- Hello Luxe Minds community! As someone who's always looking to save money, I came across Misfits Market! It advertises that you'll save up to 40% on groceries with them so I decided to put them to the test by ordering their largest box and seeing how much the food would've cost me at the store. Needless to say - I was SHOCKED at the outcome.
Update - the company did credit me back $10 for my box due to the lack of food. I would also like to note that they have changed their structure a bit since my video and now you can select some of the food that will be added to your box. All in all, give it a try and see how it works in your area! Varies greatly by location :) Great cause and organic produce! Not everything in my shopping cart was organic (due to trouble finding some of the seasonal produce) but the price difference was minor when compared to non-organic. I think Misfits marketing needs to update their marketing around how much money you actually save until the quantity of food provided in all boxes is consistent. Thanks for watching!

I wish that the store's would just have an area just for imperfect foods at a discount. Make more sense than to just go through process of ordering plus the materials to ship it in
they do? well here there's always the 1$ bags of soon to throw away produce. After that, most farmers send them to soup and frozen food manufactures and than animal feed.
They do, it's behind the stores in large metal containers (some people call them dumpsters), that's where old and insect damaged (imperfect) produce is kept. This company is genius, they found a way of selling old and damaged produce to people.
Great idea. But all we have is Super Walmart. What we need is a Farmers Market here in little Branson Mo. The Town everyone jokes about on Ozarks and Breaking Bad. Its not too bad here. The entertainment if you want to call it that is vile though.
In the Pacific Nothwest .. They have Wenco & Food 4 Less which are full grocery stores but lower quality produce then let’s say Kroger’s , Safeway or For Sure Albertsons! 🤔 they also, fill shelves w/ a lot of their store brands which are cheaper then the selection of may 2to 3 brand items they put on the shelf next to their own brand!

I really feel based on watching 5 other people reviewing it that you may have gotten the incorrect order. Every other large box has so much more than that.
I agree! I've been getting the Madness box, which is the one she signed up for, and I get twice as much as it looks like she received in this order. It does appear that they possibly sent her the wrong amount.

Even if she did get the wrong order no one ever fixed it! Seems like a scam to me that they won’t tell you the prices until you give your card numbers in the first place and I’m glad definitely I watched this video.

I received my first Misfits box this week, and the packaging is entirely recyclable (all paper or cardboard). I'm very happy with the first batch but may switch to CSA with a local farm over the summer.

UPDATE: Misfits Market did give me back a $10 credit after I sent them a photo of the food and weight in the box. I did select the bigger box and they stood by the fact that they sent me the bigger box. But other reviews seemed to have received a lot more food so def worth giving it a try!

I would say it's worth giving it a shot! Boxes and prices of food vary depending on your location so get a box and decide if it's worth it for you :) Not all my items were organic so there would've been a slight difference in the price but it still wouldn't make the numbers that Misfits is marketing on grocery prices be accurate based on my location (NYC). All in all, I think it's a great cause and I will be giving them another try one day. I just think they need to tweak their marketing while they work on the consistency of the quantity of food in their boxes. Give it a try and let us know how it turns out in your area! Plus not being able to get two or more of an item (seriously, one zucchini doesn’t make a whole side dish). Plus shipping costs. I want to support what they do, but it might be time to reconsider. You are so welcome but please keep in mind not every single item I got was organic but I did try and find organic prices online for my calculations. Either way I prefer shopping locally where I can decide what I need and the quantity. Feel like it's still food waste if you get a box with a bunch of vegetables you don't eat or know what to cook with. But you can always get creative I guess just depends on what you prefer. I really do think it's cool that you broke this down and gave us an honest review of this brand! It's got such a cool concept and I'm really glad that someone thought of doing this but it's reviews like this that really do save people like me lots of money cuz I would have jumped right on it but after you broke it down for us I guess it really isn't the greatest deal in the world now is it? Great video and I appreciate the effort you went to in providing your research. The main thing for me is it has become almost impossible to find organic, non GMO foods and I didn't see where this was taken into consideration on the cost, as these foods are always way more expensive. I was surprised when you opened your box. I just got my first box (the small box for 1-2 people) and I think I got just as much as you did. I'm expecting this to last me over a week, with some of the fruit lasting longer. I'm still in the process of deciding whether I want to keep going with it, but there's a couple of things I really like about it so far:
1. Larger variety than I would normally get if I shopped from the store: I live alone, so I'm only trying to feed myself. Shopping at the grocery store, I tend to have a problem with fruit especially where you kinda have to buy in bulk because buying singles is a lot more expensive. It's too much for only one person, so I'd basically be forcing myself to eat the same thing everyday to finish it before it went bad, and I couldn't buy much else because I already had 5 lbs of oranges to finish. I like how in the box you get just two or three of everything, so I can mix it up and not just eat oranges every single day.
2. Forces me to eat more produce and more variety of produce: I get kinda overwhelmed going to the grocery store and trying to figure what I want and what everything is. I tend to plan out my grocery store trips beforehand, but then I end up just getting the same boring stuff every time, because that's what I know they will have. With the misfits market box, you get to choose a lot of different items each week, and they often change. I can look at what they have and plan what I want, and lookup anything I'm curious about (they also give you a little info blurb next to everything). I also just am too lazy to go to the grocery store every week, which causes me to end up without vegetables most of the time. I think having a weekly or biweekly subscription will be good, since I'll get my veggies no matter what then.

