How to do foundation Paper Piecing with Freezer paper. Such a FUN technique!

- Last week I shared a quick tip about printing on freeze paper. This week I'm using those patterns to do foundation paper piecing with freezer paper. Maybe we should call that freezer paper piecing.
I loove this technique. Once you've got the hang of folding and using the iron to stick your fabrics to the (right side of) the paper it works like a charm. And the best thing, you can reuse the paper to make the same block twice or as many times as you like. (I feel an experiment coming up on how many times it actually will stick to fabric.)

Great tutorial, thankyou. Anyone in Australia watching this and can not afford the Reynolds. Ive come across a Mont Marte brand art pad (A4) called Bleed Proof Layout paper. Ive never used Reynolds but this Mont Marte brand works just fine, fabric irons on well and peels off easily.

I just took a course for paper piecing on a quilt. We sewed through the paper but I see this is a lot cleaner especially when I had redo the seam a few times bc of wrongly placing my fabric. Nice job on that, thank you!

Yeah! I really like this method as I don't like sewing through paper and then pulling on my neat and tight stitches. I tried it without freezer paper and had to use a touch of washable glue to keep the first piece of fabric secure. Sewing along the fold was really quite easy. Thank You!

And now, with your QAL, I not only understand it but I have done it! I'm in the middle of making my Row 9 triangles, and I find it a little fiddly, but am enjoying it too...I'm slow compared to some! But I actually prefer the freezer paper method and folding back the paper to sew, rather than stitching through teabag paper. Great learning with you....I've actually begun to love paper piecing!

Another fun video! I've never done paper piecing with freezer paper before, but I can see the advantages of doing it that way. It eliminates tearing all those little pieces of paper off. Sometimes they can be hard to get off. And it saves wear and tear on the stitches. Thanks for a great explanation.

Love the top about cutting the paper a little smaller to avoid going through it with the rotary cutter. Very sensible.

Question, when sewing the seam could you use an edge joining (stitch in the ditch) foot so that it would butt up against the folded back freezer paper.
Great video and I now understand this technique. Love the methods of using a paper copy for template cutting (I waste more fabric trying to get the right size especially odd angles) and the trimming the pattern smaller so when trimming down block you don’t cut into the template.

I really like the freezer paper method. I have done up to 20 squares with one paper. Although the last few were a little tricky :)

Perfect method for my brain
Now to learn how to make my own paper pricing and make sure I have my numbers in order. As in something simple like a old appliqué pattern from one of my moms old books.
The one thing I’m still confused about is when I’m cutting my templates do I cut on the front or the back of the fabric? I really couldn’t tell when you were cutting them.

I really like your method may have to try it. That pattern came from your book right? Just wondering why you chose to make the background piece 2 instead of just the one, seems like an unnecessary step. Any way do you have an extra rotary cutter, I use my old blades for cutting paper so I have PAPER right on the cutter and to distinguish it even more I store it in a pink holder "P" paper!! Can't wait to see the finished placemats they will be awesomely colorful.
Yeah! Happy you liked it :D Yes the pattern is from my book. Do you mean that there are two pieces of background on both sides? I'm not sure if that could be done differently, because there is a edge on the top of the flower pot. Any suggestions on how you'd make it one piece? :) Yes I do have an extra rotary cutter, I use a different colored one for paper. So handy to 'use up' old blades indeed.
No suggestion I don't do a lot of paper piecing that is your love! I am also a long arm quilter so I really don't like quilting over all those seams, I had one of my quilts that had quite a few seams once and it took so long to quilt because I didn't want my seams to flip.

I almost want to pronounce I•Ron, also. Here, in the Southern United States, (where our English is corrupted, haha), we pronounce it with a very soft "r", but it is definitely still there. It's almost like you're saying "iron", but the "o" is silent..."irn", with a long "i".
Does that make any sense?

I like this method rather than sewing on the paper and tearing it off later, which takes time and is a messy process.

Hoi Joanne, ja je zou de vierkantjes uit 1 rij wel aan elkaar kunnen naaien met deze methode, maar volgens mij niet de hele kikker in een keer. Of ik moet iets over het hoofd zien :) Ben benieuwd hoe je m gaat maken!
