from simple as you can get. He is AWESOME!!! Nuthin against the GREAT George Jones or even Elvis but I guess like you they just strum. Willie and Waylon are in total genius category playing. Willie can play anything. Waylon chicken picking back and forth with Moon. Waylon was no moron. He picked up a lot from Charles Hardin Holley.