Just wondering did you actually purchase organic produce that was actually labeled organic or are you just comparing unorganic produce to misfits organic because your going to get less for the buck if its organic produce like misfits

Thanks for doing this! I saw a misfits ad and was totally gonna order until I watched this video. I live in rural Kentucky (about 20 miles from Lexington and 50 miles from Louisville) so local produce can be found much, much cheaper here.

I like your video. However, did you buy all organic items from the store? because I think misfits advertise that they provide organic vegetables, and I know that organic vegetables at the store can be expensive.
So quick question-- did you get all organic from the store? Because I noticed some of the signs you took a photo of didn’t say organic (ie jalapeño peppers, mango, and apples) and also did you weigh your food from there grocery store too by chance? That can also make a difference. In addition I wonder if you ordered the wrong box or they sent you the wrong one because that seems to fit the smaller version description a lot better- especially since it didn’t look like you got all 14 different varieties ? and also a good 8-12 pounds difference. Just curious if you considered any of those factors ? Thinking about trying!
Def try it out! I ordered the big box for sure - I didn't mess that up and when I asked the company they said it was the big box. But like I said in my pinned comment - the prices in the photos were not all organic but the organic prices were only a few cents different in MY location. These things will vary so much depending on where you live. I'll have to redo this video at some point to get the right box and all organics. Thanks for watching!
I would reach out to costumer service!! I get the madness and I get wayyy more food. Looks like they did send the smaller one. Mine have always been an awesome value. Cheaper produce than even the international grocery stores.
I did reach out to them the day after I got it and they credited my back $10. Maybe I'll try it again in the future but I'll stick to grocery stores for now :)

I was wondering the same thing. I cant see where any of the items from the grocery store are organic. If they arent its definitely not a fair comparison.
Did you buy certified organic in your local comparison shopping? Because that's what they say they're sending you.
I was sooo close to subscribing to Misfits Market! I am extremely grateful for your video because I would have been very disappointed if I received that box. I believe in their mission, but I don’t appreciate the disparity in the amount of food they promise and the dishonesty about their cost versus the grocery store. You saved the day! Thank you!
Hi Stormie! Thank you for watching but I do want to add that my box could've been a one-off case where they messed up as some others have had a good experience! I would say it's worth trying at least once. There are other brands you can look into that are doing the same thing - like Imperfect Foods!

Did you compare to organic store prices?
It really seems like you paid for the big box and got the small starter box (your screen shot showed 10-13 pounds for the small).

I don't like it when companies advertise a good product but are deceptive. You didn't make a big deal of it, but if I'm expecting 18 - 22 pounds of food and only receive 11 pounds; I would be pissed off! You actually saved me money! ThanQ for this well informed video!

I remember getting a box from 'Ugly Produce'. It might be the same company before they renamed into Misfits? but it wasn't a noticeably better value if you consider you don't have to control over picking which one you want to keep.

That box is great for me as a single person but for a family? I don’t think so. Are you able to order more than produce? Like protein and snacks?
I got a similarly valued box two weeks ago. I have no idea what happened but NORMALLY they’re really great. The week before that I got TWELVE colored bell peppers among a mass of amount of other GREAT things like 4 delicate squash, 2 large bunches of kale, and the list goes on...not sure why the inconsistency.
Oh wow! That sounds like a great box. They do need to work on their consistency. Hopefully as they grow and scale they can get this under control so their marketing is more accurate.

