  • This Volkswagen Passat was cutting out on the customer so he contacted us to find out why. The problem was solved with a fault code interrogation, visual inspection and graphing the signal from the engine speed sensor...think I just gave the game away.

Hi. I have a 2011 passat b7 2.0 tdi yesterday while driving it died and did not fire up after that. It would crank but the engine would not fire up. After waiting for about 15 mins it fired up and died after 10 to 15 seconds. And again would crank and not fire up. I'm from India and getting hold of a vcds in a remote town here is next to impossible. Where can I start off with? Pls help. It's really urgent. I'm stuck in a remote place in India with no help

Hi sorry to hear you're having problems. From.yoir description it sounds more like a fuel supply problem. Without test tools you'd be a bit stuck but try lifting up the back seat and hammering on the fuel pump access cover. It may be a binding fuel pump in the tank. Can you hear a whining noise as the pump primes with key in run position?

@@mobileautomotiveservices5461 thank you for a quick reply. I tried losing up the injectors fuel supply seems fine there. Couldn't check the pressure cuz no tools. No priming sound when key turned on since the time I got the car. Could it be one of the relays? Or crankshaft sensor? I'm trying to go to the nearest town and get hold of a vcds

@@mobileautomotiveservices5461 here's a little update. The garage guy called me today saying the car is running fine since couple of hours. He said he got the injectors cleaned, sprayed contact cleaner on all the sensors and went for a drive for about an hour the car ran fine. I went to the garage to take the delivery drove for about 5 kms before keeping the car idling for about an hour it seemed normal. After leaving from the garage 5 mins down the road the car went dead and refused to start again like before. Started after a while but limp mode. Died few times till I drove it back to the garage. Mechanic says battery is low so the fuel pump is not priming exact pressure. Sent the battery for charging. I'm thinking its probably fuel pump. But that's an expensive affair here and sourcing it is difficult. Could that be it. Anyway to check it out?

@@ididnotgetabetteridif it is a PD engine, there is no fuel pressure sensor so hard to get live data serially via scantool. If it is common rail diesel, cranking and runnk g pressures can be checked using generic scantool. If car is in limo mode you should get it scanned for codes to narrow down your problem.

@@mobileautomotiveservices5461 it is a CR engine. The limp mode lasted for few mins before we could connect it to a scanner it died completely refusing to start at all. We checked the fuel filter box for fuel supply and there was none. I'm suspecting it is the fuel pump under the rear seat now. Does this car have the famous relay issue? Fuel cutoff relay I believe?
