  • Everybody knows Austria; it's one of Europe's most famous countries. That being said, when hearing about Austria, two things come to mind: Vienna and the Alps. But this country hides a lot more than that. Today we continue our journey through the Austrian states, and we'll take a look at Carinthia.

More information about the video content bellow:
    1. Carinthia is the southernmost Austrian state or Land.
    2. About 300 BC, several Illyrian and Celtic tribes joined together in the Kingdom of Noricum, centered on the capital Noreia, possibly located in the Zollfeld basin near the later Roman city of Virunum.
    3. Klagenfurt am Wörthersee is the capital of the federal state of Carinthia in Austria.
    4. In late 1918, the breakup of Habsburg monarchy was imminent, and on 21 October 1918 the members of the Reichsrat for the German-speaking territories of Austria met in Vienna to constitute a "Provisional National Council for German-Austria". Prior to the meeting the delegates agreed that German-Austria should not include "Yugoslav areas of settlement". After the end of the World War I, however, Carinthia became a contested region.
    5. Major sights include the cities of Klagenfurt and Villach and medieval towns like Friesach or Gmünd. Carinthia features numerous monasteries and churches, as well as castles and palaces like large-scale Hochosterwitz, Griffen, or Porcia. In 2012 it achieved 12.6 million overnight stays.
    6. Scenic highlights are the main bathing lakes Wörthersee, Millstätter See, Ossiacher See and Faaker See as well as a variety of smaller lakes and ponds. In winter Carinthia offers ski resorts such as the Nassfeld near Hermagor, Gerlitzen mountain, Bad Kleinkirchheim, Flattach, and Heiligenblut at Austria's highest mountain, the Grossglockner as well as the Hohe Tauern and Nock Mountains national parks for all kind of alpine sports and mountaineering.
    7. According to the Constitution of Austria, the Landtage are the unicameral legislatures of the nine states of Austria (Bundesländer), dealing with all matters not explicitly allotted to federal level. The modern Landtage are the democratic successors of the estates assemblies in the corresponding crown lands of the Austrian Empire.

I'm a born and bred Londoner but my family on my mums side are Carinthian-Slovenes. There are still many villages that have preserved their Slav heritage and name. Klagenfurt for example is known as Celovec

Sebastian, thank you for the data on Carithia, especially since I intend to go and live there (in one of the places of which you showed pictures but never named), much appreciated. But here is the question: Why.. WHY??!!... like so many other UA-camrs do you have some horrendous noise, supposedly music, not-so-much-in the background?? Not only is it irritating in its own right but makes what you're saying difficult to hear. Why, Sebastian? It isn't artistic, it doesn't enhance a documentary, it is just irritating and distracting. Anyone who can't get the balance of background music -- assuming you need any at all -- and the ease of hearing what you are saying, correct, just comes across as amateur. I assume that isn't what you intend.