Lol the size of the box and the actual quantity you get is so different. I don't think this can serve 5 people. It's like digging up a mountain only to find a rat. Although it's a good initiative because Atleast it's not being wasted in the shop. The price difference is huge. Maybe they have charged alot for the packaging and advertising. But I agree that shopping at the grocery store is way more better. 🌼
Did you buy organic at the store when you compared?
Hi! Unfortunately I was not able to find the organic option for some of the items in my box. For the ones I couldn't find at all I looked up organic prices online instead. But next time I do this, I'll compare it to Whole Foods or look around to find all the exact organic items. This is one of the benefits of Misfits, knowing everything is organic. Thanks for watching!

I was able to manage my first box and I noticed some items were cilantro not very expensive, as acorn squash and water melon radishes. Also, the apples I received were 3 times the size I had from Walmart the same week. Also, some of the type Lettuces were much more expensive and looked great in my box. After I priced mine with Walmart I am head with the Promo Code. Not sure how the next box will turn out but I do plan to weigh it. Thanks for the tips and excellent review.

You definitely received a "light box!" Did you complain that you didn't get the correct weight and did they credit you? In my experience, anytime I let them know about an issue they have credited me for the error.

I'm gonna try them next. I've tried hungry harvest and Washington Green Grocer.. I'm the only vegetarian in my household so the boxes last a while for me and I use those produce bags.

It’s been a year. I haven’t seen these boxes. However regarding the cost. Since you did get the wrong box and it was the mischief box. It was cheaper for misfits and you didn’t have to waste gas which is a PLUS now in 2022

I just tried Misfits and I had a similar experience. I had the opportunity to choose some specific items I wanted, which I liked. However, one of the items, rainbow chard, was missing from the box I received and nothing else was substituted.
Also, with all 3 of the squash varieties I selected, I received one miniature piece. They were definitely not large enough to serve a family. If only tiny veggies were available, I would expect them to include more than one piece.
The add-on mushrooms were the best part of the box. They were fresh and the prices were lower than my local stores.

Looking at the produce at the store you shopped it’s way lower than the Kroger near me, I live in a kind of food desert
I get the smaller box and this is legit almost identical to my last box so it seems like they ran out or something went wrong!

My mom used to do this. I loved all the different shapes it was really cool but I don't remember why my mom stopped... I think its because we're a family of 8 and we had to go to the store and get more so it wasn't working for us.
She probably realized she was a victim of false advertising and could save money shopping herself.
The weight of your box falls under the lesser priced misfits box out of curiosity are you sure that you selected the correct box when ordering i just saw another video and that person had a ton of food so im just confused
I have a few friends that are trying to talk me in to subscribing to this service. I wont do it. For one, I am blessed to live in PA near all the Amish Farms where (in my opinion) nothing tops their produce! second, when you have children who are super picky, some of this produce I worry will just go to waste immediately when not knowing what to cook with it, etc. I would much rather shop and support the Amish produce stands or my local grocery stores that thrive on better produce. My wife and I do a 400 share CSA, where you can buy anything from 1/4 shares to “The farmers Share” (double). It hovers around 1000 members. For $150, you get a box that size, only full, and a smaller box with 14 meat selections.
We won’t deliver anymore though. That hasn’t hurt us a bit. They all coordinate amongst themselves and get it picked up. One sweet old gal bought a minivan just so she could fit all her friends goodies back to Evanston IL.
We always have upsells. Frozen pizzas, cheese. We just don’t do citrus or full out dairy.

@@moneymindss I don't care for any of the "box delivery" services. You're still bathing your food in diesel fuel having it moved half way across the country. I'd like to say just find a good farmers market, or better yet, a farmer. But people who offer that are bailing out because of the minimum wage creeping up. I don't pay anyone that low, but I do only pay a manual laborer $10.50/hr. With all the over time, it's a $40k/yr job in an area where a nice older modest home is $80k. Everyone gets to pic 30 paid days off during Jan and Feb. They like their jobs! But I can't make it pencil out at $15/hr. I could hire more workers and eliminate the overtime, but $15/hr $30k isn't a "living wage" either. As usual, the do gooder government destroys!
So I guess these box services will be all that's left, and I guess the real ma and pa operations that don't hire any help will hold on. Keep doing these reviews, so people can have choices and now where to go.
I really think that she might’ve got the wrong box because I have watched about seven other reviews of the same box and they are all full and really nicely packaged

I live 20 miles from the store, this represents a savings if I get the box. I need to see if it is available in my area.
What kind of vehicle do you have, a helicopter? In this review, minus her discount, you are saying you would spend about $13 to go 20 miles to your local store.
@@Crumpman 20 miles one way to the nearest store. But I live really rural, so the costs at that store are higher then normal. Also, I don't have a car. I'd be asking my brother, who lives about an hour and a half away to come take me to town. I can do that once a month unless it's a medical thing. If it weren't for misfits market, I wouldn't have any fresh vegetables for 3 weeks out of the month in winter.
Ultimately it costs about $15-$20 for my brothers gas, plus the inflated cost of the vegetables I buy.
So yeah, misfits market is a discount for me.

