Sounds great - but why does it work?
Thanks Stuart. That's a big question - a short answer would be, as with any outside idea, as long as you start and end strongly inside the tonality, you can get away with all sorts of strangeness! Being more analytical, it gradually moves outside, using arpeggios moving around the circle of 4ths, with the strong harmonic pull of the idea hopefully taking your ear with it. The first three arpeggios (A, D, G) are all in the A7 key and the C arp pretty much works as well. It's only the tritone move between the F and B arps where it gets properly outside, although the B7 implies lydian b7 which is commonly used over 7th chords in jazz. Ultimately it resolves strongly back to the root note A at the end, which is essential...