@@Crumpman yeah man, it really helps. I grow enough food for my family for about half the year, but I live on 1.5 acres and it's completely maxed out. So it really helps.

That would have been like 17.50 at my local SavALot here in Cleveland.
Subtracting out things I would end up throwing away due to my strict dietary needs, more like $11.32 at my Save-A-Lot here in Florida and I would still have to go to buy what I need because this big half empty box isn't nearly enough for one person. As a diabetic I have to eat fresh produce as 2/3 of what I eat. This company certainly wouldn't save either of us any money. I can't eat much with sugar in it so I would end up throwing away one or two pieces of fruit. I can't eat spicy food so the jalapenos would be tossed. I grow my own herbs so they needn't send me any. But I agree with your price assessment assuming you eat everything. So instead of saving 40% on groceries by buying this, you would save about 60% on groceries over this if you continue shopping at Save-A-Lot.
@@nunyabiznez6381 even cheaper than save a lot if you buy local at a farmers market or roadside stand. We have lots of those in Kentucky and a family that owns a butcher shop as well as grows their own produce are always having insanely cheap deals on bulk produce. I think most of these mail order food boxes are a rip off anyway. I tried Hello Fresh and was shocked at how much packaging they send for three tiny meals. Such waste and the meals were rather bland and simple enough that I could have made them myself for much cheaper. I think these food boxes are for people who don’t know how to shop for themselves, people who aren’t concerned about overpaying, and/or people that feel they don’t have time to shop.

Thanks for this great video idea - commenting as a long time home cook, picky produce shopper, vegetable lover and former sous chef may I say (i) if the idea of Misfits Market is to sell misshapen produce at a reduced rate why did your shipment look normal from where I'm sitting? (ii) the big box was only partly filled - I was disappointed to see how all the produce was thrown together without cushioning/paper (iii) years ago I researched "organic" foods for newspaper articles and learned that when non-organic fields are sprayed with pesticides, chemicals can drift by air currents to "organic" fields so buying only organic doesn't make sense to me (iv) 4 apples and 1 mango are not enough fruit for a week for even one person at my house but if that's all I had I would prep it and make a fruit salad, adding some fruit juice so each family member can have some but this shipment isn't meant to suffice for a big family for a week so more shopping to supplement what you received would be in order.

It is strange which stores you shop? I Just bought two three peppers zucchini spinach kale basic meat needs for 5meals plant based sausage mushroom cheese bread two make two family pizza and box of sushi for two I paid 90$ 😵💫😟

I think everything in the boxes organic. It seems that some of the stuff you purchased at the store is not organic. Unfortunately organic produce and vegetables is usually more than the ones that are not organic. That could be the difference in the cost of your box as well.

It doesn’t look like this review was as well thought out- I think this was accidentally the small box ( whether is the companies fault or the purchasers error Idk) and also it doesn’t seem like all the food that was Purchased in this review was organic as well , nor was it weighed out in comparison to the box purchases. Just some things to consider before you write off the idea! I haven’t tried it yet, but I’ll do a review of my own soon if you’re interested just follow ! I don’t post really so it will probably be the only video that shows up hahah

Rarely ever find some body make it crystal clear, easy to decide or not. U just awesome make it sweet, useful , and short. The end shopping at grocery store is better, and cost less.
So here in Mississippi organic produce is insane. I decided to try Misfits because my access to organic produce is so limited. I was looking at those TJ prices in this video totally thinking...yeah that's cheaper than here and alot of those aren't available here anyway organic. Maybe for others in this situation, the subscription would be worth it because access is an issue.

We shop for produce at a local Asian market and Aldi. It's so cheap there and great quality

So the price of your vegetables is not always determined by where you live because the grocery stores in North Carolina are very expensive. So I would definitely spend probably around the same thing if I was to get all of those vegetables. And are vegetables mostly in most places are by the pound not bite each.
In the end, I think it depends on the store and what you buy. Trader Joe's is best place I've found that sells quality food for cheap. Misfit Market can be beneficial if you consider that they deliver stuff to you and they also sell packaged foods.
